A horsebox hideaway on a super cool site with its own skatepark

The purple horsebox at Camp Hillcrest in the Wye Valley gives you a place to stay on a campsite that’s tailor-made for teens. It offers skateboarding lessons, graffiti workshops, and has nets for scrambling in among the trees. It’s situated in the Wye Valley on the edge of the Forest of Dean so there’s also mountain biking, kayaking, and other adventurous activities nearby. But it’s not only teenagers who will like it here. Younger kids will love it too and the location, within walking distance of Offa’s Dyke Path and the river, will appeal to others as well. Just don’t come expecting total peace and quiet – there’s far too much fun for that.

Having said that, with the kids well occupied, parents might find time to put their feet up and come evening, everyone’s tuckered out so a hush descends. That’s the moment to light the campfire and relax or, if you’ve booked it, jump in the hot tub (available at an extra cost). The horsebox itself is comfy but pretty rustic. Inside, there are two double beds; one stacked atop the other, bunk-bed style. There’s a little kitchenette, a log burner, and seating, with the bathroom just outside. It’s a curvy tin and timber construction with a compost loo and hot water shower. Outside, a raised deck gives you a place to sit in an otherwise shared space.

Camp Hillcrest is used as an educational activity centre during the week and there’s bunkhouse accommodation here too. It can be sociable and lively – but it’s always laid back. As well as the skatepark, Camp Hillcrest is also a smallholding with a veg patch, pigs, and chickens. As the name suggests you’re in a lofty location and the valley views are good from here. It’s only about a mile through woods down to the river – but it’s a steep one. For an alternative walk, Offa’s Dyke Path is even closer than that. There are plenty of other adventurous activities in the area and your hosts are just the people to help you organise whatever you want to do.

Take advantage of the Offas dyke footpath that runs nearby property. We can help with booking canoe trips on the Wye, rock climbing and mountain biking. On site can book skateboard lessons and graffit workshops. Or simple chill and soak up the countryside in this area of natural beauty. Other guests maybe onsite in our other accommodations. Hot tub availableat additional cost.

Camp Hillcrest Horsebox
The setting is pretty and our 2 year old loved running around and playing on the playground equipment and the trampoline. The horsebox is quite old now and was really not very clean. The bathroom area attached to the back of the horsebox is just an enclosed long drop loo and a shower tray, also not very clean. It's a cool spot and the skate park, playground, tree nets and fire pit are all nice features but just to be honest that it's a bit worn down these days.

Fun family week at Camp Hillcrest
We had a fab week at Camp Hillcrest with our young kids. They loved the animals - goats, pigs, chickens, very friendly dogs - and the skate park was a big hit! They had skate lessons with super-patient coach Ben. The horsebox was great, cosy and warm - especially with the log burner. We used the outdoor barbecue, but it was really handy to have the hob and grill too, so we weren't reliant on cooking outdoors all the time. The hot tub was amazing! Would definitely reommend it. Corinna is really friendly and helpful, and even showed our 3yo how to feed the animals in the mornings. The site has plenty for the kids to do - climb frame, trampoline, swings, slide - and space to roam, where we could keep an eye on them. There's loads to do in the area, too - Puzzlewood, Perrygrove, Whitestone Walk, the Clearwell Caves, Goodrich Castle, the butterfly zoo... the surroundings are beautiful, and Camp Hillcrest is great place from which to explore it.

Cute spot by Offa’s Dyke Path
We had a fantastic stay in the horsebox! It was a great place to spend the night between our two days walking along Offa’s Dyke Path. Though we were only there one night, we enjoyed such amenities as the fire pit, the skate part, the mini golf, and the adorable animals. The horsebox itself was great as well - surprisingly spacious and comfortable for four adults. We also enjoyed the coffee and the sourdough that Corinna baked for us! It was all very fun and memorable.

Fun and a little bit different!!
Such a special place! It’s a kids dream destination where they can run a bit wild. Didn’t know about the workshops till we got there, but the girls tried spray painting and loved it. Went and explored puzzlewood and Monmouth. Thank you!!

Camp Hillcrest Horsebox
Camp Hillcrest is so cool! Some friends and I decided to make Corinna's horse box our home base for a few days of biking and hiking through the Wye Valley. The location was amazing. We used the sauna, Corinna made us a couple of meals, some bread, we played giant chess, chatted with the skateboarders (yes!) and had some really great slumber party laughs bunking in the horse box.

From the host
Camp Hillcrest is a small holding in the Wye Valley with a difference. Stunning views of the Wye Valley, totally rural but with added bonus of fun activities. Indoor skatepark, tree nets and hot tub. Pets welcome. Two friendly dogs on site along with pigs and chickens. Workshops and catering available.
Nearby attractions

Camp Hillcrest is near the village of St Briavels (one mile) in the Wye Valley National Landscape, on the edge of the Forest of Dean. On-site activities include one-to-one skate lessons and graffiti or print workshops – which should be booked in advance. Off site, it’s a short stroll down a country lane to where you can join Offa’s Dyke National Trail. Alternatively, keep on walking and head on footpaths through steep woodland to reach the banks of the River Wye. There, an alternative route tracks the river. Host Corinna can help you to organise kayaking trips on the river, mountain biking or electric bike hire. For families, the enchanting Puzzlewood offers a great day out (five miles) and for history buffs, there’s plenty to see including Tintern Abbey (four miles) and the castle at Chepstow in Wales (eight miles). It’s the same distance to the English market town of Lydney.

Food and drink

The Pantry in St Briavels is the closest shop, two miles from the site. It’s well stocked with local produce and a great place to stock up if you want to cook in the horsebox kitchenette. It’s also where you’ll find the closest pub, The George, which does food. The Ostrich Inn is a recommended pub with a good menu and a lovely beer garden in Newland (six miles).
