About the property
Located on a 66-acre plot just five miles from the Shenandoah River, our property offers amazing access to hiking and the outdoors while also keeping civilization within striking distance. Bear Chase Brewery is just a half mile walk across the street, and we are 15 miles from Purcellville.
The land and lodge used to be the summer home of a trained opera singer, whose singing could be heard throughout the mountain.
Your Host lives onsite in the stone house that also acts as a hostel for hikers on the Appalachian Trail. Built in the 1930's all from locally sourced hand-hammered stone, the house is open every night from 5pm - 9pm.
Note that we offer several campsites relatively close to each other, so you should expect to see and hear other campers on the property during your stay.
About the listing
Pitch your tent in a forested area just a short walk up from where you’ll park your car. Enjoy unbeatable proximity to hiking and panoramic views while still having basic amenities that ensure a comfortable stay.
You’ll have access to a composting pit toilet, and can access potable water from the tap in the lodge. That’s also where you can access hot showers. As noted above, we host Appalachian Trail thru hikers on the property, so you may see them hanging around or sleeping in the bunkhouse near the shared facilities. so please be respectful of hours when you come in for a shower.
No showers after 10 pm
For meals, we have picnic tables, and you are encouraged to cook over the fire pits that accompany each site. Please practice Leave No Trace practices during your stay, as the property has raccoons and other critters who will be drawn to any food scraps that are left behind.
Pets are allowed! Please keep them on leash during your stay.
Trash can be disposed of in dumpster up the hill

- What do we mean by "RUSTIC" ?
The camping experience we offer is about unplugging from the modern world , getting back to basics, slowing down and re-connecting with the land. Simply put, this is CAMPING .... not glamping. (Our Cosmic Cottage is also rustic, despite the amenities that come with it).
- CAMPSITES and TREEHOUSE - No electricity or wifi on the land. Campsites and TREEHOUSE are nestled in the woods. So although your vehicle will be parked within 50 ft or so from site, you cannot pull directly up to the site and get any closer because of the trees.
- SHOWER and PORTA POTTY - roughly a 5 minute or less walk from sites to shower and / or porta potty. Shower hours are 8 am- to 8 pm. The shower has hot and cold running water . You can drive to the shower if you need to.
- RESPONSE TIME - This is a working herb farm/ sanctuary and we so do not always have our phones on us. We will make every effort to respond to you within a few hours. Please be patient and you will receive a response.

Fly fisherman will quietly walk the banks and creek as they fish, and campers are requested to allow a fly fisherman to pass through without disturbance as they quietly move through your site to fish beautiful Cedar Creek. Watching them fish, catch and release beautiful rainbow and brook trout can be a relaxing, enjoyable experience.
The oral history of Coal Mine Hollow has it that a moonshine still once graced the banks of Camp Cedar Creek. It was run by a recluse, who was always on the move from the Revenuers. A revenuer went missing along Cedar Creek one moonlit night, never to be seen again.
The bearded recluse who ran the still, owned two mules, and an old car frame without a motor. Those mules would pull him through the hollow, and up into the mountains, where the revenuers never found him. Some say on a cold, moonlit night, they’ve seen his two old mules, pulling an old car frame past Camp Cedar Creek.

Camp is wooded acreage centrally located between Massanutten Resort and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Currently very, very basic with improvements happening weekly. Currently 2WD is okay and some clearance preferred like Outback sized vehicles over all. A van can fit in site #3 (The Vanner) but will take a multi point turns to come and go. Country vibe but NOT remote. Close to restaurants, and outdoor activities near by making it a great BASE for activities such as mountain biking, road biking, hiking, skiing/boarding, and the floating/fishing on the South Fork of the Shenandoah River. A safe / legal place to park for the night. There is a hwy nearby so there is some noise from that but it doesn’t seem to bother most. Sites are priced for the amenities they have or don’t and due to location.
SUP and Kayaks available free to campers upon request most weekends April 15 to Oct 15 (Campers must be able to transport)

Camper vans are welcome at the main farm!
Our farm store includes our Animal Welfare Approved products such as Eggs, Chicken, Beef, Pork, Lamb and Dairy, as well as produce, jams, coffee and other items from our local community. We offer camping essentials, local art, bike rentals, farm experiences and tours.
The property has miles of trails along mountain spring-fed streams, a small pond and access to three private acres on the Robinson River, a stocked Trout stream, just 2 miles down the road. Our property is centrally located to White Oak Canyon (20 minutes) and Old Rag Mountain (10 minutes) trailheads in the Shenandoah National Park as well as many vineyards and breweries.

