Crooked Mountain is a family and Veteran-owned farm, campground, camp store, and small event venue located just ½ mile off the Blue Ridge Parkway at Mile Marker 159 near Floyd, Virginia.
We designed Crooked Mountain to be a unique basecamp for travelers exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains, especially those traveling by van, car, motorcycle, bicycle, or with small RVs. With easy access from the Parkway and scenic mountain roads nearby, it’s a great stop for road trippers, vanlifers, and anyone on two wheels exploring Southwest Virginia.
The campground currently offers 15 campsites across the farm:
• 7 sites on Pine Creek (Sites 1 & 12 have electric)
• 5 field campsites with open views of the surrounding hills
• 3 field sites with electric near the pond (Sites 13–15)
Electric sites provide 30/20 amp power only. There are no water or sewer hookups at campsites.
Guests can enjoy the natural setting of the property and access our hiking trail, fishing pond (catch n release for a fee) and other amenities on the farm while staying here.
Our camp store offers tourism information about Floyd and the surrounding area (including local motorcycle/bicycle maps and routes, along with artisan goods, camping essentials (things you may have forgotten), snacks, drinks, coffee, ice, firewood and more.
During the summer months we also open our fields for a You-Pick flower experience, where guests can purchase a container and create their own bouquet. Flower season typically runs July through September.
Crooked Mountain is located along The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail, and the town of Floyd is just 4 miles away, offering live music, local restaurants, breweries, galleries, and the famous Friday Night Jamboree at the Floyd Country Store.

Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space.
Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. Most of the buildings out front are artist studios (currently for 16 artists). We like to share the camp with others and watch it come back to life.
All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky.
We want to share our property with those who want to stay for more than one night, so we do not accept inquiries of single night stays. We also don't offer longterm rentals as we focus on short term camping.

This is a great spot for people looking for peace and quiet.
26 Minutes upriver of Claytor Lake State Park. There is a zoo in nearby Ft. Chiswell.
Each site has full hook ups. No tents are allowed due to lack of toilet facilities.
Area grocery stores are located about 30 minutes away in Wytheville, Pulaski and Hillsville.

Welcome to our small Farm, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Madison County, Virginia. Located just minutes from Shenandoah National Park, we offer intimate nature-inspired cottages and camping on our 120-acre working farm. Enjoy an evening under the stars with fireflies and a campfire after a long day hike, fly fishing on one of our beautiful trout steams or touring the local vineyards and breweries.
We currently offer one cottage, glamping and a few campsites for our guests. Our campsites are all private, located acres apart with tables, chairs, firepits, some elevated sleeping areas, some hammock spots and a few with a roof. Three of our spots require walking away from your vehicle, short distances. We have four drive-in sites that will accommodate two or three vehicles. We do not allow RVs or trailers on our main farm due to our narrow mountain driveway. Wisteria Camp has a private driveway, it can accommodate small RV/Trailers. Camper vans are welcome at the main farm!
Our farm store includes our Animal Welfare Approved products such as Eggs, Chicken, Beef, Pork, Lamb and Dairy, as well as produce, jams, coffee and other items from our local community. We offer camping essentials, local art, bike rentals, farm experiences and tours.
The property has miles of trails along mountain spring-fed streams, a small pond and access to three private acres on the Robinson River, a stocked Trout stream, just 2 miles down the road. Our property is centrally located to White Oak Canyon (20 minutes) and Old Rag Mountain (10 minutes) trailheads in the Shenandoah National Park as well as many vineyards and breweries.

As the source of the Falls, Sweet Springs Creek, serves as a long, unique home for trout, calcified travertine rock, chalybeate water, and ancient beaver dams (as well as active ones!). Beaverdam Falls is a rare place for the lack of stone and the centuries of beavers who have left their trace in & on our creek—and swamp, the Stick Marsh, which has an active beaver dam. Be careful! They do bite!

