The posting for this campsite by this host does not even begin to describe how beautiful and off grid this place was. Met briefly with the host and truly enjoyed the stay. If you are looking for a beginner's off-road experience and a place to unplug from the world this place is perfect. I highly recommend it. There were places to hike and the stargazing made this trip worth it.

This camp is on the edge of the Christmas Mtns. The peace and quiet was just what we needed to let go of the stresses of life. Having the shelter for shade provided just the right place to setup a hammock and take a much needed afternoon nap. If only I could duplicate the serenity of this site at home. Then life would be perfect. Brad was an excellent host and we are already planning our next trip.

Weekend Trip to Good Guad Land Co.

We ended up booking this spot super last minute. Sun was already going down once we arrived, but didnt have any issues finding the entrance or campsite. There's a picnic table on site, some solar lights around the campsite parameter, and the tent sites are soft enough you wont have any trouble driving your stakes down. Like others have mentioned, you can hear the highway noise some, so bring earplugs if youre an extremely light sleeper. The noise didnt bother me any and never woke me up throughout the night. Great views of the Guadalupe Mountains, and not too far from the visitors center.

Located just 2 miles off I-10, 8 miles to the West of Sierra Blanca, and 80 miles South/South-East of El Paso. This property is truly a part of the "OLD WEST". Sierra Blanca was named after Sierra Blanca Mountain, just North-West of town. The town came into existence when competing railroads for a second (Southern) transcontinental railroad line came within 10 miles of one another in 1881. Jay Gould, famous railroad magnate and robber baron, drove a silver spike commemorating the event on Dec. 15th 1881. The town sprang up around that spot, although the population didn't reach 350 people until 1914. It is best described as grazing land that is flat to slightly sloping terrain covered with desert sagebrush and grasses. Learn more about this land: Primitive campsites offer nice views, solitude, and a small flat space to set up camp next to your vehicle. No shade, toilets (bring your own), or other amenities are provided at this time but are in the works. Sierra Blanca has mild winters and very hot summers but the desert can get cold at night. The weather is generally sunny but come prepared for changing conditions. This is not a commercial campground. Site is great for large groups. Larger RVs have trouble turning or parking so please no rvs over 26 ft. Bring your own toilet. Wildlife include rabbits and hares, javelina, woodcock, teal, sandhill crane, quail, pronghorn, mule deer, duck, dove, rattlesnake, rails, gallinules, and moorehens, toads and a variety of lizards. There is something for everyone to feel free to bring the whole family. DIRECTIONS: Once you are on Road Runner Circle, go past the house on the left with the Christmas lights on. Please continue down the road and follow the road around the curve to the left. The campsites will be on the left and side behind the rock walls. The campsite number that is booked is the campsite you will stay in. Additional details to note: - We now have an above ground pool to keep cool in during the summer! Covered with a shade sail the water stays nice and chilly. ($10 fee/person) - You can stay connected if you'd like to, as cell reception and wifi are both available by the showers. Feel free to unplug during your stay though. - Seeing other campers on your trip at the campsite is very standard, as the sites are far enough apart to feel like they are yours, but they are not private. - Non potable water is provided on-site. We have an artisan well on property that has been certified as drinkable. The showers and non potable water is located approximately 1/4 mile from campsites 1-7. Located just 7 miles from the entrance to Big Bend National Park, and 10 miles from the visitors' center at Big Bend Ranch State Park, it is a perfect base from which to explore all the hiking, boating, and scenic beauty that West Texas is known for. The arts, history, and entertainment of Terlingua Ghost Town are less than 2 miles away. Like most ruins in the Ghost Town, my stone house was built in the early 1900s to house a miner’s family from the nearby Rainbow Mine. I bought the property in 1986 and began restoring and rebuilding. In 2019 I retired here from NYC and began exploring possibilities for sustainable tourism. West Texas is one of the best places in the United States to view the Milky Way (both Big Bend parks are certified as International Dark Sky parks). We use shielded LED lighting around buildings and pathways to cut down on light pollution and optimize stargazing opportunities for our astrotourists. And we are applying for dark sky certification from the Texan By Nature program. Bear in mind that this is the desert, in all its rugged glory. There are critters, rocks, plants with thorns, slippery slopes, sink holes, rusted artifacts and broken glass from decades long past. Bring sturdy shoes and a flashlight, and stay on the paths! We may eventually add a few more sites and expand our amenities, but our intention is always to provide remote, low-density accommodation for folks who are respectful of the land.

