Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space. Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. Most of the buildings out front are artist studios (currently for 16 artists). We like to share the camp with others and watch it come back to life. All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky. We want to share our property with those who want to stay for more than one night, so we do not accept inquiries of single night stays. We also don't offer longterm rentals as we focus on short term camping.

Site 6, aka Woodpecker 7, is a large site, which used to be an amphitheater, so it has many benches and a large fire ring. It is in hearing distance of Elk Creek. It's a sweet spot. We've decided to keep this site open for the winter months (Dec. through March) but the bath house will not be open unless we have unseasonably warm temperatures. There will be outhouses for your use and we can provide drinking water if you need it.

Site 3, aka Bunny 5, is a very large site which can accommodate a few tents and is very private. It's close to the creek and one of our favorite tent sites. You can't drive your car right up to the site though. You have to walk perhaps 100 yards or so.

Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and bordering the Jefferson National Forest. Cabin 2 (Parcell cabin) is a charming log cabin with a large lot, 2 picnic tables, grill and fire pit. It is close to Elk Creek. There are 5 cushioned cots downstairs with additional cots in the loft. Bring your own bedding and pillows. The lot the cabin is on is large enough for other tents, if you want to have another family join you. There will be an additional cost for more people. There is no electric or water in the cabin so you will want to bring a lantern and flashlights. There is water available at the pavilion to fill your water jugs. There is an outhouse just outside the cabin, but a short walk will take you to the bath house if you want a shower and a flushing toilet. Such a peaceful place! We were quite happy during our 3-night stay there. Very spacious, well-spread-out campsites with plenty of greenery between them. (We actually switched from Fox 1 to Fox 2 soon after we arrived -- thank you, Adam, for the last-minute flexibility! -- because the access worked better for our campervan, but both, indeed all, were spacious, flat, pleasant sites.) We enjoyed wandering the land, exploring the creek, soaking up the sun in the huge, open field, and visiting the artists' studios during the scheduled Open House the weekend we were there. Outhouses were clean and quite generously sized, and the bathrooms were clean and had PLENTY of delightfully hot water (but visitors should understand that the shower building is a relic of the facility's prior uses, so don't expect gold fixtures or fancy tile...I do recommend bringing shower flip-flops). All in all, a lovely stay, and quite convenient to Cave Mountain Lake, Devils Marbleyard and Natural Bridge. So glad we found Thunder BRidge!

Despite some rain, this trip was more than we could’ve asked for. Beautiful property with a deep historical significance. Adam was an attentive, hospital & hard-working host. Sounds of rushing water from the nearby swimmable stream made falling asleep a serene experience. Always stocked & well-kept bathrooms was a nice touch. Clean, hot showers after a long day of hiking was much needed & very relaxing. Ping pong tables, baseball fields, obstacle courses, trash drop off.. it has all the amenities a family needs! We camped at woodpecker 7 which was right by the stream & felt very private. The tent sites were far enough apart that it felt like we had the place to ourselves, but near enough that we didn’t feel we were out in the wilderness. We will absolutely be coming back!

Came for two nights, with my adult son. We stayed at Woodpecker 5, screened cabin. It was very clean, and spacious. Very cool, actually. We had one nice day , and a rainy day, so it was nice to come back to a dry place. We used our power bank to watch a movie, to end our rainy day..The creek was right behind it, & was beautiful. We saw an owl and deer. I would definitely return!

We had a blast! Adam was very helpful and responsive with anything we needed. It was very quiet. The campsites for tent camping are nicely spread out and wooded for privacy, and very spacious! The bathrooms were clean and plenty of stalls / showers available. Will definitely be back.
