Host Debbie Piesen says:
Our land is a short bike ride to the small town of Louisa, but it feels like another world. We bought the land 7 years ago, right after it had been clearcut. The local foresters told us the only way to manage land in central Virginia is to spray with herbicide and plant loblolly pines, but we disagree. We are letting the land heal on its own, and recover it has! Our land is mostly wild, as the forest has quickly re-established itself. We have dirt roads through much of the property, and several foot paths to and from the three creeks crisscrossing the land. Also to explore are four organically managed fields spread throughout the property- we grow vegetable seeds for income, and require fields to be spread apart for genetic isolation. We have organic orchards as well, complete with a small flock of ducks. Our house and orchard are on top of a hill, very open with excellent sunsets and stargazing. It is very quiet here. Our lives follow the rhythms of the sun, so we have no machines running at night. It's easy to forget about the rest of the world until you feel the faint rumble of the freight train chugging through town one mile away.