The Tierra del Sol Basecamp is an open desert camping area located within Terlingua Ranch, 3 miles off of Hwy 118, 19 miles north of Study Butte and 22 miles to the entrance to Big Bend National Park. This region of far west Texas is well known for its remote ruggedness and beauty rapidly becoming the go-to place for those wanting to get away from it all, without having to spend a fortune to do it. It’s one of the last frontiers of North America and One of the only two National Parks in Texas. The Basecamp will reside on the 40 acre property. In the center is an area of approximately 6 acres flat, with rising limestone ridge lines to the east and west, open skyline to south with a view of Bofecillos Mountains, an area characterized by volcanic deposits of lava and ash-flow tuff and sedimentary deposits of conglomerates and sandstones. The four mountain tops; Packsaddle, Hen Egg, Panther and Agua Fria Mountains provide an amazing view during the day and at night, breathtaking night time views of the Milky Way and the multitudes of stars to gaze upon unlike any other place in North America. The morning sunrise over the eastern mesa brings its own spectacular views. Surrounding the 40 acres are many things of archaeological wonder. A Rock Hounds dream of minerals, stones and fossilized prehistoric microorganisms, as well as, the potential of finding the fossils of large prehistoric aquatic mammals. Yes, you are free to take a small sample of the thousands of quartz and calcite stones found in huge abundance. As you come to then end of Mailbox Rd., you'll see a residence to your left. Humans have been on the site and estimated 7,000 years now and there is strong sense of peace and continuity in the land and waters here. An historical marker on site relates a famous shoot-out between The Texas Rangers and the infamous Potter gang. The wells are shallow, spring fed, and sweet with limestone, so bring your favorite tea or coffee. And a hat! The river is flowing well, but burn bans may be in effect.

Rio Bravo Ranch is a family owned ranch that borders the Rio Grande and Casa Piedra Road. We have cultured a love for camping and the outdoors on this ranch as children and young adults. One day we were sitting on "the backside," enjoying the amazing vistas, solitude and a campfire when the idea came to us that we should share this amazing place with others seeking this type of experience. We tried to think about what makes camping enjoyable to us - no immediately adjacent campers, a nice fire ring/shade structure, a nice, large tent site and vistas with unobstructed views. We have incorporated this into our campground design which, when completely finished, will encompass several hundred acres of Chihuahuan desert vistas. We are also fortunate enough to have a large riparian area on the property. It is in this area, amongst the 40ft tall cottonwood and willows, we often find Gambel's Quail, Scaled Quail, Javelina and numerous bird species including the occasional turkey. We would love nothing more than to share this wonderful place, where we grew up, with souls seeking solitude, adventure and inspiration. Our eastern entrance is just a few miles outside the Big Bend Ranch State Park boundary, conveniently located on Casa Piedra road about 1.6 miles north of FM 170.

