Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space.
Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. Most of the buildings out front are artist studios (currently for 16 artists). We like to share the camp with others and watch it come back to life.
All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky.
We want to share our property with those who want to stay for more than one night, so we do not accept inquiries of single night stays. We also don't offer longterm rentals as we focus on short term camping.

The cabin is located on an old apple orchard and budding homestead. It is off-grid and powered by solar. It is a short walk from the parking area (75 steps uphill). The cabin is one room with a kitchenette, hot outdoor shower, and outdoor compost toilet. The cabin can sleep up to three people with a queen bed, futon, and pullout couch. The kitchen includes a gas range, mini fridge, a sink with running water, and basic kitchen cook wear. A propane heater is available for extra warmth on a chilly night. A shelf equipped with books and board games. A propane grill sits on the front porch, and a fire pit out front. The hot outdoor shower and compost toilet are 25 steps from the front door tucked into the tree line. The pond sits in front of the cabin, a picnic table sets by the edge.
We love living simply, and immersed in nature, and have designed the space for others who also share this passion. We often see deer, turkey, bear, fox, and coyote. Maybe you will too! You will love reading your book by the pond while listening to the frog chorus, and taking your evening shower while gazing upon the ancient oaks.
Our location is 15 minutes from the Appalachian Trail and James River access. The Jefferson Washington National Forest is nearby and offers opportunities for visiting waterfalls, hiking, mountain biking, climbing, and paddling. Come camp at the top of the mountain on our private, undeveloped land. You’ll have access to miles of trails through wildflower meadows, old-growth forest, and ridgeline views. The site is peaceful, remote, and surrounded by native plants and wildlife.
This is a primitive campsite — there’s no running water, buildings, or electricity. It’s best suited for campers comfortable with a backcountry setup who want quiet, privacy, and natural beauty.
4WD Access Required:
The campsite is located at the top of a mountain. You’ll need a four-wheel-drive vehicle to access it. Though we are happy to arrange a shuttle for your gear with advance notice.
Water:
There is a year-round creek nearby with non-potable water. Perfect for rinsing off or washing dishes. Bring your own drinking water or a filter. 6 gallons of water will be left at the campsite to put out the fire or wash your hands.
Firewood Provided:
We supply firewood for each stay. Bring your own firestarter or lighter.
⚠️Please don't bring in firewood, it can introduce pest and pathogens harmful to the forest.
Trash Drop-Off:
Please pack out your trash. A drop-off point is available at the base of the mountain near the exit.
Cell Service:
Cell signal is strong at the campsite but I encourage you to unplug and take in the surroundings (P.S. The pictures don't do the land justice!)
Wildlife:
This is a natural, wooded area. Expect to see birds, deer, and maybe raccoons. Bears are uncommon but possible — store food securely and follow Leave No Trace practices.
No Bathroom On-Site:
You’ll need to bring a portable toilet, dig a cat hole, or use a wag bag system. Please be respectful of the land and other future guests.
Seclusion & Stargazing:
You’ll have plenty of space and privacy. On clear nights, the sky opens up, making it perfect for stargazing. There’s very little light pollution here and from late summer through early fall, the Milky Way is visible overhead.
You’ll see different native plants and wild edibles depending on the time of the year.

Our 65 acre farm is secluded and peaceful. We have a small pond with catfish, bluegill, large mouth bass (catch and release only) and a gentle creek. We have chickens, sheep, a pig, cows and diary goats. Enjoy a walk down to the pond and take a picture by the old farm house (from the early 1800's) or explore history in the cemetery. All of the land on the gravel road in which we live was at one time a large operating farm. The original farmhouse is still present at the end of the gravel road.
In recent years the farm land was sub divided. My husband Jacob and I purchased this piece of property 8 years ago. We absolutely love it here and this land is our own slice of paradise.
We have 13 acres of private seclusion with a quiet and peaceful creek spot for camping on the back side of our property. We love having a place where we feel we can be away from it all! Also at the same time we are only a short drive away from downtown Lynchburg as well as quick access to route 460.
We enjoy that we can get on the river quickly and we frequently take advantage of the beauty of kayaking the James River. Together Jacob and I find tranquility while camping and exploring new places. We are excited to share our slice of heaven with you and meet people who share our love for the great outdoors. :)

Our experience from the start was absolutely excellent, and it only got better throughout!
My fiance and I had a magical time. Fran was extremely helpful, very responsive, and recommended the perfect site. The grounds were incredible, so much fun detail, so serene but real and raw feeling. Finley who checked us in was so nice and informative, and Buddy the giant golden retriever was the most incredible host and guardian, walking us up to our site, sleeping outside our tent at night, and showing us around the grounds. He also is one of if not the best groomed outdoor dog (especially long haired) I've ever seen.
The outdoor live amphitheater is spectacular, and we were lucky enough to happen to be around for Mondo Jellyfish King's practice session, and what a treat, these guys know how to rock! The facilities were adorable and well kept, everything you need and more. The turkeys and ducks and rooster and ponds and trails, just endless wonder. You feel the magic from the second you turn in.
Every soul we encountered was so uplifting and welcoming, and you can see and feel the love everywhere you go. When they call this place a sanctuary, they are not messing around. We had so much fun, got exactly the weekend we needed after a very hard couple months. I could not have imagined a more perfect experience!!

My friend and I enjoyed staying at Courtney's spot. We only stayed one night, just wanted a little nature get-away and it was perfect for that. The camp spot is very secluded and serene. We were bummed we couldn't kayak (originally thought there was river access at the site, need vehicle that can haul kayak) but we still had a great time relaxing.

I’m sorry to say that we set everything up at our site and were there for about 3 hours and then we had to tare everything down and leave that same day. Our Pom had a stroke and we had to leave. Our site was nice. I’m just sorry we had to leave. It was very peaceful and quiet. I would definitely recommend the Hip camp for a nice long camping experience. We will definitely return to camp there.

This campsite was absolutely incredible. Waking up every morning to the beautiful views was peaceful and refreshing, and having the river only about 10 feet away from the campsite made the whole experience even better. Falling asleep to the sound of the water and being surrounded by nature was something I’ll never forget.
Terry was also an amazing host friendly, welcoming, and genuinely cared about making sure everyone had a great stay. You can tell he puts a lot of effort into creating a relaxing and memorable experience for his guests. I would highly recommend this campsite to anyone looking for a peaceful getaway with amazing scenery and a great host. I’ll definitely be coming back again!

Weekend Trip to Blue Bird with Heat/AC!!
The stay was absolutely beautiful . It had everything we needed it was my boyfriends first time camping so he was nervous but staying the night here made him change his mind he loved the out doors it was just something quick & simple just to get away for the night . The bus is next to his house but the host didn’t bother us at all . He was on stand by if we needed him . Which i liked for the privacy . We just wanted the wood burning & smiling in each others faces lol . Google Maps doesn’t help you get to the bus but Apple does takes you straight to the bus only thing is we drove in the night we were to literally follow Scott’s directions to keeping left lol we thought we were going in his grass but we over thought it . Lovely stay we will definitely return back thank you .
