Rainforest Aquaponics in California

Host Michael Vredenburgh says:

Mikey and Meri met as students in UC Berkeley’s bioengineering department. After graduating, we began our careers in tech and realized that we wanted to dedicate our lives to employing the science and engineering we learned into developing environmentally friendly, sustainable technologies to be employed globally in remote locales. In addition to developing their dream farm, they continue to work remotely, Meri as an editor for Nature, and Mikey as a forensic biomechanics consultant.

Description of surrounding area and farm: Rainforest Aquaponics is located in a temperate rainforest, as the name implies. The farm borders a national forest, and is located fairly remotely (15 miles down a dirt road). The trees in the area are extremely diverse, with a wide variety of giant pines and oaks. Our farm averages between five to ten feet of rain a year with a dry season in the summer; consequently, water is a plentiful commodity, thus inspiring aquaculture. Rainforest Aquaponics is located on 22 acres of south facing slope. RA is unique for a farm, as it is heavily forested.  We are currently excavating fish ponds between trees, leaving the canopy unchanged. Description of activities (crops, activities, goals, etc.): Rainforest Aquaponics is still in its first season – ergo, WWOOFers here will have the opportunity to participate in the development process, rather than running a pre-existing establishment. Current work is being done setting up for crops; these primarily include fish (excavating ponds for aquaponics using hand tools to preserve the trees) and plant crops (organizing vegetable beds, which also includes digging, and arranging semi-wild orchards of native food crops). Occasionally we will work in areas that require regrading and road clearing for vehicle access and on other owner-proposed home establishment projects.
