The very best native blackland prairie known to exist in the world. The prairie is surrounded by trees with plenty of shade for camping. If you get hot, take a swim in the spring fed pond that has cool water currents in certain spots. Or take the kids fishing off the fishing pier, and if they don't catch one, I'll give your money back. Come see us, enjoy nature and have fun.

Texas Safari Camp

64 sites ¡ Lodging, Tents31 acres ¡ Kaufman, TX
Welcome to Texas Safari Camp Escape the stresses of city living on this heavily wooded 31 acre pristine wildlife habitat. Relax your body, refresh your mind, heart and spirit. Only one hour east of Dallas but it feels like another world. This piece of east Texas paradise is 20 minutes from Buc-ee's, restaurants, grocery stores and about 25 minutes from Canton First Monday. We offer a much more personal experience than any State Park. Your host is Randall Oliver, a woodworking artist whose energy, creative vision and love of the outdoors have transformed this property into the jewel that it is. He has been organizing group campouts for 30 years and enjoys hosting, bringing people together and inspiring a passion for the outdoors. Everyone is sincerely welcomed regardless of race, religion, color, creed or sexual orientation. Randall enjoys sitting around the campfire with his guests, sharing stories, laughter and good will. He can teach your kids how to build a campfire and paddle a kayak. This property is his back yard and the people who camp here are treated like family. At the end of a one lane rock road- this is a very secluded, QUIET and safe property. It is perfect for tent campers (sorry no RV's) with abundant clean, flat tent sites. It's positive vibe attracts good people (including a lot of first time campers) and is more peaceful and relaxing than most state parks. It is next to a 950 acre wildlife park. The Texas Zoofari Park has 900 exotic animals, many can be seen from the road (or you can pay to drive through). This can make for some interesting wildlife noises while sitting around a campfire. While it adjoins the wildlife park on two sides, Texas Safari Camp is in no way affiliated with Texas Zoofari Park. This is an environmentally important property. It is part of the largest old growth hardwood creek bottom in Kaufman county. The only clearing has been done around the ponds. No hunting is allowed. It has never been in ag use and all of the native brush and cover has been left to benefit the wildlife. Imagine two ponds in the middle of a forest. Enjoy swimming and kayaking in the clear water front pond. Kayaks and paddleboards are available on request. Both ponds are stocked with bass, cat, crappie and bluegill. You can hike the jungle trail back to a peaceful, secluded seating and hammock area we call Heaven. There are three camping areas with fire pits overlooking the front pond- the Smokey Hollow, the Waterfront and the Little Forest areas. You can camp on the front berm for an elevated view of the property. The back pond has two camping areas with firepits. Deep in the jungle, it offers a higher degree of seclusion but it is farther from the parking areas and outhouses. There are no preassigned campsites- it is first come first serve. Camping is $22 per person per night. Kids 12 and under are $12.00 per kid per night. Day visits are $12 each for kids and adults, payable in cash upon arrival. Friendly, non barking and leashed dogs are allowed for free. Most people camp around the front pond but you can camp anywhere. Campfires are restricted to the existing fire rings. There is a rustic outhouse with a modern, ventilated composting toilet and sink and a hummingbird window touch of class. Water and electricity is available behind my home as well as an open air cold water shower. The hand crafted Hummingbird Treehouse has leaded glass windows, screened operable windows and a loft sleeping area with an operable porthole window. It overlooks the front pond and features a full size bed, lights and outdoor tables and chairs. Bring your own sleeping bags to enjoy this comfortable and classy alternative to tent camping. It rents for $80 per night for two people. No food, smoking or pets are allowed in the tree house. Texas Safari Camp Rules There are no specific site reservations so it’s first come, first served. Tent camping only- no vehicles allowed on the property. Off road wagons are provided for hauling your gear back to camp. Front pond camping areas are 30-100 yards from the two parking areas. Wagons must be returned to parking area after being unloaded. Careful, humane catch and release fishing only in the two ponds and only single, barbless hooks are allowed. You can gather and burn sticks off the ground and split oak firewood can be purchased. No chainsaws, no cutting, carving or harvesting wood from trees. All garbage (including food scraps) must be packed out. No burning of garbage. Parents of non swimming children must provide a personal flotation device (PFD / life jacket) and personally supervise their swimming. No sun block or insect repellent can be used by swimmers. All forms of hunting, guns, bow and arrows, bb guns, slingshots and weapons of any kind are forbidden. No electronic music is allowed (without ear buds), acoustic music is allowed but there is a 10pm to 9am curfew for noise. Campers must be respectful of the property and other campers. Auto alarms must be disabled. Loud, vulgar and drunken behavior, fireworks, generators or anything that disrupts the peace and tranquility of the property is forbidden. Property has minimal cellular service.

