Find extreme solitude and unforgettable views of Guadalupe Peak at this desert escape next to Guadalupe Mountains National Park! This is choose-your-own-adventure camping. The terrain is rugged, and the dust and wind blow some nights. Once you're here, there are few amenities (unless you book our cabin, Li’l Capitan). If this sounds fine — you don't mind roughing it — you'll be sleeping under the stars at the foot of West Texas' tallest mountain range. And who else can say they've done that? Camp among the ocotillo and yucca as you bask in epic views of El Capitan and Guadalupe Peak! We have three picnic tables scattered around the property and two portable toilet chairs for emergencies (no toilet paper provided). Otherwise, there are zero amenities here. No water, no shelter. Also, Far West Texas can be windy and dusty. If that's no problem, you'll have 20 acres of open desert to find your home away from home. There are plenty of rocks, so feel free to build up the fire rings! Ocotillo Grande is accessible to vehicles that have at least 6 inches of ground clearance and can handle dirt roads, so it's a great option for people who will be arriving via a typical sedan or compact SUV (unlike our site Guad Amighty, where a high-clearance 4WD vehicle is required). Please note: We've received feedback that Ocotillo Grande's bumpy trails are not suitable for small cars or large RVs. Campers who enjoy their time in this special place are the ones who are self-reliant, embrace the adventure, and don't mind roughing it in the middle of nowhere. Looking for a campsite with the closest, most breathtaking views of El Capitan and Guadalupe Peak? Well, you found it! This site is 30 acres, and you are welcome to camp anywhere on the property. I like the spot where I put a fire pit and picnic table next to three tall yuccas. If you're feeling adventurous, you can also hike to the top of the hill for epic views in all directions (and a mere 4.5 miles from El Capitan). Totally up to you! This is a remote desert campsite, and you will have to drive a couple of miles on a sandy trail that is prone to sudden washouts. If you get stuck, it's extremely difficult to find help. Proceed with caution! Also, I recommend arriving before dark. If you don't have a high-clearance 4WD vehicle or aren't comfortable driving on uneven dirt roads, please check out our other amazing sites, Ocotillo Grande and Willow Hill. They are much closer to the highway and are also really special. For RVs, camper vans, and travel trailers, you really do need high clearance and rugged 4WD, no exceptions. Do you not even care anymore? Then you might as well camp next to our storage container. It's 50 yards off the highway and 11 miles to the Guadalupe Peak trailhead. Your car will need at least 5.5 inches of ground clearance to handle the dirt road to the site. No lowriders!

Camp on 10 secluded acres across the highway from our main gate and 9 miles from Guadalupe Mountains National Park. There are no amenities here, but you are welcome to build a fire ring and fix up your site using the rocks you find on the property. Essentially, you are pioneering the site for yourself and future campers! The camping area is brushy and is nestled between a tall hill and a large stand of desert willow trees. Large RVs and small cars beware: You have to make a tight turn at the entrance and pull through a narrow 9-foot-wide gate. Then you drive on an unmaintained dirt road to access this site. So I don't recommend large RVs. Nor do I suggest low-profile sports cars. (Mid-size sedans with normal ground clearance should be fine). Expect highway noise. Otherwise, you’re in the middle of nowhere, and you’ll have the land all to yourself! GPS coordinates: 31.7915387, -104.8639316

Escape the elements when you stay in Li'l Capitan, our air-conditioned camp next to Guadalupe Mountains National Park! Relax on the rooftop deck and enjoy a sky full of stars, plus incredible views of El Capitan and Guadalupe Peak, the tallest mountain in Texas. Our little shelter has two bed platforms (one queen-sized and one twin). We also have a convenient outhouse. Important: BYO bedding, water, and toilet paper! There's plenty of room to sleep on the roof and lots of land for tents if you have a large group. Limited RV access: The entrance is probably too steep for large RVs. Our driveway is unpaved, so you’ll need a car with typical ground clearance (no low-riders). GPS coordinates: 31.7879161, -104.871603

Everything was as described and how we expected it to be. No surprises. Come prepared! We were alone for the night and enjoyed being under the stars with no humans around (well except for the highway but the noise wasn't too bad up there). If you love being outside and enjoy the view of the mountains you should come here. We really liked it!

