Welcome to Arcadia Sanctuary An 83-Acre Mountainside Retreat for Earth-Based Spirituality in Central Virginia Arcadia is our beloved sanctuary for earth-based spirituality, nestled on the southeastern slope of 4,000-foot Mount Pleasant in Central Virginia. Conveniently located near I-81, Arcadia offers a secluded, nature-immersed experience—just a short drive from the modern world, yet miles away in spirit. Please note: There is a town called Arcadia off I-81, but we are not located there. Be sure to follow our directions carefully. A Living Landscape of Forest, Water, and Wildness Our land features a flowing mountain creek with waterfalls, towering Beech and Sycamore trees, and Witch Hazels leaning gracefully over the water. You'll encounter trout, crayfish, salamanders, snakes, and the full chorus of mountain wildlife. With nearly 2,000 feet of vertical mountainside, Arcadia offers trails to explore and camping options ranging from creek side convenience to secluded mountain hideaways. While most of our gathering areas are near creek level, higher sites are available for those seeking solitude—just be prepared for a bit of a hike to the bathrooms, showers, and fresh water. A Natural Amphitheater for Music and Gathering Arcadia is home to one of the finest private stages on the East Coast. Our natural amphitheater—shaped like a pie wedge carved into the mountainside—hosts live performances throughout spring, summer, and fall. With a top-quality sound system and stunning surroundings, it’s a magical venue for music, ceremony, and celebration. Stay With Us: Yurt Glamping, Tent Camping & More Our beautiful yurt is available for rent and offers a unique glamping experience surrounded by nature. For traditional campers, we offer multiple campsites near the creek, as well as more remote locations higher up the mountain. Every stay includes access to the shared amenities: bathrooms, hot showers, fresh water, and community gathering spaces. Meet the Arcadia Community Arcadia is alive with more than just trees and streams. You’ll share space with our free-roaming flock of chickens, ducks, turkeys, and guinea fowl, along with two friendly dogs, nine curious cats, and the human stewards who live and care for this land year-round.

Snuggle up corner

At the end of a secluded spot that we call the Lower Balcony, under towering oaks is the snuggle-up spot which boasts a fire pit in a fairy dell with enough room for a large tent. There are two other sites on the Lower Balcony. No at-site parking which is accessed up a short incline. Help with transporting equipment is available upon request. Car parking is a short walk away. About the property Arcadia is the name we gave to our 83-acre mountainside retreat center for Earth-Based Spirituality. It’s nestled on the southeastern slope of 4000-foot Mount Pleasant in Central Virginia, convenient to I81. (Note, there is a town called Arcadia off 181, but that is not us. Not to confuse.) We have a mountain creek with waterfalls, towering Beech and Sycamore trees, Witch Hazels leaning over the water, trout, crayfish, snakes, salamanders, and all the rest. Our property backs onto the George Washington National Forest and offers 2000 feet of vertical mountainside with trails to explore.  Enjoy biking near your campsite or up on the mountain trails if you are feeling adventurous. There are also bike trails a short car ride away which are both private and public. We live at the base of Mount Pleasant and are happy to offer additional trail suggestions upon request.  In addition to the trails, there are also three large lakes within a short drive: Thrasher's Lake, Stonehouse Lake, and Mill Lake. In the surrounding area, you can also find wineries, Rainbow Mountain wolf sanctuary, and amazing bird watching.  We offer several sites, including some that are higher up the mountain if you prefer more isolated camping. Just note that they are more of a trek to the bathrooms, showers, and fresh water.   During your stay, you may encounter free-roaming chickens, turkeys, ducks, and guinea fowl. Additionally, two dogs, eight cats, and several humans are blessed to call this home.  We are also proud to offer one of the finest private stages on the East Coast with a top-notch sound system and a natural amphitheater which is like a single pie wedge of a stadium.  During the summer months, there are musical events and other extra activities which you will be welcome to join in.  Please check if there is a show planned. About the listing Camp out near the creek within striking distance of the small waterfalls. Relax by the fire pit, or wander around and you might meet the animals that inhabit Arcadia.  Hot and cold running water showers are available, including shampoo. Other necessities can be purchased for a small fee.  We also offer firewood, jams (seasonal), eggs, breakfast, and energy healing, all of which are available upon checkout as Hipcamp Extras.  We don’t have any cooking supplies, but clean, safe drinking water is available from our well. We are very dog-friendly. Up to two well-behaved, quiet dogs are allowed, but please do not leave them unattended at any time. Persistent barkers (barking for more than 20 minutes or complaints from other campers) will be given two warnings before they and their people are asked to leave. Middle Earth - Lower Balcony

