Tired of the city ordinances that restricted raising fouls, I decided to look for an acreage that is not too far nor too close to the city and which allowed the raising of farm animals. As of this writing, we have 2 beautiful heifers, 18 sheep, and colorful giant kois in the pond that once in a while can be seen when they swim near the surface.
Stay in the log cabin, or pitch a tent. Enjoy stargazing, or just enjoy the peace and quiet of the property.
Pick wild grapes
or wild blackberries (when in season) or spring wildflowers. Kayak or canoe in the pond.
Bring your fishing gear and bait.
Cabin use is free, but these are STRICT RULES.
1. No pets please, not even emotional support animals of any kind due to allergy in the family (we use the cabin when not booked).
2. No smoking inside the cabin
3. Do not use the bathroom towels for kitchen purposes
or to wipe off dirt
4. Please no outdoor footwear indoors, but you are welcome to wear clean indoor footwear. Violation will result in forfeiture of the entire deposit
5. Cars MUST be parked on the rocked section, thus walking is necessary from this point.
This is a 2-3 minute walk. The driveway might be dry but, no vehicles will be allowed past the rocked section due to unpredictability of weather. If it rains, vehicles will get stuck in the pasture.
6. Never leave food - solid or liquid - where ants can find them or you will cause them to infest the house including your bed! They can do so faster than you can imagine.
7. Please do not bring more people than officially booked, or we will cancel the reservation. No refund. We also close the gate once you have checked in to prevent the animals from escaping.
8. The moisture content can cause shrinkage or expansion of the ground, which can lead to leveling issues to the cabin. So please be aware that doors may or may not open or close smoothly.

You won’t be over crowded here as we currently only have 7 total camping sites. However, we do have enough property to accommodate large parties, reunions or any other type of get-togethers.

You might hear the sounds of the coyotes yipping in the night or perhaps one of the great horned owls calling out from a big oak tree.

The Rock Pit is a 5 acre swimming hole located in Trinity County that has been there over 50 years. Long ago they had dug out an area on a hill for rock on the dirt roads, and hit and underground water table. There are no fish in the Rock Pit, as the pH is 4.5, so no fish will live in it. I recall swimming there as a small boy, and wanted to share my memories with others. Depth ranges all over, but the deep end is around 15 feet. I have 5 kayaks currently, but bring yours if you have them, along with your vests.
There is fishing in Lake Livingston, my place is north of it. There is access to Lake Livingston via White Rock Creek. A public boat ramp in on Highway 94, just outside Trinity. Or you can go back towards Trinity, to highway 357 and go to a ramp closer to the big lake.
Tall pine tress, a few Oaks, and maple trees surround the place. Bring your mosquito repellant, as you are in the country!
The place is raw right now, but I am planning improvements such as a few A frame cabins, a showering area and so on. So many things to do!

7. Please do not bring more people than officially booked, or we will cancel the reservation. No refund. We also close the gate once you have checked in to prevent the animals from escaping.

The Rock Pit is a 5 acre swimming hole located in Trinity County that has been there over 50 years. Long ago they had dug out an area on a hill for rock on the dirt roads, and hit and underground water table. There are no fish in the Rock Pit, as the pH is 4.5, so no fish will live in it. I recall swimming there as a small boy, and wanted to share my memories with others. Depth ranges all over, but the deep end is around 15 feet. I have 5 kayaks currently, but bring yours if you have them, along with your vests.
There is fishing in Lake Livingston, my place is north of it. There is access to Lake Livingston via White Rock Creek. A public boat ramp in on Highway 94, just outside Trinity. Or you can go back towards Trinity, to highway 357 and go to a ramp closer to the big lake.
Tall pine tress, a few Oaks, and maple trees surround the place. Bring your mosquito repellant, as you are in the country!
The place is raw right now, but I am planning improvements such as a few A frame cabins, a showering area and so on. So many things to do!

I loved loved LOVED camping here. It’s a true paradise in east Texas. If I could stay a whole week I would. A huge storm came through Saturday night so we just relaxed in the tent and enjoyed the rain banging against our tent. The trails are beautiful and rugged in a way that makes you feel far away from the city. We had our fire pit glowing all weekend and enjoyed the sunset disappearing into the trees and moons-rise glowing above our camp. The free Kayaks are such a great touch. The water hole is a perfect place to refresh yourself and feel at ease.

The ranch was a great place for our 3-night stay with our dogs. The site we chose (#9) was secluded and large - big enough for a family gathering. It was mostly shaded, which was great for keeping cooler on warm days. We noticed a lot of variety in the types of sites available - some on the smaller side, some very large, some remote, some in more open areas - so anyone should be able to find the right spot for their needs. The main bathroom (no electricity/hot water) was clean and well-kept. We enjoyed the trails, and even enjoyed getting a little lost in the woods! The host was friendly and efficient. I'd recommend it and would definitely go back.

This was our first camping trip with our toddler, and I couldn’t have found a better spot!
The property is peaceful, beautiful, and well kept. Julie took great care of us. Site 17 is secluded and surrounded by shade trees, close walk to an outhouse, and has easy access to trails. The lake is not far at all, and our son loved fishing, the boats, and just throwing rocks in the water.
We will definitely be back.

