Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space. Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. Most of the buildings out front are artist studios (currently for 16 artists). We like to share the camp with others and watch it come back to life. All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky. We want to share our property with those who want to stay for more than one night, so we do not accept inquiries of single night stays. We also don't offer longterm rentals as we focus on short term camping.

Our farm store includes our Animal Welfare Approved products such as Eggs, Chicken, Beef, Pork, Lamb and Dairy, as well as produce, jams, coffee and other items from our local community. We offer camping essentials, local art, bike rentals, farm experiences and tours. The property has miles of trails along mountain spring-fed streams, a small pond and access to three private acres on the Robinson River, a stocked Trout stream, just 2 miles down the road. Our property is centrally located to White Oak Canyon (20 minutes) and Old Rag Mountain (10 minutes) trailheads in the Shenandoah National Park as well as many vineyards and breweries. This property was once a 300 acre plus tobacco farm. We are located within two miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appalachian trail via a gated, public, forest road. Hikers should park at their campsite and walk up. The original log cabin was built in the 1850s and now serves as our dining room. The front portion of the house was completed in April of 1861 and the back in the early 1900s. We have plans to eventually turn it into a working farm which produces tinctures, salves and extracts of various native plants. Learn more about this land: Heavily wooded mountain side with flowing creek. Easy access (walking distance) to Jefferson National Forest, National Forest horse trail and the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appalachian Trail. (Note: You cannot drive to the Blue Ridge Parkway as the path is an old forest road which has been gated, but you can walk up to it.)  We also have a tree house which has AC, heat and electrical connection.     You may camp anywhere on the property.  There is plenty of frontage on the creek and several tents can go up there. Gittn' Pickled is back! Re-opening in August 2026 with upgrades. Gittn' Pickled is located on VA620, a gravel road that doesn't see a lot of traffic. Trout Creek, a lively full year stream, is directly in front of the cabin and provides soothing sounds all day, and night. Gittn' Pickled is .6 miles Trail East of the Appalachian Trail on VA620. Appalachian Trail features Mcafees Knob, Dragon's Tooth, Audie Murphy Memorial, and Tinker Cliffs are just minutes away by motor vehicle. I've prepared a hiking guide to get you started. This is an awesome location to tackle the Triple Crown or just enjoy SW Virginia. Pickles Branch terminates into Trout Creek here. Pickles Branch is a beautiful stream in a cool and richly forested terrain. All of the Miller Cove ground water empties into Pickle's Branch which can become very impressive during high water events. Miller Cove, within the Jefferson National Forest, is an area that was once occupied by a small active community. You will find foundations of old structures, springs, creeks, orchards, mushrooms, ramps, wildlife, and much more. Miller Cove can be accessed, by foot, directly from the site. It can be an especially interesting and pleasant hike without the inconvenience of shuttles and parking. Two bunkbeds are provided with four twin long (35x80) mattresses. These are new hospital bed mattresses with non-permeable covers. Four standard size pillows with non-permeable covers and pillowcases are also provided. You should bring additional bedding as desired; sheets, blankets, etc.

We are a Nature Retreat bordering Nature Conservancy land along a tributary and up and down the Rappahannock River. You can hike along the stream down to the river and up and down the river. You can fish and float the river. There are no trails so a moderate level of fitness and comfort in the forest is needed. You can follow the water ways but it is wilderness. Camping there is primitive but available or you can camp or glamp at Earthwalk Ways Retreat. We are also adjacent to a 50 acre farm on the other side of the creek that is available for hiking. There is a reservoir nearby as well. We are in the midst of the suburbs not far from Fredericksburg, which has some great historic and community places of interest. Our facilities are private and we only rent to one or 2 guests at a time. You can glamp in a trailer, or car camp in a nice campground with power and water or you can go primitive and pack in. All spaces include access to our classical 11 circuit labyrinth and backyard gardens where you can enjoy zen rock garden and other contemplative nature crafts. There are some great extra's here as well including an outdoor jacuzzi and indoor infrared sauna and massage chair. These spa features are another great way to get your zen on here. I offer Forest Bathing and individual retreat support sessions, an quarterly sweat lodge and also vision quest support if people would like to experience a solo nature immersion feast.

Sharp's Island is so named because the Sharp family of Richmond owned it as far back as the 1850s. The old brick foundation you see in the pictures is all that remains of a house that was built on the island in 1895 and stood for 75 years! We consider ourselves stewards of an amazing historic, ecological, geologic, and recreational asset, and we would love to have you add your story to this island's long history! Learn more about this land: One-of-a-kind really only begins to describe 1-acre Sharp's Island! For starters, this is the only legal camping option in the city of Richmond. You read that correctly. This is your own private island, and it's right in the heart of downtown RVA! The Piedmont meets the Coastal Plain right here at Sharp's Island. That makes for amazing fishing, especially during the spring shad and striper runs.  Some other incredible things about camping at Sharp's Island: You can motor up to it from Ancarrow's Landing, canoe over from the trail just below Mayo Bridge, or make this the destination for your downriver raft/kayak trip; at summer river levels there are oodles of great swimming holes along the banks; fire pit ready and waiting for you. And lots more!