Tucked up on the Lower Balcony, between the Overhang and the Snuggle-Up Corner, lies Middle Earth — our most compact site, full of charm and simplicity. Though small, it shares all the comforts of Arcadia: a nearby picnic table, access to toilets, showers, and fresh water, and even a Webber grill for open-air cooking. It’s a lovely spot for a two-person tent or hammock, surrounded by birdsong and soft mountain breezes. Parking is a short five-minute walk away, and we’re happy to help with unloading if needed. No cars are permissible at this site. Please note: Middle Earth rests between two neighboring sites, so if solitude is what you seek, another nook of Arcadia may better suit your dreams.

A fold-up table is available upon request, and you can drive in to unload before parking nearby. A clear mountain creek winds through the forest, its banks shaded by ancient Beech and Sycamore trees. Witch hazel arches gracefully over the water, where trout, salamanders, and other woodland beings thrive. Our land borders the George Washington National Forest, offering two thousand feet of vertical mountainside and trails that invite quiet exploration. Just a short drive away are bike paths, three tranquil lakes — Thrasher’s, Stonehouse, and Mill — and local gems such as wineries, the Rainbow Mountain Wolf Sanctuary, and birdwatching havens. Arcadia is home to a lively community of free-roaming chickens, ducks, turkeys, guinea fowl, two gentle guardian dogs, nine cats, and a few kind-hearted humans who tend this land with love. You’ll find hot and cold showers (with shampoo provided), and basic necessities available for a small fee. We also offer firewood, homemade jams, fresh eggs, breakfast, and energy healing sessions as optional Hipcamp Extras upon checkout. While we don’t supply cooking gear, clean spring-fed well water is always available for drinking. We are dog-friendly — up to two quiet, well-behaved dogs are welcome. Please keep them attended at all times; our resident dogs freely roam to protect the birds at night. Pet-sitting may be available upon request. Your host will greet you on arrival, then give you the space to settle in and enjoy the serenity of the land. While your site offers privacy, you may see fellow campers in shared areas. We have a mountain creek with waterfalls, towering Beech and Sycamore trees, Witch Hazels leaning over the water, trout, crayfish, snakes, salamanders, and all the rest. Our property backs onto the George Washington National Forest and offers 2000 feet of vertical mountainside with trails to explore. During your stay, you may encounter free-roaming chickens, turkeys, ducks, and guinea fowl. Additionally, two dogs, eight cats, and several humans are blessed to call this home.  We are very dog-friendly. Up to two well-behaved, quiet dogs are allowed, but please do not leave them unattended at any time. Persistent barkers (barking for more than 20 minutes or complaints from other campers) will be given two warnings before they and their people are asked to leave. If it is felt that the dog is being unattended the hosts reserve the right to intervene. Pet sitting may be provided upon request. The Host will greet you upon arrival and then leave you to enjoy your stay Cellular service is limited for some carriers, so plan ahead accordingly.  While we recommend disconnecting from the digital world during your visit, we do offer limited WiFi for campers upon request.

Settle into our cozy yurt, a round, light-filled sanctuary nestled by the forest’s edge. It’s simply furnished for comfort — a peaceful space for rest, reflection, or quiet connection with nature. Wake to birdsong, fall asleep to the creek’s lullaby, and let the mountain hold you. It does not have electric power, however it does have a buddy heater that runs on propane (with 2 cans of propane per 2 night stay). Amenities In the yurt you will find Buddy heater carbon monoxide monitor solar and battery operated fan's and lamps. Our experience from the start was absolutely excellent, and it only got better throughout! My fiance and I had a magical time. Fran was extremely helpful, very responsive, and recommended the perfect site. The grounds were incredible, so much fun detail, so serene but real and raw feeling. Finley who checked us in was so nice and informative, and Buddy the giant golden retriever was the most incredible host and guardian, walking us up to our site, sleeping outside our tent at night, and showing us around the grounds. He also is one of if not the best groomed outdoor dog (especially long haired) I've ever seen. The outdoor live amphitheater is spectacular, and we were lucky enough to happen to be around for Mondo Jellyfish King's practice session, and what a treat, these guys know how to rock! The facilities were adorable and well kept, everything you need and more. The turkeys and ducks and rooster and ponds and trails, just endless wonder. You feel the magic from the second you turn in. Every soul we encountered was so uplifting and welcoming, and you can see and feel the love everywhere you go. When they call this place a sanctuary, they are not messing around. We had so much fun, got exactly the weekend we needed after a very hard couple months. I could not have imagined a more perfect experience!!