5D ranch was a wonderful stay! Campsites were in great condition and the property is well maintained (clear pathways, clean trails, etc).
Campsite 10 is very secluded and exactly what I was looking for. Perfect if you want to truly feel “away” from everyone but still a couple minutes walk from other sites and the out house. Other campers consisted of families & dogs that were all very kind! We were able to meet some folks at the fishing pond while having plenty of space to do our own thing.
But I must say that Julie and her family are what made this an incredible experience. From the second we checked in to the moment we left, Julie and her daughter were so welcoming. Felt like we had visited several times :) will definitely be back!

Great camping experience at 5D Ranch! The host was there to greet us on arrival, showed us the way, and provided a helpful map. The campsite was private, peaceful, and perfect for our family trip with our 2-year-old and dogs. We had a fantastic time and would definitely come back again.

What an enchanting little piece of land. My family and I loved every second of our stay. We pitched a tent and filled our days with fishing and our nights with campfires. Having the cabin near by was perfect for little things like needing a microwave, or a bed if the sleeping bag became untenable. The pond is so lovely and the cabin is perfectly oriented for sunrise and sunset so if you can’t find shade you can just go in there and cool off for a bit. Highly recommend this spot for tent camping with access to amenities!

Fantastic camping on Todd’s land lots of open area to walk around and explore. There is a great pond to fish and swim in. Comes with a paddle boat and Jon boat. I will say you can hear the near by road most of the night but it didn’t bother us too much. 10/10 would book again.

I went tent camping for a couple of days at CircleC and it was a great time. Terry is very friendly and responded to our messages right away. The property itself is well laid out with a couple of nice ponds. The on-site restroom is great and there's a common area for eating. You also have direct access to the lonestar trail! I'll definitely be going back and I would highly recommend.

About
Whether you prefer forest hikes or fishing on the lake—Huntsville State Park has you covered. On the southern rim of Sam Houston National Forest, there are over 2,000 acres to explore, including more than 20 miles of woodland trails, where you can hike, bike, or bird-watch. Set sail across Lake Raven in a canoe, kayak, or paddleboat; cool off with a swim at the designated swim area; or fish for crappie, catfish, and bass. Campers will find plenty of space at the three campgrounds, all by the lake, plus screened shelters and cabins.
Notable campgrounds
- Best for RVs: Raven Hill Camping Area has 23 mostly paved sites with full hookups.
- Best for lake-view tent camping: Coloneh Camping Area has 60 water-only sites, many of which look out over the lake.
- Best for water-loving campers: Prairie Branch Campground has 77 sites for RVs, vans, and tents, all close to the swimming beach, boat ramp, and fishing pier.
Tips for snagging a campsite
- You can reserve sites at any of the park’s campgrounds in advance via the Texas State Parks website.
- Campsite reservations open five months in advance.
- Campsites can book up on summer and holiday weekends—book as early as possible, especially if you have a larger RV or a particular site in mind (such as those by the lakeside).
When to go
Huntsville State Park is open year-round, but the most popular time to visit is from mid-February through Thanksgiving. Visit in spring migration for the best birding opportunities, in autumn to admire the fall foliage, or in summer to swim and paddle on the lake. The park is busiest on weekends, so plan a weekday visit if you’d like to dodge the crowds.
Know before you go
- Huntsville State Park is located 70 miles north of Houston or about a 75-minute drive away.
- Park entrance fees are required in addition to camping fees, and general entrance reservations can be made up to one month in advance.
- Facilities include restrooms, picnic areas and group shelters, playgrounds, a boat ramp, fishing piers, and fish washing stations. A store sells camping and fishing supplies, drinks, and ice cream. You can also purchase groceries and camping supplies in Huntsville, a 20-minute drive away.
- Alligators are common in the park—swim only in designated areas and never swim after sunset.
- There are wheelchair-accessible bank fishing areas, restrooms, and campsites in the park. The Prairie Branch Camping Area (including the fishing pier and boat), park store, and boat rental area are also accessible.

Beautiful State Park. Highly recommended!
Beautiful state park with great camp sites. Campsites have large concrete picnic tables, lantern poles, and fire pit with grills. Restrooms with showers. Playgrounds. Lake with 2 fishing piers and boat ramps. Kayaks for rent. Local store within the park for a few necessities. Quiet and peaceful. Wonderful experience. Looking forward to returning. They also have screened in shelters available to rent.

Easy access to restrooms and along the water so you can go for a dip and relax or check out the Lonestar Trail and learn some history of the area. Well kept restrooms but a busy campground in summer.

Having done dozens of trail races here, I feel like I know every turn, hill, and root in the park. It's a great park for getting out in nature. The camping at Huntsville State Park is fairly straightforward, although pleasant. Plenty of tent and RV sites as well as cabins, a few of which are climate-controlled. Summer camping is tough. Heat, humidity, and mosquitoes create a challenging environment, but fall, winter, and spring camping is very pleasant. There are no primitive camping sites in the park, so when you wander the trails, you'll head back to the drive-up sites to call it a day. Canoeing and fishing is very popular here as well.

We go to Huntsville often to take an easy escape out of Houston.. It also has easy to learn on Mountain biking trails for anyone looking to get into the sport

We camped at Huntsville in the dead of winter and were the only campers at the entire park! It was a bit surreal and such a beautiful experience. We were able to bundle up and canoe Lake Raven not having to worry about alligators (which there are warning signs everywhere in the park) and being able to relax in the stillness and quietness of the Piney Woods.