This was my fourth stay at Thunder BRidge in the last three years, and somehow I think I came away loving the place even more this time. This trip was a little different from my previous visits because we turned it into our first big family camping trip. There were 13 of us altogether, spanning three generations, including four senior citizens. We rented three of the cabins for the campers and the Airbnb on the property for the older folks who wanted a few more comforts. Honestly, I can't imagine a place that could have worked better for a group like ours. As always, the campground itself was beautifully maintained. The bathrooms were immaculate, and the pavilion ended up becoming the center of our entire weekend. All 13 of us could comfortably hang out together, play games, cook hot dogs, and put out a full spread of food without ever feeling crowded. Having a space where the entire family could gather made an enormous difference. Adam is also a fantastic host. Over four stays, I've found him to be consistently responsive whenever I've had a question or needed anything. He answers promptly, takes care of the property, and makes the whole experience incredibly easy. The location is almost impossible to beat if you actually want to explore the Natural Bridge area. Devil's Marbleyard is only about five minutes away, Natural Bridge State Park is roughly 10–15 minutes away, Virginia Safari Park is around 15–20 minutes away, and we went tubing with Twin River Outfitters in Buc

Weekend Trip to Sharp's Island

Always a great weekend. Maybe be a little careful if parking on 1st St, it's a narrow bumpy road and both of our vehicles got side swiped while parked there over the weekend. Of course this isn't Andy's fault at all, just a heads up that there may be better places to park.

2 nights at Wilderness Adventure

We stayed in the Shady cabin. It was cute inside and fit 2 people comfortably. The porch with rocking chairs was nice to sit on when the rain came. Would have been perfect if the fireplace was cleared from overgrown weeds so we could get to it to use. But, all in all, we had a fantastic, relaxing time there. Many trails to walk and the creek close by was nice.

Camping on the island is a super unique experience. We loved it! Tubing, fishing, and plenty of spots to relax and enjoy the view. Andy was very informative and helpful. We intend to return.

It was so relaxing to be surrounded by nature in the middle of the city! We enjoyed swimming, canoeing, and exploring the island. Andy was also super helpful.

1 night at Sharp's Island

We throughly enjoyed our time on Sharpe’ s island. There was plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the sounds of rushing water. My only tip would be to pack some ground beef/hornet spray when you come. One of party set their tent up on the corner between the two “beaches” and disturbed a ground nest. He was stung several times, went and purchased 4 cans of spay and saturated the ground. That was the only negative thing we encountered on our stay. I will definitely return.

Weekend Trip to Earthwalk Ways Retreat

I had a nearby visit with friends that I took the opportunity to turn into a weekend retreat. Darlene was so nice and welcoming. I appreciate her letting me check in during the evening since I couldn't leave work early. She took the time to show me around the grounds the next morning and then left me to it. The room was cozy and had a nice set up for tea /coffee and any basic cooking you might do on a hot plate. I really enjoyed looking through some of the books in the room, my favorite was an anthology of wisdom and stories from grandmothers. I spent time by the creek and one morning saw 3 deer and a buck wandering across. Also really loved the spa set up. 10/10 I left feeling grounded and will definitely be back the next time I find myself in the area.

Weekend Trip to Thunder BRidge

Loved Adam’s cabin. We saw some people walking by but other than that really private and did not hear anyone camping around us. Very spacious and lots of seating areas inside and out. Loved the back porch with the swing. Definitely would come back again.

3 nights at Sharp's Island

What a treat to be able to wild camp on a beautiful island, be able to jump in the water for a swim, hop on my paddle board for some exploration, listen to the cicadas, sleep to the sounds of water ( and some traffic, but not horrible), and also go for a walk in downtown Richmond or on the excellent Floodwall trail.

Weekend Trip to B and M Journey Farm

Brittany and Mike are two of the kindest, most thoughtful, fun people we've met. A true joy to spend the weekend on their property with family and friend for our camp wedding. It was the most perfect setting and the most perfect weekend we could have imagined. The barn is out of a storybook, natural, lovely, and it was perfect for us to use to eat meals, dance the night away, and for a couple family member to sleep in. It kept us dry from the rain and had everything we needed. The cottage is beautifully renovated and the cutest place to stay full of everything you need - coffee, AC, a bathtub. It was the perfect getaway our second night staying after we camped in a tent the first night. Their land is stunning sitting up high with a beautiful view of the mountains and the vineyard. The greenhouse that sits on their property is such a unique and awesome place to relax in the mornings with a view of the mountains and the land. The animals are another awesome touch - everyone in our crew absolutely loved hanging out with the goats, cows, and puppies and it made for an unforgettable, lovely weekend. The property is so big with such wonderful camping spots, and we will absolutely be back! Thank you Brittany and Mike for allowing us to have our wedding here without any hesitation. We couldn't have dreamed up a better weekend. We are already looking forward to coming back to the cottage for our anniversary!
