Weekend Trip to Carl’s Campsites - Riverside

I have been coming here a couple times a year for three years now. Every time is a great experience. I can’t say enough about the beach, the new play ground, the friendly owners. While I still go to other places, I will make sure we still have this on our list a couple times a year. Oh, and the address is now in Waze as the name of the campsite.

2 nights at Paddlers Creekside Campground

We stayed at one of the drive-in truck tent sites at Paddler’s Campground, and it was everything we could have hoped for and more. The site was spacious, quiet, and perfectly nestled near the river—offering stunning views and the soothing sounds of flowing water all day and night. What truly made the stay special was the warm and genuine hospitality.

1 night at Tranquil Fisher River Cattle Farm

Great little spot for an overnight stop on the way to a wedding. We were visited by a group of calves in the morning which was really neat. Thanks for the wonderful spot!

Amazing hosts and well built camp site with plenty of counter space! We had a blast fishing and dropping our kayaks in the New River.

I stayed here as a half way point traveling, and I’m actually obsessed. I will be staying here again! It’s a beautiful property, the river is right there and it was quiet all night.

1 night at 100 Acre Wood

This was one of the very best Hipcamp sites I have visited. I had the "up on top" site that was wide open, spacious, with a spectacular view of the valley and mountains beyond, and total privacy. The host, David, was gracious and kind enough to give me a tour of the entire property. That was a real highlight.

1 night at The Rocky Knoll

This was my first time using Hipcamp, and it exceeded all expectations. The views were stunning, the atmosphere was peaceful, and the bonfire pit added the perfect touch to the experience. The campsite itself was phenomenal—well-maintained, quiet, and surrounded by beautiful nature. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a serene getaway.

Weekend Trip to 100 Acre Wood

Took my kids to Up On Top for the weekend and we had the best time. Really a core memory trip for them exploring, getting to ride David’s ATV and touring his wood shop, cooking out our meals, and having an amazing mountain view. David and Kathy were outstanding hosts and made us feel welcomed and at home the entire time. This was our first HipCamp trip and it will be hard to beat. Great weekend all around. Highly, highly recommend.

Great camping experience with cover from the rain! We camped for 2 nights and booked this site because of the pretty much constant rain. We had an amazing time and the cabin was perfect. Would definitely come back again sometime.

1 night at Riverside Campground at Seneca

This is such a beautiful spot tucked away in the woods, the sound of the creek soothing you as the sweeping views take your breath away. David was a fantastic host, and the directions to the campsite were clear and direct. I enjoyed my stay here and would highly recommend! A surprise visit from his friendly dogs brightened my night, and they got along very well with my dog as well. :)

I loved my time here, there was enough space between each campsite to where they didn’t feel cramped. Even in the rain it was a pleasure to be there!

Weekend Trip to Wilderness Adventure

Cabin camping at this little slice of heaven was everything I was looking for. Everyone working there and staying there were all kind and down to earth. They are pet friendly, reasonably priced, and just good people... What more could you ask for? The property is huge with lots of options for adventure (kayaking, tubing, and canoeing) as well as some hiking paths. The pups and I will most certainly be back!

We absolutely loved the car/truck site!! Bryan and Ryan are just all around great people. You can tell they really love what they do and helping people enjoy the outdoors. We enjoyed the kayak rental and shuttle service as well - the perfect way to enjoy the local waterways. We will definitely be back and loved this trip!

We ended up with less than ideal weather, so we weren’t able to enjoy the entire campground, but our campsite was wonderful! The creek running beside our tent was lovely and there were trees to hang extra hammocks, which the kids loved. It was our first time camping as a family and even with the weather I think we can call it a success! We hope to come back in warmer months to fully enjoy the area.

100 Acre Wood

101 Acres of forested land in the Draper, Virginia area with scattered clearings that are connected by various roads/trails throughout. Over the years cutting roads has been a hobby that has resulted in miles of cleared roads and paths throughout the property that are perfect for hiking, running, cycling, and horseback riding. The property includes a small creek, several ravines, ridge lines and trails to explore. We frequently encounter deer, rabbits, squirrels, and the occasional turkey, black bear, coyotes and Bigfoot. The thing people seem to enjoy most is the privacy and and quiet that allows you to connect with nature with no one else around. Each of the 3 sites is hundreds of yards away from each other. Things to watch out for other than the wildlife mentioned above the two main concerns in this part of Virginia are deer ticks and poison ivy. We are located about 5 minutes from I-81 or 15 minutes from I-77 making it an easy place to stop when passing through on your way to other adventures. If you are coming on I-81, use exit 89-A. Don't let Google maps take you to Frog Level Ct near the town of Pulaski (LOL). Nearby attractions include Appalachian Gem and Gold Mine on Route 100 (5 min), New River Trail State Park (10 min), Claytor Lake State Park (20 min) and the Town of Draper has a couple small town shops to explore including The Draper Mercantile and Trading Company and the newly opened Conery where you can get wonderful ice cream cones and more. Also, check out the Draper Mountain overlook on Rt 11, just 10 minutes from our HipCamp. We love hosting campers and are happy to help make accommodations to help you have an enjoyable stay. We have 3 sites but only allow 2 to be in use at a time on the property. This insures that all guests continue to feel complete privacy from others and allows us to always have an alternate site available if campers want to change. Available "Extras" include portable toilet setup, Woodshop class making a cutting board, big foot siting's as well as various camping gear items and games. If there are other extra's you would like to see or something you forgot to bring please let us know and we will see what we can do.