Redcreek Nature Ranch

The Kothmanns came to Texas from Germany, landing at Matagorda Bay on December 31, 1845, after a three month journey at sea. They spent the remaining winter months in miserable conditions on the coast, finally making their way inland to New Braunfels in April 1846. After a brief time there, they became part of the first wagon train of 120 original settlers to Fredericksburg, arriving on May 8, 1846.Heinrich Conrad Kothmann, born January 31, 1798, died August 27, 1881, and his wife Katherine Pahlman Kothmann, born March 1, 1810, died February 15, 1905, left Hanover, Germany, September 26, 1845. My great-grandfather, Heinrich Friedrich Kothmann, born February 10, 1835, died September 1, 1915, was their oldest son.They were part of the very first founding families of Fredericksburg. Heinrich worked as a cabinet maker and served as the town musician, often playing the violin for money. During some of the most trying times, Friedrich walked barefoot with his father 80 miles to Austin where they found work splitting railroad ties for 25 cents per day. From those earnings, they had to feed and board themselves.The Kothmann family was integrally involved in the early life of Fredericksburg, and with Providential protection, survived wide-spread disease and death. While life in the young town became increasingly more comfortable as time passed, Heinrich was drawn by the desire to own land and raise large numbers of livestock. In 1856, the opportunity to do just that presented itself when he was finally granted 640 acres of land in the Fisher-Miller grant. The original passage he had bought for the family in Germany for $240 had entitled him to this property located west of the Colorado River between the Llano and San Saba Rivers. A strong Indian presence and political and institutional financial problems had prevented the completion of this grant at an earlier date.Holding strong to his dreams of giving his family a new start, he saved his money during the early years in Fredericksburg. With that he was able to buy an additional 640 acres, along with his grant of 640 acres, when the area opened up and the family was able to move to the Willow Creek region in eastern Mason County.Starting over once again as pioneers in the wilderness, this time at the age of 58, Heinrich and Katherine built a new home, raised their children, and helped the older sons get started in the ranching business on their own. After a dozen very difficult years and some unbelievable good fortune, the Kothmanns were now living their dream of raising large numbers of livestock in the fertile Hill Country of Texas. Their burial site on the original family homestead at Art, Texas, seven miles east of Mason on HIghway 29, is designated with a Texas Historical Marker.Their oldest son, Heinrich Friedrich (Fritz) Kothmann, my great-grandfather, became a very successful businessman and rancher. He was appointed the first sheriff of Mason County. He established the Premier Ranch, on the Llano River, raising pure-bred Hereford cattle. The original entry gate to the ranch still stands on the east side of Highway 87 between Mason and Fredericksburg. In the 1870’s he built a large and modern home on the ranch which drew attention from near and far. It is still in use today.Fritz and his brother Dietrich were business partners in a number of various enterprises, including several cattle drives out-of-state. Fritz’s first wife was Sophie Hartwig, born March 16, 1833, died July 24, 1883. Their fifth son was my grandfather, Eli Henry (Lee) Kothmann, born September 10, 1872, died August 1, 1951. When he died in 1915, Fritz’s ten children were all established on their own ranches and each inherited $25,000.This sum was a remarkable amount of cash for someone whose sole source of income was ranching in the raw territory of the Texas Hill country at the beginning of the twentieth century.Eli Henry and his wife Amelia Hahn, born November 8, 1875, died January 28, 1972, were married on her birthday in 1899, in Mason. They ranched and began raising their family on the Llano River in Mason County. Ten years later they decided to make a significant change, and in the spring of 1909 bought 6,000 acres for $3.00 per acre in eastern Kimble County between Junction and London.It is the southern portion of that purchase near the headwaters of Red Creek that is now Red Creek Nature Ranch. This land, which was a virtual wildlife refuge and untapped wilderness in 1909, is still pristine in many ways 106 years later. When someone visits the ranch today there is considerable evidence of forward thinking, creativity, and hard work that left the environment intact, while functioning as a productive working ranch for four generations.My father, Howard Harris Kothmann, born March 6, 1904, died December 24, 1974, was the third son of eight children raised by Lee and Amelia on this property which became the passion of their lives. They taught their children to have great respect for the land and to be good stewards of it. Each child was given educational and economic opportunity.For many years my father ran his own ranching operation and assisted his mother with hers after his father died. My father was able to purchase more and more land over the years from no other source of income but the raising of sheep, goats, and cattle. In August of 1941, Howard married my mother Mable Perkins, born July 9, 1918, died April 18, 2002. She was a devoted wife and mother.Howard and Mable raised three children. I was the oldest, born October 6, 1942. I had two sisters. Amelia was born December 30, 1943 and died in 1999. Marlene, born March 25, 1949, lives on her part of the family ranch two miles north of my home, which was built by my parents in 1954. It is located at the headquarters of Red Creek Nature Ranch.I have two sons, John James, born May 16, 1968, and Kevin Cameron, born April 4, 1970. James has a daughter, Kristin Lynn, born August 1, 1990. James and Kevin live with me on the ranch and work diligently to maintain its character and integrity.