The creek winds through the center of this property! it is absolutely gorgeous! a 4 mile trail leads you to the other end of the property and back around. We are very close to quite a few farmers markets, wineries, breweries, and even a distillery in the valley. There is an awesome hike, 2 miles down the road known as Eagle rock with a sprawling view back towards the east, which is absolutely stunning.!! Fall asleep to hooting owls and the gentle ripple of the river and creek that flank your campsite. Wake up with a dip in the river or a morning hike in the woods. Feel the hug of the mountains throughout your stay, while also having access to Blacksburg nearby should you need it.
DIRECTIONS:
Upon entry the gravel road is shared with my neighbor and it is about 1.5 miles from the entry gate to the site. You'll enter thru a gate (it may be closed, if closed please close behind you as my neighbor sometimes has cows). Go approx 1 mile the road will split...go up the hill on the right. Continue past the Hay barn another half mile. Park on the left side of the gravel road along the tree line.
Another 50ft you'll see a wood foot bridge across the creek. The sites are ahead, PawPaw is first, then Bloodroot Base Camp (bell tent), and lastly Cohosh Cove is the most private. Each site has a sign as well
When driving, please be respectful of the right of way. Drive slowly and respect the farm equipment. Also please do not venture onto the neighbor’s property other than entry and exit.

20 minutes from Blacksburg and 35 minutes from Roanoke, our campground gives you great access to the “Triple Crown” of the Appalachian trail, consisting of McAfee Knob, Tinker Cliffs, and Dragon’s Tooth. Conquer these iconic peaks of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains for spectacular views of the surrounding wilderness. Additionally, explore Falls Ridge Nature preserve, Cascades waterfall, and Carvin’s Cove for hiking, kayaking and mountain biking.
Or just stay on the campground and enjoy the hiking and swimming we offer here.
Nearby in Blacksburg take advantage of the local breweries or Virginia Tech football home games. You can also find Christmas tree cutting in Floyd county, 45mins away.
This property deserves to be shared with others. It is peaceful and beautiful. As your Host, I am passionate about conservation and also teaching people about the medicinal uses of our local herbs. I can lead medicinal herb walks upon request for $25 a person.
I typically try to meet the campers if I can upon arrival, I am available for questions and can be hands on or off as the needs of campers suggest. I have had campers ask if I wanted to share a beverage and sit around the fire and have done so. I want to make your experience as enjoyable as possible.
I love the peacefulness the property offers, and that you’re in the middle of the wilderness but also have quick access to things in town. The river campsites are my favorite part of the property. At the main cabin I have goats and chickens which hipcampers are more than welcome to greet.
About the listing
Pitch your tents at the campsite nestled along the side of the mountain on the banks of the North Fork of the Roanoke River. As you fall asleep, listen to the occasional hoot of an owl, howl of a coyote, and gentle ripple of the river and creek that flank the campsite.

In addition to using this land as our camping/fishing get-a-way, it is also used for hay! Our 5th generation farm and home are just a few miles away, where we raise sheep, cattle, goats and chickens. Learn more about this land:Spend the night along the river in a 14 acre field. We have a picnic table, fire pit and grill in place! This site is easily accessible and along a road. The Appalachian Trail and Virginia Creeper Trail are a few miles away in Damascus, Va, where you can bike, hike, shop or eat. Just a 45 minute drive away is Grayson Highlands, where you can hike and see the wild ponies! Abingdon, VA is 20 minutes away. Hang out around a fire, fish (if you have your fishing license), or just relax by the river! We are excited to share our favorite camping spot. Mane Gait is conveniently located right off route 81 and can accommodate large rigs. You won't find better views of the blue ridge mountains on this gorgeous working horse farm. We have hiking trails through beautiful private scenery for beginners to advanced hikers. Pets are welcome if leashed! Picnic area on site as well as laundry machine. We are 10 minutes from downtown historic Lexington Virginia that provides great restaurants and lots of history in the charming town of Lexington. Site 2 should be booked for smaller campers around 25 feet. Site 1 is better for larger campers. Bathroom is located through the barn just past the white gazebo, first door on the right.

