This is our piece of Desert. Come take a look!! Learn more about this land: Is the journey half the fun? Do you dream of off-grid living or expedition camping? Do you enjoy shows like Naked and Afraid or Alone? If you said no to any of these questions we may not be the right Hipcamp for you; but if you said yes… you’ve found the right spot. Ocotillo Acres is a nudist friendly campsite and long term project that Molly and I have taken on which allows us a place to get away from quite literally everything about city life. We are remote and the drive out can be difficult. A 4wd vehicle can be required as the roads are rough and rocky, but the rewards are plentiful once you arrive. We are so remote in fact that in Feb 2021 we were happy to host “Alone: The Arctic” and “Alone: The Beast” contestant Donny Dust with Paleo Tracks Survival and Ryan Maguire with Wyld Ryde Outdoors as the location for a few of their Primitive Survival Workshops. Once arrived you will have 70 Acres of pristine Chihuahuan Desert to explore as you wish. We have cleared out a camping area, built a nearby rain catchment structure to provide shade, and have a tool box with emergency essentials if needed. Other than those items, there is nothing to facilitate a comfortable visit. If you're still reading this... the place is amazing. Stars fill completely dark skies, and coyotes howl to welcome you to their home. We've seen Tarantulas, Quail, Aoudad, Horny Toads, all types of cactus, fossils, and even if Molly doesn't believe me... a big freakin' rattlesnake. We do ask that there be no hunting and no killing of the wildlife, but you'll have all 70 acres to explore and we hope you see a bunch. While we like to think of our place as a destination, we are located about an hour away from both BBNP and BBRSP if that’s why you’re visiting the area. Feel free to set up your Basecamp here and daytrip to either park, or plan your visit on either end of your stay in the area. Due to our location Ocotillo Acres is a fair weather destination and if rain or snow occurs before or during your visit, your arrival or departure could be delayed by several days while the roads and river beds dry. There are only two routes to get to the property and they both go through areas that can flash flood during heavy rains. While there are not any bathroom or shower facilities, there is a portable toilet (Luggable Loo) and trash bags on site. If used we ask that you be prepared to haul out all waste. While our desert retreat is pet friendly, please clean up after them and dispose of properly. There is very limited cell signal. Satellite communication or emergency beacon is recommended. There are structures visible from some parts of our property, but do not rely on people actually being in those structures; especially in an emergency situation. Have an Instagram? Ocotillo Acres
If you seek a remote camping experience where the campsite is encircled by mountains with 365 degree views free from the sight of other structures and unmarred by light pollution of any kind, Ocotillo Acres is the place for you. It's literally a journey back in time. I give it my every recommendation. Phil and Molly are highly responsive to questions and great hosts.

Fantastic Site in Big Bend!
This is an absolutely amazing property. It's in the backcountry of Big Bend, and you'll definitely get that remote feeling. The hosts do a great job of getting you the information you need to get to the location. No doubt we will stay here again.

Relax and Recharge @ Ocotillo Acres
Our stay at Ocotillo Acres was unbelievably quiet, restorative, and beautiful. During our two- night stay, my husband and I enjoyed the outdoor space of this exquisitely rugged Hipcamp. Well-maintained with a fire ring, covered area, and lots of open room to roam—It was a perfect spot to recreate and recharge. The AWD/4x4 road we took to Ocotillo Acres from Terlingua provided a sense of adventure, and ensured we would be far away from any hum or buzz of civilization. When we reached the site, we were treated to a silence like we’d never experienced before. Occasionally we would hear the sound of a bird flapping its wings overhead, or the whistling of the wind through the desert flora—but that was about it. Our favorite part of the our stay, aside from vast, panoramic views visible from the campsite, was our hike through the dry riverbed. Maneuvering through the tall, canyon-like walls that the river had shaped into sharp culverts, wide trenches, and sheer drops (where waterfalls cascade in more precipitous seasons) was exhilarating, and yielded so many interesting finds; fossils, stones, and huge crystal clusters were abundant. It was easily our most memorable hike in Texas thus far. Thank you for sharing your awe-inspiring land with us! We seriously loved our time here!

Ocotillo Acres
Fantastic property with amazing views in every direction. The add for the property doesn’t do it justice. To be honest, only a trip there to explore it will. We enjoyed walking the roads and didn’t venture to far off of them. Still plenty of sights to see, sun and views to enjoy. We will certainly be back.

Beautiful and Far From Civilization
The campsite felt far from civilization but close enough you could just return at any moment. The property was as described with no other noisy campers close by. The night were very peaceful and super dark making it possible to enjoy the night sky. The drive in takes some time but well worth it.

Private and beautiful campsite
This is such a lovely campsite! It’s very private, we barely saw anyone drive by. The arroyo on the property is incredibly beautiful and fun to explore. The road to get there from Terlingua took us about 50 minutes, it’s a bit steep and rocky, we did it in a Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. Phil and Molly sent us really helpful directions and tips of where to eat in town. Definitely stay here if you want privacy and natural beauty!

Peaceful Seclusion
We stayed over the Christmas holiday (12/24/20 - 12/27/20) with our two dogs (Mastiffs). As avid campers, we have been fortunate enough to spent time in some wonderful campsites over the years. This was the most secluded and enjoyable camping experience we have ever had!! It is exactly as advertised, but even more incredible than we expected. Very quiet and peaceful. We did not encounter any other people during our stay. We also spent hours walking the dirt roads with our dogs, and did not have to worry about cacti at all (as long as the dogs don't stray too far off the path). Phil and Molly were great, and the campsite was very clean and well maintained. Highly recommend!!

Deafeningly quiet, brilliant stars
Phil and Molly's desert camp is very remote with maximum privacy. While I was there the only activity was nearby dirt bikes on Hen Egg Rd. Allow at least an hour to make it to camp from either direction. If you're pulling a small RV be advised that you will have to back in to the site. Go slow, air down at least 15 pounds, and be mindful of the many blind corners. I cannot recommend this site for larger trailers or for vehicles with low ground clearance. 4 wheel drive was necessary for me in a few spots but may not be an issue for other drivers.

Ocotillo Acres
Remember when your dream of camping was quiet solitude filled with nature, peace and beautiful sunsets. Remember when the sounds that invaded your quiet solitude were imagined to only be coyotes greeting the morning, the breeze across the desert, and the sound of your own heartbeat. This place exceeds those dreams and the reality makes your imagination pale in comparison. If you want another tent every 20 feet, screaming children, idling rv’s, electrical outlets, and shared bathrooms; this isn’t for you. If you want the galaxy on view without light pollution, zero crowds, no tourists, privacy, no litter, and peace ; then look no further. It’s beautiful. It’s primitive. 4wd is recommended. Follow the route that Phil provides. Bring water and bring shade. We will return here again, it’s perfect for what camping means to us and it’s perfect for day trips to the National and state parks.
