Tres Caballos

3 sites · Lodging7 acres · Las Cruces, NMLocals consider this property one of the best secrets of the valley. The main house is an old adobe built sometime in the '30s, added on to over the years. Joe Augustine raised his family as well as race horses here and it is often referred as the old Augustine place. Things I love about this place; a landscape in every direction, all the mountains that create the Mesilla Valley are visible, the way the light changes, the sound of the train, how quiet and peaceful it is, watching the crops grow and change, the very dark nights. It is an amazingly healing space to be, it kinda sucks the hustle right out of you allowing space for expansion.  Come be still and listen. Access to the river and mountains is easy, day trips abound, and town is close enough but not too close. Ask me about an Artist Retreat beginner or masterclasses availableLearn more about this land:Welcome to dark star filled nights and birdsong days. This is your Gateway to all that southern new Mexico has to offer and it's a lot! Your Casita is a very well appointed two bedroom two bathroom, full kitchen, dining area and living room. All with a retro/boho feel, mid century modern meets vintage finds. The vistas are always enchanting and can be enjoyed from either of the covered porches, or out by the stock tank pond, you will have a front row seat to the Dona Ana and Organ Mountains, and probably a couple of exotic horses grazing in the pasture, just because! We have Parks, Monuments, public lands all for the hikers, foodies will delight in the many restaurants, food trucks, brew pubs and distilleries. Arts and culture abound also with a variety of museums, art galleries, theater and fiestas. And yet the farm feels remote, a slice of solitude, it is the perfect gateway to the world and the perfect place to come home to.

Quail Run Tiny Guesthouse

2 sites · Lodging1 acre · Alamogordo, NMQuail Run was delivered to us June 10th 2020. In decorating the house I wanted it to have the feel of the Old West so is rustic and cozy at the same time . The outside was finished with American cedar and corrugated metal giving it a modern twist on the old west. Inside you'll find neutral tones, curtains made with from burlap bags, kitchen sink which is actually a galvanized pail. There are other surprises in the bathroom which is quite ample. Upstairs in the loft is a memory foam mattress quilts, fluffy pillows and two small Windows which offer a pleasant cross breeze. Also displayed outside on the fence is an old saddle which has seen better days. It was a gift from a mescalero Apache fellow whose parents found that saddle in the woods in mescalero in the 1950s. Also it's not beautiful I consider it a treasure. Make sure you take a look while you're here Once the house was delivered we went to town adding our own touches to the decor, actually reworking the kitchen and finishing all the wood. The fellow who built it also delivered it from Denver for us, set it up, and built a ramp right on site. We rewarded him with a spaghetti dinner and sent brownies later, hahaha! Our tiny house is a little beauty and very popular! We hope you visit soon!

Straddling the borders of Texas, Mexico, and New Mexico, El Paso is a trove of southwestern landscapes. Camping here means waking up to Chihuahuan Desert sunrises and rolling mountain views. Hiking, biking, and rock climbing are right out your door. And leave the rain gear at home—the sun shines 300 days a year over El Paso.

The starry Texas skies are best seen from an RV park, private ranch, or Texas state park just outside of town. A local favorite is Hueco Tanks State Park—one of El Paso's best-kept secrets.

Native American rock paintings and unique formations abound in this sacred place. Camping, hiking, rock climbing, and bouldering are some favorite activities. Just remember to plan ahead if you want to snag an access permit. (The park hands out 70 per day).

Smack in the heart of El Paso, you find Franklin Mountains State Park. With 37 square miles of mountain desert, it's the biggest urban park in the USA. Rustic RV and tent camping gives you easy access to the 100 miles of rugged trails. For even more adventure, ride an aerial tramway up North Franklin Mountain, or rock climb McKelligon Canyon. (Remember to BYOG—bring your own gear).

Of course, Texas isn't the only place to pitch a tent. Head just across the state border into New Mexico for wide open skies. The desert campground at Pancho Villa State Park is a good pick if you love visiting historic structures.