Our experience from the start was absolutely excellent, and it only got better throughout!
My fiance and I had a magical time. Fran was extremely helpful, very responsive, and recommended the perfect site. The grounds were incredible, so much fun detail, so serene but real and raw feeling. Finley who checked us in was so nice and informative, and Buddy the giant golden retriever was the most incredible host and guardian, walking us up to our site, sleeping outside our tent at night, and showing us around the grounds. He also is one of if not the best groomed outdoor dog (especially long haired) I've ever seen.
The outdoor live amphitheater is spectacular, and we were lucky enough to happen to be around for Mondo Jellyfish King's practice session, and what a treat, these guys know how to rock! The facilities were adorable and well kept, everything you need and more. The turkeys and ducks and rooster and ponds and trails, just endless wonder. You feel the magic from the second you turn in.
Every soul we encountered was so uplifting and welcoming, and you can see and feel the love everywhere you go. When they call this place a sanctuary, they are not messing around. We had so much fun, got exactly the weekend we needed after a very hard couple months. I could not have imagined a more perfect experience!!

We loved camping at Gallywinter. It was a pleasure to meet Gail and explore the magical place she has created...quiet, serene with access to firewood, the loveliest outhouse I've ever seen, outdoor shower, soaking tub and sauna. Her studio and small local craft/art gallery was an unexpected bonus. Spacious campsites and so many other options for overnight lodging too. We'll be back to experience a retreat in the future.

Great little private spot in the middle of nature! Directions on how to find the Hipcamp were clear and concise. We enjoyed the sweet little trail through the woods to see the beautiful farmland and mountains. It was great to experience the footbridge as well!

Could not have asked for a better spot to pitch a tent! Literally right beside the river. Nice shade trees and big grassy field! Tons of privacy and quiet. Except for the tons of nature! Close to the Grayson Highlands, one of my favorite places! Definitely going back!

Second trip, won't be the last. All the sites are awesome, we've camped at two different sites, but really I wouldn't be disappointed with any of them. The bathroom is very clean and the host is very accommodating and responsive. Really, Adam is nothing but 5 ⭐'s as far as we concerned. 🙏 For all the help Adam!!

We loved our stay here. Frog siren at night, fireflies dancing in the field, little spot by the river. River is muddy enough where swimming may be out of the picture, but we saw huge carp! Really relaxing spot that has at least some shade at all hours of the day.

This was such a magical hipcamp. Our dog enjoyed the open meadow and maple tree site. The hundreds of lightning bugs that come out at night were so magical! It was unreal. Super close to a creek which was amazing to fall asleep to and it’s very close to the swimming hole. The other sites were far enough away we had plenty of privacy. The port-a-potty has a chunk of the top of door missing, but it was actually amazing. You had a view and it didn’t get so hot in there. I vote to keep it this way haha. It was super close to the McAfee knob and dragons tooth parking lots. I would stay here again and again. Highly recommend.

My two boys and I stayed in the canvas tent overlooking the river and really enjoyed ourselves. It was great to have a mattress in the tent along with camping chairs and firewood. It made our experience more enjoyable not having to pack as much. The directions to get to the site were easy to follow and David was great at communicating. When I come back, I may consider renting the other two camp sites as well just to secure our privacy since they are in fairly close proximity of each other. We didn’t have anyone else staying in the other two sites when we stayed so it wasn’t an issue but I’m just thinking ahead. Overall, we had a great experience and will definitely be back.

This HipCamp is exceptional. Wide open space to find your place. Electricity at the end of the stalls on the hill with water available. Directions lead you to where you need to go so you don’t have to find someone to ask. They leave you alone but Sydney always answers your text if you have a question. The view is awesome of the mountains with paddocks of. 2 horses each. Lots of paddocks! The sound of whining and horses moving around made me feel in heaven. Oh … the horses are friendly and will come over to side so you can pet them. That’s a bonus! They are very photogenic too.