Fieldsong Farm

2 sites ¡ RVs, Tents13 acres ¡ Lucas, TX
In 2013, we bought our 13 acres from a larger parcel of land that had been owned and farmed by the Snider family for 150 years. (Note that we live on Snider Lane). The Sniders played an important part in the development of our town, Lucas, and surrounding schools. The rest of the land has been sold to two families, and all three purchasers (that includes us!) are establishing small family farms. Hurray! Plus the Snider's old house and barn next door are being renovated by the new owners! Since 2013, we have brought in water and electricity to the land, built fences, a house and several barns. We have a flock of chickens, a bunch of loud, nosey Nubian dairy goats, 2 cats and 2 dogs. We farm organic vegetables, and have planted some fruit trees. We are committed to conservation of our land and the wildlife that call it home, and are working to restore our wildflower meadow (location of the campsite) to original prairie state. Come see us; we'd like to share it all with you! Learn more about this land: Come to Fieldsong Farm, absorb the peace and serenity, and leave refreshed!  Stake your tent on the edge of our tallgrass wildflower meadow, and immerse yourself in diversity where the city ends and the country begins.  Enjoy a fire in the fire ring from your seat on a "porch" swing as the sun goes down and the wildlife begin their nightly symphony.  When the sun comes up, you'll have many choices to make--cycling, horseback riding, fishing, boating, paddling, hiking, running, strolling, visiting with the goats, cats and chickens, helping with farm chores, or just sitting to enjoy the peace and serenity of the farm.  There are many great shopping and eating choices withing 15 miles.   Breakfast will be brought to your campsite for an additional fee, booked in advance.  Horse pasture rentals is available, also booked in advance.  (We do not offer horseback riding,) Eggs, local honey, seasonal veggies, baked goods artisan food products, goat milk products and firewood are available for sale.  No dirt bikes, ATVs or RTVs; no motorcycles except as transportation. Camping on Lake Ray Hubbard guide

Overview

One of the largest lakes in North Texas, Lake Ray Hubbard, lies just a half-hour drive from downtown Dallas. When the temperatures soar in summer, pack your swimsuit and head to the water to cool off with a swim, picnic at the lakeside parks, or rent a canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard. Or why not BYOB (bring your own boat) to cruise the 22,000-acre lake and try your luck fishing for striped bass and catfish? Lake Ray Hubbard has no public campgrounds, but a few RV parks and resorts sit within minutes of the lakeside.

Where to go

West Shore

A short hop from Dallas, Lake Ray Hubbard’s west shore has a number of public parks where you can picnic by the shore, drink in the lake views, or take a swim in the summer months. Play a game of volleyball and choose from two swimming beaches at Windsurf Bay Park, head to the golf course at Waterview Golf Club, or fire up the barbecue at Lakeside Park South.

East Shore

Drive across Interstate 30 to the east shore of the lake, where the Harbor at Rockwall affords some of the most impressive lake views. Take a peek at the landmark lighthouse, dine at one of the harborside restaurants, and stick around to enjoy the nightlife. To get on the lake, Chandler’s Landing Marina has boat rentals and a boat launch, or head north to hit the mountain trails at Squabble Creek.

North Shore

There are plenty of good reasons to visit the northern shore, including a golf course, a winery, and the lake’s only RV park, which sits between Lake Ray Hubbard and Lake Lavon to the north. The neighboring lake makes a worthwhile detour, too, with scenic hiking trails, a public campground, and several sandy beaches.

South Shore

The south shore of Lake Ray Hubbard is the most undeveloped corner of the lake, making it a great spot for boaters to escape the crowds. Alternatively, head to the Heath Golf and Yacht Club, which has a championship golf course and walking and biking trails right by the lakeshore.
