Sharp's Island is so named because the Sharp family of Richmond owned it as far back as the 1850s. The old brick foundation you see in the pictures is all that remains of a house that was built on the island in 1895 and stood for 75 years! We consider ourselves stewards of an amazing historic, ecological, geologic, and recreational asset, and we would love to have you add your story to this island's long history!

One-of-a-kind really only begins to describe 1-acre Sharp's Island! For starters, this is the only legal camping option in the city of Richmond. You read that correctly. This is your own private island, and it's right in the heart of downtown RVA! The Piedmont meets the Coastal Plain right here at Sharp's Island. That makes for amazing fishing, especially during the spring shad and striper runs.
Some other incredible things about camping at Sharp's Island: You can motor up to it from Ancarrow's Landing, canoe over from the trail just below Mayo Bridge, or make this the destination for your downriver raft/kayak trip; at summer river levels there are oodles of great swimming holes along the banks; fire pit ready and waiting for you. I live on the land where there is 3 acers and some woods to burn fire also a nice big swimming pool and goats and chickens to pet and feed.
A small, shed cottage turned into a room with a full-sized bed and mini fridge with a microwave, toaster, and coffee machine, a table with chairs to eat at. Ac for the summer and a heater for the cooler days. I am still adding on and bringing new things to the cottage. I will have complimentary drinks and snacks on your arrival.
Portions of the historic Three Chopt Trail, a Native American trail, run through a large portion of the county. The trail was marked by three hatchet chops in trees to show the way. The modern-day U.S. Route 250 roughly follows this route from Richmond to Charlottesville.

Visit my YouTube channel @1perspective123 to see my overnight stay at “THE SHED” on Camp Redfish.
I had the whole property to myself on the holiday weekend. Very quiet. Nice little shed tucked up against the woods. I stayed hunkered down most of my trip. It was raining/snowing, very peaceful. There are two picnic tables on site, plus a fire pit. The shed features an awning over its porch with two Adirondack chairs for your convenience. The site overlooks the field.
I used a Mr buddy heater inside the shed for the night. I really got some warmth going.
I recommend this site to anyone looking for some true SOLITUDE!

We absolutely loved our stay at this Hipcamp spot last week! It was the perfect retreat—so cute and cozy, and truly had all the amenities a weary traveler could possibly need.
I was especially impressed by how conscientious and thoughtful the host was throughout our stay. For instance, the space was efficiently designed with plenty of hooks for hanging items, which is essential in a small space. We were also very grateful that she provided snacks and small bites to eat after our long drive, and she was incredibly communicative and fast at responding to any questions we had.
As a pet owner, I was also appreciative that the space was pet-friendly, allowing my dog, Biscuit, to join us on the trip. I sincerely hope to stay again sometime soon, perhaps when the weather is a bit nicer! Highly recommend this wonderful spot.

Weekend Trip to Hawthorn Hollar
A wonderful little slice of heaven, with amazing hosts! We had the best stay in the little cabin, which had everything one might want for a nature-filled and quiet weekend getaway! Julie made sure we had everything we needed, but also left us to enjoy everything the site had to offer! 10/10, would highly recommend!

Absolutely loved our time with Moon and Julie they were such amazing hosts. The place is perfect for what we wanted - to escape and switch off. Our daughters loved running free, playing with the dogs and catching fish. We wish we could have stayed longer and will definitely be back.

We had an amazing time camping in the Enchanted Hidden Cabin! The view was absolutely fantastic, and the cabin itself was perfectly clean. Moon and Julie are such wonderful hosts. So pleasant, kind, and clear with all their instructions. My dog had the best time running around the large field and playing happily with their lovely dogs named Ava and Ruby. My whole family had a fantastic experience. The Gnome Trail was just the cutest! We’re already sure we’ll be coming back!

Lovely quiet spot. The AC in the sugarshack was a lifesaver. Loved the little walking trail and all the little amenities. The host was super nice and helpful as well. Definitely will be visiting again.

We loved the little cabin!! It has a nice fire pit and big area outside for kids and dogs to play! The pond was a perfect addition. The hosts were SO nice! It was my birthday and she even gave me a small gift! We loved our stay and will be back!

4 nights at Solitude at Thornton Farm
First, the hosts were so warm and welcoming. The place is adorable with everything we needed to have a comfortable and quiet long weekend. Melvin even helped is get the grill rolling, and showed my husband how to roast peanuts. He sent a box home with is from his farm so we can try it ourselves. Really could not have asked for a better experience.

Had a wonderful weekend with the family and dogs here. There were plenty of trails to walk (the gnome trail was a highlight) that are well-maintained. The pond on site was perfect for easy fishing with an option to take out the canoe. And Moon and Julie were both such friendly and generous hosts! The cabin is placed on a spacious plot of land away from the other two sites, with plenty of shade. The futon was surprisingly comfortable. Lots of open fields too. In short, it was the perfect getaway.

The rental space and land were both beautiful. We couldn’t see another house from the rental - it looked out onto trees, a field, and well maintained grassy space that we and our dog enjoyed! The house was perfect for our group and the hosts very responsive. We would 100% stay again!

The campsite at Sarah’s farm is a sanctuary in Virginia. Not only is it a perfect setup for a scenic getaway, the hospitality that Sarah provided made the trip so pleasant and memorable.

Pocahontas State Park Campground
My husband and I love staying at State Parks whenever we can so our overnight at Pocahontas State Park was just the thing for us as we traveled north from Florida with our new camper. The Hipcampwebsite is easy to use to to book your site.
When we arrived, we found that our camper would not fit very well on the campsite that we chose. This campground is hilly and has a lot of sites that are not level. We contacted the office and they were very willing to accommodate us although I’m sure in the busy season this probably would not have been as easy to do. We were visiting in late March.A quick drive around the campground helped us to find a site that would fit our camper easily. There are several pull through sites to choose from, too.
The campground was very quiet and extremely affordable. We were delighted with how remote it seemed while at the same time very close (within a 10 minute drive) to an area that had everything you would need from grocery stores to restaurants.
All all I really nice place to stay.