The freedom of choosing the tent locations is one of my favorite attributes of this area. It is very secluded and only 15 minutes from Guadalupe Mountain National Park. You can see El Capitan with a great view from the campsite, and the immediate surrounding geology is very nice. We did not adequately prepare for the wind when we visited, so I would keep that in mind. Overall, very easy booking through HipCamp, Wes was very nice to talk to when I called, and the instructions to the campsite were clear as day. Worth every penny, thank you Mr. Wes.

The site name fits: awful! I thought they were just being sarcastic and cheeky, but it was akin to paying for my family to sleep on airport chairs. The description made it sound like the shipping container was what made it awful, but, in fact, the it was the only positive element. It was the only thing providing a lick of privacy from the highway to potty in the toilet bags that you must bring. 100 feet away on the other side of a barbed wire fence is a busy highway with consistent traffic all night. This site is NOT safe for children! With your ear to the desert ground at that distance, an 18-wheeler at highway speeds sounds like an airplane landing. On the other side is the road by which you access the site, which the pipeline workers are free to use. There goes your privacy to potty! The road is rough! The description says that you need 4 in. of clearance, but I would recommend trucks and SUVs only. Our vehicle scraped a few times and the debris on our exhaust pipe left a burning smell, making us wonder all night if our van would start in the morning. Perhaps our experience could have been slightly better had we been able to set up our tent behind the shipping container to block highway noises, but not only was there not enough brush cleared to provide space, the ground in that spot was covered with big rocks. Power lines also run right down the property, making a pinging sound all night. Also the lock for the gate didn’t work. Truly awful. Should NOT be a camp site.

It was pretty good. The shipping container isnt a big deal and isnt in the way of any views. The tent area was big enough. But its right next to a busy road so if you have trouble falling asleep with alot of noise it might be an issue.

This was a great stay! The container was perfect for our belongings and to sleep in. The porch on top had amazing views of the mountains and the stars. The air conditioner inside was a great addition and even the pit toilet was nice. We would definitely stay here again.

Absolutely loved staying at Good Guad! The views of El Capitan and the Guadalupe Mountains. It was wonderfully remote and made for great star viewing. Highly recommend and we’ll be back!!

Great site so close to Guadalupe NP! The view was incredible. Wes is a great host and very responsive to questions. He also provides very detailed maps/directions so you know exactly where you're going, and there's a very close alternative campsite that's available if you don't think you can make it. I will definitely be staying here again on our next visit to Guadalupe.

If you're coming from Guadalupe Mountains National Park, west heading east, look for the Bridge Ices Over sign on the right and just after the bridge you will see the back of the deer crossing sign and the red gate on the left. If you see the Good Gaud sign on the left, you have gone too far. You can get your vehicle about 20 yards past the gate, then there is no road to go further in, but we had a good time walking around and exploring. It is right off the highway, so you do get a lot of noise from it, but after 9 traffic dies down quite a bit. You can probably camp further out to avoid some of the noise if you wanted. It is only about 15 minutes from the park.

We loved the Lil Capitan Cabin at Good Guad Land Co. The upper deck was a great place to enjoy the views of the Guadalupe Mountains and the chiminea was in a great spot for views too. It was clean and well set up. The outhouse was a nice amenity as well. We arrived during a cold snap and were grateful for the heat pump heater. Wes was very responsive and easy to work with. We would absolutely stay here again.

It was everything I was looking for in a Hipcamp. A private getaway with cell service close to a few national parks with stunning views. Leveled ground was nonexistent for a rooftop tent but we made it work. It was a little bit further down the road than the Apple map suggested.