Loved all the animals around the property. Very peaceful retreat and a great way to get away. We thought it was absolutely beautiful even with the rainy weather and thoroughly enjoyed the stay.

We loved camping here! It was a beautiful piece of land that was far enough removed from other campers that you could feel secluded. The earth was flat and malleable from the clay (but not too messy), making great terrain for tent stakes and setting up anchors for the dogs. Great commodities and clear, effective communication from the host- Immensely helpful and accommodating every time we reached out. Our puppies loved the sound of the wind in the trees and their interest was continuously piqued by the roaming fowl. We particularly liked the white turkeys at sunrise! Definitely would love to return.

Great campground! We needed something last minute due to a change of plans so we were thrilled this place was open. The pond was super cute, we were delighted to see ducks and other birds. The hosts dogs were also so sweet and hung out with us around our fire! What a treat! Def recommend! Her camp is situated in the most beautiful rural neighborhood, driving in at sunset was awesome.

I cant say enough about Frans place! Now once you enter you may feel like you entered in the wrong place. A sign is on a chair telling you to walk down steps to check in..no worries. Buddy the big loveable most precious dog in the world will greet you and show you where to go. You check in woth someone who helps.run the property. You may see lots of people(lots meaning 6 or 7) walking around. No worries again. The all live there and work together to keep thw property working. Its a got a ✌️ peace lets live together vibe! And thats my kind of vibe! Not in a weird way but a beautiful appreciation for rhe earth way. They have turkey, guineas, roosters, Mr Duck, Allie thw old dog, Buddy the most precious dog who walks you back to your campsite at night, tons of butterflies, chicks, Cats...etc! Beautiful piece of property that has butterflies everywhere! Im a nature lo er and even more an animal lo er. After I talked to them and learned about their mission, how they all came together and how unspoiled they wnat thos land to remain, I felt like I was home. My friend and I popped our tent,ate and walked around the property after our hike and we talked to the turkey who had a lot to say. They even visited our site! Buddy came there to greet us but I think the turkey came there to let us know it was time to go! I slept like a baby...and If you know me...I never sleep! I love Fran and listening to her. I cant wait to go back. Thinking about gathering around 6 women for a retreat!

We had an absolutely incredible stay at this mountain yurt in Amherst, Virginia. We came in the winter months (because we’re a little crazy) and ended up getting stuck during a snowstorm — and somehow that made the whole experience even more unforgettable. The hosts were beyond amazing. They went out of their way to make sure we were safe, comfortable, and taken care of the entire time. True hospitality. 11/10. If you’re looking for peace, quiet, and a place to unplug and reset — this is it. Whether you want tranquility or you’re just trying to find yourself for a bit, this place delivers. Also, we have to give a special shoutout to Buddy the dog, who kept us company and made the whole stay even better. Such a good boy and the perfect mountain host assistant. And a big thank-you to the workers who helped us get out of the snow — we seriously appreciated the help more than you know. Awesome place, awesome people, awesome experience. We’d recommend this stay to absolutely everyone.

Overall we had a lovely time at Arcadia Sanctuary. The bathrooms were clean and well stocked. The showers were great and very hot. Fran also provides fresh bath mats and hand towels. Their dog Buddy was a fantastic greeter and guard making his rounds periodically, top notch customer service! The only thing i wished for was a little more privacy. Our site at the snuggle up corner was right in eye and ear shot of the front door of the hosts home. I doubt it would be that obvious during the summer months when the trees have foliage. Getting there was an easy drive through some beautiful farmland.

