Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space. Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. Most of the buildings out front are artist studios (currently for 16 artists). We like to share the camp with others and watch it come back to life. All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky. We want to share our property with those who want to stay for more than one night, so we do not accept inquiries of single night stays. Although we are a primitive campground, we do offer amenities to make your stay comfortable, including portable toilets and trash collection. The recreational draw to this area is hard to beat in VA, and this property has it all for an amazing outdoor weekend! The ranch comprises 40 acres of lowland acreage designated for the camp, including a 5-acre lake. The Cedar Grove sites 1, 2, and 3 are along the banks of Passage Creek located within a sparse, groomed Cedar grove. They are all a short walk (or drive) to the lake and beach amenities. Each site has varying access to the creek, so check out the site details. These sites are extra large and can accommodate multiple family groups, as well as, travel trailers of all sizes up to off-road motorcoaches in site 1. There are no hookups, so just boondocking. Pack it in, Pack it out. Generators are allowed but please be aware of the other sites and direct the noise away. The Lakeside Mountain Stream site is very secluded, nestled between the mountains and the lake. It overlooks our 5-acre lake with mountain views in the background. It's on the opposite side of the lake from the Cedar Sites. This site has its own dock and is just a short walk down a mowed trail to a beautiful section of Passage Creek. An additional seasonal mountain stream can cascade behind the site and run under it to feed the lake when the conditions are right. My wife and I visited this property 19 years ago and we took one look at the Sugar Maple tree in full bloom and we knew this was it. Now we want to share this gem with you! We love to greet our camper guests on arrival, and then we always respect privacy during the trip so you can recharge and enjoy the land. Come stay and relax in one of our four luxurious tents. Our property, with sweeping mountain views, is situated at the foot of the Shenandoah's, Old Rag is just a 15 minute drive, making it the perfect location for tons of outdoor exploration and enjoyment! We are close to countless hiking trails, canoeing spots, apple picking orchards, and wineries. You can also try your hand at fly fishing, or take a dip into the cool, spring-fed pond on a warm day! Weekend Trip to Arcadia Sanctuary

The property is so beautiful, a true sanctuary. Fran is a gracious host, the facilities are clean and easily accessible (depending on where you’re located). I am so grateful to find this peaceful place, I will be back for sure!! I loved the creek and rope swing and other little details that show the magic of the mountain. This place is fantastic. From the personal toilets to the wonderfully clean lake, Jud has created a beautiful camp experience for everyone. The adorable tents are roomy and clean. The goats and dogs are friendly and cute. Jud is such a great host and has so much kindness in his heart. He is more than happy to give you advice on the best things to do while visiting the area and welcomes all kind of company. Truly an amazing find and I would be surprised to find anyone who thinks otherwise. I will definitely be coming back as much as I possibly can. Thank you for everything, Jud and stay awesome!

The Farm is everything I want in a campground. It was a personal and beautiful oasis with the added benefit of being 10 minutes away from a grocery store and Walmart. It is very well maintained, manicured more precisely and Trevor is a remarkable host. River access, close by vineyard and Luray Caverns, there is not much more to say than I will be back.

We loved camping at Walnut Creek! The creek was at the perfect distance from our campsite, and being surrounded by the woods made the experience even better. The hosts were so friendly and helpful. We were able to cook steak and burgers over the extra fire pit, which was such a nice touch. We couldn’t hike Dragon’s Tooth this time, but we visited Cascades Falls instead, about a 40-minute drive away. It was beautiful, peaceful, private, and felt like a hidden little gem. We had a wonderful stay and would definitely come back!

This was my fourth stay at Thunder BRidge in the last three years, and somehow I think I came away loving the place even more this time. This trip was a little different from my previous visits because we turned it into our first big family camping trip. There were 13 of us altogether, spanning three generations, including four senior citizens. We rented three of the cabins for the campers and the Airbnb on the property for the older folks who wanted a few more comforts. Honestly, I can't imagine a place that could have worked better for a group like ours. As always, the campground itself was beautifully maintained. The bathrooms were immaculate, and the pavilion ended up becoming the center of our entire weekend. All 13 of us could comfortably hang out together, play games, cook hot dogs, and put out a full spread of food without ever feeling crowded. Having a space where the entire family could gather made an enormous difference. Adam is also a fantastic host. Over four stays, I've found him to be consistently responsive whenever I've had a question or needed anything. He answers promptly, takes care of the property, and makes the whole experience incredibly easy. The location is almost impossible to beat if you actually want to explore the Natural Bridge area. Devil's Marbleyard is only about five minutes away, Natural Bridge State Park is roughly 10–15 minutes away, Virginia Safari Park is around 15–20 minutes away, and we went tubing with Twin River Outfitters in Buc

Easily the best camping destination we’ve ever been to! It was my youngest son’s 5th birthday and he had a blast. The swimming area is incredible and pictures just don’t do it justice. It was so peaceful and we basically had the whole place to ourselves. We had a couple ducks visit and so many crawfish for my son to try to catch. We would absolutely recommend this place and we have every intention of returning one day!

2 nights at Rivers Edge Trail Camp

Apple Maps had me turn too early – keep driving until you see the yellow signs Jim has placed by the road. You can’t miss them so keep going. I enjoyed a two-night stay at Jim’s place. It was clean, quiet, and the views were great. The spots are a little close but set up in a way that you still have privacy – each space is very spacious. This would be a great place to come with two other groups, especially if you can get spots 1-3. I stayed in spot 3 and it was set up perfectly. I did have to level out the RV about 6” in the back which was not a problem. Jim was very accommodating but not intrusive, super nice guy. Power hook up was seamless. If you use an external water filter at the water source, you will need a small hose section because the spigot is very close to the ground. I thought I read that the sewer was for grey water only, so I did not empty our black water tank (which we don’t use for #2’s – we bag those). The picnic table and fire ring were located in the perfect spot. AT&T cell service is 1-2 bars. Always had connection. Access to the New River Trail is at the end of the road, about a 10-minute walk. I walked east (did not bring my bike but will next time) about 6.5 miles and crossed two bridges and passed through Allisonia. Nice and flat. The surface of the trail is packed and would accommodate road tires, but I wouldn’t ride it with anything less than hybrids. I did have trouble finding a good map of the trail, so I posted one I picked up at