Jessup Mill

Hi there. Here is a little rundown of everything we do at the mill…. So, as far as camping, there are two main options on either side of the river; the mill yard or primitive camping across the river. In the mill yard, we do festival style camping, meaning that there are no individual campsites per se, but rather a large grassy lawn near the mill and bathhouse with shared fire pits, picnic tables, charcoal grill, and sinks for water/dishes. We also have two platforms up in the woods that are good for a little more privacy and are completely shaded, but do require a small climb up the hill. The bathhouse has three restrooms and hot showers in each. Across the river, there are several more primitive sites that are generally very private and offer great sounds coming from the river and waterfall, but no facilities. Most sites are car accessible, and a 5 minute walk back over to the mill (or a 1 minute drive). Lastly, our newest camping spot on the primitive side is a river front beach right by the dam with space for a several medium sized tents and a private fire pit. The beach is hike-in only (2-3 minutes along a mostly flat trail). Our normal rate is $10 per person per night. Firewood is available for $10 per wheelbarrow load. We accept cash, credit card, Venmo, Paypal, and crypto. We are also fairly flexible on check in/check out times, but just let us know if you’ll be arriving at odd hours. Dogs are generally welcome as long as they are kept on leash. Here is a little rundown of tubing at the mill (May-October, weather permitting). We have two tubing options available. We have a short Fun Run that takes roughly 45 minutes, and cost $10 per person for as many rides as you’d like. The river bends sharply like a horseshoe in this section, so it makes everything accessible by foot traffic. It’s a 3 minute walk up the trail to the dam, put in and float 30-45 minutes (depending on water level), then a 5-10 minute walk back to the mill carrying your tube. There is also the longer Forks Run, which last 3-4 hours (~2.5 river miles), and costs $15. For this, we shuttle you up the river in a vehicle, and you float back to the top of the dam, then 3 minutes walking back to the mill. Most weekends, tubing starts at 11 am and the last Forks Shuttle is around 3 pm, with the Fun Run staying open till around 5. Also, with enough heads up, we can sometimes arrange for trips during the week. Our tubes are required for each person floating for insurance and liability reasons, but you are welcome to bring your own cooler tubes to carry drinks and snacks. Technically, alcohol is not permitted on the river, but what is in your cooler is your business. Either way, please bring ALL trash out with you! Water shoes are recommended, and we have life jackets on request. Most of our tubes come with bottoms and back rests, but a few are open to the water. Most weekends, reservations are not required, but it does help tremendously if we know when you want to come and how many in your group. Continue past the Hay barn another half mile. Park on the left side of the gravel road along the tree line. Another 50ft you'll see a wood foot bridge across the creek. The sites are ahead, PawPaw is first, then Bloodroot Base Camp (bell tent), and lastly Cohosh Cove is the most private. Each site has a sign as well When driving, please be respectful of the right of way. Drive slowly and respect the farm equipment. Also please do not venture onto the neighbor’s property other than entry and exit. About the property 20 minutes from Blacksburg and 35 minutes from Roanoke, our campground gives you great access to the “Triple Crown” of the Appalachian trail, consisting of McAfee Knob, Tinker Cliffs, and Dragon’s Tooth. Conquer these iconic peaks of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains for spectacular views of the surrounding wilderness. Additionally, explore Falls Ridge Nature preserve, Cascades waterfall, and Carvin’s Cove for hiking, kayaking and mountain biking. Or just stay on the campground and enjoy the hiking and swimming we offer here. Nearby in Blacksburg take advantage of the local breweries or Virginia Tech football home games. You can also find Christmas tree cutting in Floyd county, 45mins away. This property deserves to be shared with others. It is peaceful and beautiful. As your Host, I am passionate about conservation and also teaching people about the medicinal uses of our local herbs. I can lead medicinal herb walks upon request for $25 a person. I typically try to meet the campers if I can upon arrival, I am available for questions and can be hands on or off as the needs of campers suggest. I love the peacefulness the property offers, and that you’re in the middle of the wilderness but also have quick access to things in town. The river campsites are my favorite part of the property. At the main cabin I have goats and chickens which hipcampers are more than welcome to greet.
