Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space.
Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. Most of the buildings out front are artist studios (currently for 16 artists). We like to share the camp with others and watch it come back to life.
All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky.
We want to share our property with those who want to stay for more than one night, so we do not accept inquiries of single night stays. We also don't offer longterm rentals as we focus on short term camping.

Welcome to our small Farm, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Madison County, Virginia. Located just minutes from Shenandoah National Park, we offer intimate nature-inspired cottages and camping on our 120-acre working farm. Enjoy an evening under the stars with fireflies and a campfire after a long day hike, fly fishing on one of our beautiful trout steams or touring the local vineyards and breweries.
We currently offer one cottage, glamping and a few campsites for our guests. Our campsites are all private, located acres apart with tables, chairs, firepits, some elevated sleeping areas, some hammock spots and a few with a roof. Three of our spots require walking away from your vehicle, short distances. We have four drive-in sites that will accommodate two or three vehicles. We do not allow RVs or trailers on our main farm due to our narrow mountain driveway. Wisteria Camp has a private driveway, it can accommodate small RV/Trailers. Camper vans are welcome at the main farm!
Our farm store includes our Animal Welfare Approved products such as Eggs, Chicken, Beef, Pork, Lamb and Dairy, as well as produce, jams, coffee and other items from our local community. We offer camping essentials, local art, bike rentals, farm experiences and tours.
The property has miles of trails along mountain spring-fed streams, a small pond and access to three private acres on the Robinson River, a stocked Trout stream, just 2 miles down the road. Our property is centrally located to White Oak Canyon (20 minutes) and Old Rag Mountain (10 minutes) trailheads in the Shenandoah National Park as well as many vineyards and breweries.

The Guinea farm is 18 acres of field and forest on the rural middle peninsula. Only 1 mile from 2 separate secluded dog friendly beaches and a boat launch. There is very little traffic or light pollution here, nature is at your fingertips.

There are 3 sites spaced out across the 18 acres set apart for privacy. Wisteria Treehouse site closer to the entrance gate. Trilogy Micro Cabinz is in the pines 700' beyond that and separated by dense forest. Stargazer Tiny cabin is an off grid rustic camping cabin on the back side of the property.
Each site is surrounded by several acres of forest and close to the edge of a large field. There are roaming guinea fowl that may come make a very loud appearance as they canvas the property eating bugs. Deer, Turkeys, Bald Eagles, foxes, and other wildlife are common guests also. Mid-summer is what I call frog season, Tree frogs are abundant and provide a wonderful soundtrack.
There is an axe throwing board and cornhole boards available.
4 miles from shopping and dining in Mathews Virginia, 15 miles to Gwynn Island. Gwynn's Island is an island located in the Chesapeake Bay off of Virginia's Middle Peninsula. The island is located in the northeast part of Mathews County, south of the mouth of the Piankatank River. It is connected to the rest of the county by a swing bridge over Milford Haven.

My parents both grew up on the southside of Chicago - where having a tree in your yard meant that you had "made it". They decided to use the land to grow Christmas trees. This did not last long :) but the saplings my dad planted by hand are still here & maybe 70' tall!
Then my husband & I bought The Farm in 2017 for the 2nd forty years of our life & my parents built their little house right here. My husband and I immediately knew that our dream was to grow a different kind of "tree", so in 2019 we were among the first group to receive our license to grow hemp. We loved our stay at the private pavilion! We opted to use it as our shelter, so we could easily keep our dogs enclosed. All the animals are friendly, the lakeside is beautiful, our fresh eggs were delicious. Friendly & welcoming host, although I felt terrible my dogs barked at him every time he tried to come by to say hello. We’d definitely love to stay again!

This place is fantastic. From the personal toilets to the wonderfully clean lake, Jud has created a beautiful camp experience for everyone. The adorable tents are roomy and clean. The goats and dogs are friendly and cute. Jud is such a great host and has so much kindness in his heart. He is more than happy to give you advice on the best things to do while visiting the area and welcomes all kind of company. Truly an amazing find and I would be surprised to find anyone who thinks otherwise. I will definitely be coming back as much as I possibly can. Thank you for everything, Jud and stay awesome!

This was my fourth stay at Thunder BRidge in the last three years, and somehow I think I came away loving the place even more this time.
This trip was a little different from my previous visits because we turned it into our first big family camping trip. There were 13 of us altogether, spanning three generations, including four senior citizens. We rented three of the cabins for the campers and the Airbnb on the property for the older folks who wanted a few more comforts. Honestly, I can't imagine a place that could have worked better for a group like ours.
As always, the campground itself was beautifully maintained. The bathrooms were immaculate, and the pavilion ended up becoming the center of our entire weekend. All 13 of us could comfortably hang out together, play games, cook hot dogs, and put out a full spread of food without ever feeling crowded. Having a space where the entire family could gather made an enormous difference.
Adam is also a fantastic host. Over four stays, I've found him to be consistently responsive whenever I've had a question or needed anything. He answers promptly, takes care of the property, and makes the whole experience incredibly easy.
The location is almost impossible to beat if you actually want to explore the Natural Bridge area. Wisteria is such a cute site. Our family of 5 was looking for somewhere to watch the Perseid meteor shower & the open field next to the cabin was perfect. Ian quickly fixed the shower when the water was running low, and being just down the road from the beach was nice. We’d definitely camp here again!

We had such a great time at the camp site! Kevin provided everything we needed to make this suburban girl feel like a woodswomen. The chairs in front of the tent were perfect for stargazing and kayaking on the pond at sunset was magical. We loved meeting some of the animals especially Mona the goat and their four sweet pups who tried to follow us home! 😊 We can’t wait to visit again soon!

Weekend Trip to Sunrise by the Pond

We've taken weekends at this yurt 3 of the past 4 summers and loved it every time. We find it peaceful and our young kids like the stream, poultry, campfires, and composting toilet lol. I'd recommend taking a hammock when you go, lots of great spots in the forest for it.

We stayed in the Shady cabin. It was cute inside and fit 2 people comfortably. The porch with rocking chairs was nice to sit on when the rain came. Would have been perfect if the fireplace was cleared from overgrown weeds so we could get to it to use. But, all in all, we had a fantastic, relaxing time there. Many trails to walk and the creek close by was nice.

1 night at Sunrise by the Pond
Kevin was wonderful! We booked last minute/ day of & he had the campsite perfect & ready for us. He was also very responsive and accommodating when we had some concerns about the weather!
The property is beautiful & the ride there was enjoyable too! I would highly recommend. :)

Loved Adam’s cabin. We saw some people walking by but other than that really private and did not hear anyone camping around us. Very spacious and lots of seating areas inside and out. Loved the back porch with the swing. Definitely would come back again.

We had a wonderful stay at Half-Moon. We arrived a bit later, and were greeted by the soft bells and glowing eyes of sheep out in the field. The walk to half-moon was easy, and the wood chip path felt great underfoot. The available wagon was a nice touch, though we didn't have much to carry in. The site itself felt private, and the outhouse was clean and comfortable. Inside the dome, the setup felt cozy, the perfect clamping experience without any unnecessary frills. We appreciated the dark skies, quiet surroundings, and local wildlife (heard an eastern screech owl in the night!). We would love to return, with more time to enjoy a fire, and some of the local farm offerings!

Incredible place to stay, rained everyday we were there and still managed to keep 2 young kids entertained. Ian was incredibly helpful, woke up with a flat my first day and he was willing to do whatever to help. Haven beach is the perfect spot only a couple minute drive away. Even with the treehouse, WiFi, and projector my kids favorite part was getting to see and hold Ian’s chickens. Grateful of my time here would love to come back.
