A Mountain Retreat Perched atop a stunning mountain peak, the Cliffhanger RV offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city below and surrounding natural beauty. This lot has been carefully developed by the owner, John Schwerdtfeger, with an extensive amount of work dedicated to enhancing the space. John has meticulously shaped the landscape, ensuring a level, accessible, and scenic environment for guests to enjoy a truly unique outdoor experience. Features and Improvements: Custom-Designed Padsites: Multiple padsites have been strategically placed at varying elevations, giving visitors privacy and a sense of seclusion. The padsites are leveled for ease of use, designed to accommodate RVs of various sizes, including larger motorhomes and trailers. Road Access & Maintenance: The lot has been connected to well-maintained roads, making it easily accessible even for larger RVs. John has spent countless hours building and reinforcing the roads to ensure stability and smooth access. Additionally, periodic maintenance is performed to ensure they remain in excellent condition despite mountain weather. Water Infrastructure: The property has a robust water management system in place, including a water well with pressure tanks. These systems are built at three key elevations to ensure reliable access to water, even in the most remote parts of the property. Stunning Views & Natural Landscaping: Surrounded by nature, the lot offers unobstructed views of the valley below. The landscape has been enhanced by John's personal efforts to build retaining walls, stabilize slopes, and manage runoff, ensuring that the environment remains safe and pristine. Several designated walking paths give visitors a chance to explore the land and take in the views up close. Privacy and Seclusion: The Cliffhanger RV provides a rare opportunity for solitude, with ample space between the padsites. This makes it an ideal spot for individuals or families looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy a peaceful mountain retreat. Unique Experience: The lot offers an immersive outdoor experience that blends nature with modern RV comforts. Whether you’re here for a short-term stay or longer, the Cliffhanger RV Lot offers the perfect mix of adventure, and relaxation.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. You can reserve one of the park’s 101 campsites in advance via the Texas State Parks website.
  2. Campsite reservations open five months in advance, and all sites can be reserved, including primitive and equestrian sites.
  3. Campsites can book up fast for summer and holiday weekends—book as early as possible, especially if you have a particular site in mind.

When to go

Davis Mountains State Park is open year-round but busiest from March through Labor Day. Daytime temperatures can reach over 90°F in summer, but the mountains are generally cooler and less humid than the surrounding desert, and it’s still enjoyable to hike and camp during this time. But temperatures drop after sundown, so bring warm clothes even in summer, and expect nights to dip below freezing in winter. Wildflowers start blooming in spring and are most impressive after rainfall.

Know before you go

  • Davis Mountains State Park is located three miles northwest of Fort Davis.
  • Park entrance fees are required in addition to camping fees, and general entrance reservations can be made up to one month in advance.
  • Facilities in the park include restrooms, picnic benches, and a park store selling souvenirs, snacks, and drinks. You can purchase groceries, firewood, and camping supplies in Fort Davis.
  • Regular campsites have picnic benches, grills, and access to restrooms/showers; some are also accessible to wheelchairs. Primitive sites have no facilities or water, and campfires are not permitted (fuel stoves are allowed).
  • Bird-watching and stargazing are highlights. Pack your binoculars and keep campsite lighting to a minimum to preserve the dark skies.