We had a wonderful experience! Fran was lovely when we checked in and out! Buddy and Ally (the dogs) kept us company throughout the night and made us feel secure! Mr. Duck and the various cats were also lovely to meet! We were the only campers that night, so it felt very private. Just a heads up that most campsites are directly next to another campsite! I would definitely come back with a larger group and reserve two adjacent campgrounds!

Great site, we had some care trouble and couldn’t make it all the way up to crows nest and stayed at one of the sites at upper balcony. We were the only ones there and it felt very private. Walked up to crows nest the next day and it was very pretty. Bathrooms and facilities were well taken care of and there was plenty of wood.

Beautiful property with even more beautiful people welcoming you upon arrival! And some amazing furry friends to boot! This was my second time at Arcadia, and will definitely be back as often as I can be. Didn't get to catch the Mondo Jelly Kings on this trip, missed there last show by a week or two, but would highly recommend catching them if you have the opportunity. They put on a great show when I was out last year. Blueberry Pancakes are to die for!!!

We camped at Far Far Away and it was a great time. The bathrooms were clean and tidy and not a far walk from the site. We were visited by Buddy the pupper several times during our stay and he was an awesome addition to our company. Its a wonderful place to unplug from life, sit back and enjoy the beauty that mother nature has to offer. Fran was wonderful and was just a text away if we needed anything. Looking forward to our next stay at the Sanctuary!

Quiet and off the beaten path place. Highly recommend getting there before dark - paths to sites were difficult to make out in the dark. Site was a bit small for 2 tents and 2 vehicles with another site 4 car lengths away. The bathrooms are really nice - 2 shower rooms and 2 toilet with a sink rooms. Fresh eggs were amazing!

Glamping experience in a yurt
We enjoyed being unplugged from tech and fully immersed in nature. The yurt is nestled in the woods away from the main building and other tent sites so there's plenty of privacy and quiet. There's an opening in the trees above where a myriad of stars can be admired from the deck. I recommend opening the windows of the yurt to let in the sunlight and allow air to flow through the space. It was convenient to use the grill for cooking and the dinnerware for our meals. There is only one pot to cook in so if you need additional cookware, I would recommend bringing what you need as well as a sharp knife, peeler and can opener.

Loved that we had a big space near the creek. The bathrooms were clean and the water got hot which was great for a shower. Loved that they also had firewood available for purchase. Their dog, Buddy, was very sweet and spent most of his day at our campsite with our 4 dogs. So if your dog isn’t friendly with other dogs, this might not be the best option for you.

Our family of four had a wonderful time in Arcadia Sanctuary. The property is very natural and full of beautiful plants, majestic sycamore trees, and lots of cute farm birds roaming around. We enjoyed sitting by the fire and listening to the owls and crickets at night. Buddy the dog checked on us in the mornings as we cooked our delicious fresh eggs. On Saturday, a lively band played from about 4-7 and they invited us to come down to the pavilion for the show. Overall, a very groovy place with good hospitality!

Awesome place, extremely friendly staff and clean showers and bathrooms! This particular spot (stage 1) is along the path to several other campsites (which is fine) so make sure you park a little more to the left or right so other cars can pass. We would definitely stay here again

Our family enjoyed our weekend in the east village! Fran’s place is natural and full of character. We loved the farm fresh eggs, beautiful trees, listening to the owls at night, and meeting Buddy, the friendly dog. Saturday night, a lively rock band played from 4-7 and we were invited to enjoy the show. 😊 We also had fun fishing in Thrasher Lake, about ten minutes away.

The location was great. Fran was out of town. But her helper Kinly was great. Kinley helped us to get checked in and scheduled our breakfast iternerary for the next morning. They gave us our privacy and space. They had a band playing that evening and had food available if we wanted to enjoy with them. It was a nice surprise since we were tired from driving and setting up camp. Breakfast the next morning was delicious. Kinley was very accommodating and even provided shelter since it rained overnight. There were ducks and guinnea chickens running around the property. Their dog Buddy became our favorite visitor. He was always checking in on us and letting us know he was on duty so he couldn’t stay long and he liked snacks when we were cooking. Skyline drive was 20 miles away and there was an awesome farmers market on the way in that we stopped at when we left. They had boxes of peaches and apples marked to go.