A slice of paradise tucked into the hills of the valley and nestled up against the Shenandoah river with private access.
Neighboring Muse vineyards, the state park and a 3 min drive to town. It's the perfect getaway and also an excellent hub to loads of fun nearby. If you're interested in renting it out privately and throwing a weekend fiesta, let me know. It's perfect for that. Or if you just prefer the sound and serenity of nature, also perfect.
Late August to mid September is when the PawPaw's are ripe and readily falling from the trees, booking during these times grants you access to the one of nature's best kept secrets, the Paw Paw fruit. You won't find them in stores but you can graze for them here. They make a delicious second breakfast

one look at the Sugar Maple tree in full bloom and we knew this was it.
Now we want to share this gem with you! We love to greet our camper guests on arrival, and then we always respect privacy during the trip so you can recharge and enjoy the land.

fly fishing, or take a dip into the cool, spring-fed pond on a warm day! We are just a few miles from Etlan, VA if you want to head into town or need some necessities.

We have 7+ very private acres along the North Fork of the Shenandoah River, which has been in our family for over 50 years and where we currently live.
You will arrive at our house, and the campsite is approximately 150 yds down the river trail. The campsite is completely private from our house.
We are native plant enthusiasts and are fortunate to have many native species of trees and plants on our property. There’s great fishing, hiking, kayaking and canoeing from the property and also plenty more nearby.
We’re only a few miles outside of Strasburg which offers great antique shops, dining, and a brewery with live music on weekends.
Five night maximum permitted. We prefer that guests arrive before dark.
**Note that the North Fork is a shallow river with a slate bottom. If you plan to wade, fish or swim in the river, you may want to bring some sturdy shoes to wear in the river.

I grew up camping here at Bear’s Den, but this was my first time returning as an adult. The campground remains one of the gems of the Northern VA area. Site 5 was nice and close to the privy, which was convenient. The Bear’s Den overlook is a short 15 minute walk from the site. A beautiful spot and I will definitely be returning!

This spot along the river was perfect for our group of 10. The site was well-positioned, close to the river and bathhouse, and while it wasn't as secluded as some of the other sites on the property, it still offered plenty of privacy. I noticed the listing mentions space for up to 20 people, but our group found it a bit tight with 7 tents and kitchen setups, so you may want to keep that in mind when planning. The host was very attentive throughout our stay. The bathrooms could use some updating, and the shower was quite small. The utility sink outside was great for washing dishes. There were a lot of bugs around, though none were biting. Overall, I would highly recommend this spot.

I’m so happy I found this place! The tent was clean and very comfortable, and the private composting toilet was a huge plus. This was the perfect place to disconnect and enjoy the scenery. Also near some awesome, pet-friendly local breweries- specifically Bald Top and Blue Quartz. Host was super friendly and accommodating, but also gave us our privacy. Highly recommend!

We rented all 5 sites for an evening of camping with a bunch of 3-year-olds and it was absolutely perfect. Great tree coverage, a short walk from the parking, and enough room for everyone to spread out. Sites are close together so I’m glad we had the place to ourselves and didn’t have to worry so much about disrupting neighbors. We had a great experience and loved being close to the brewery for hanging out prior to setting up camp. Thanks for the space and opportunity to introduce camping to our little wilderness explorers.

Glamping here was incredible! We picked one of the yurts to stay in for our last few days in Virginia and it was delightful. Very clean and professionally kept. We had the pleasure of running into Sean as well and he was a fantastic host. Lots of great hikes nearby as well! Overall, would highly recommend.

Site 4 was awesome! Spent 3 nights with my partner and our dog. Direct access to the river right off the campsite was great and on our third night the stars came out and we got an amazing view of the night sky. Even saw a shooting star. Had neighbors two of the nights but barely heard or saw them at all. Highly recommend Grahams place to anyone. He was very friendly and helpful with dropping off firewood and answering questions we had. Definitely coming back with the family next time.

Good location. Convenient. Great tree coverage. Surprisingly quiet condition close to the highway it is. Site #5 had bit more of a slope than I’m used to, but I’m rather picky. Still a lovely place to camp. Do recommend.

We tent camped at site #1 which was a lovely wooded spot with a large flat dirt area that had a fire ring and a 15 foot dirt trail to another smaller flat spot where we pitched our tent. We could see our car from the site and there was a spot a pot within walking distance as well as a colorful rustic compostable clean outhouse. The outdoor shower was rustic with hot and cold water and was so refreshing. There was biodegradable soap available although we brought our own. The community pavilion with hammock and swing and picnic tables was a great place to watch the sunset through the woods. The meditation trails were well marked and har positive signs like “choose love” and “unplug”. My favorite was the trail to the Big Mother Tree. So peaceful to sit on a rock and just be still. The trails still had some higher grass and over growth but it’s a nature sanctuary. Just be aware of ticks although I didn’t find any that I was aware of. We had several thunderstorms throughout the night but we still felt safe and were able to put a tarp over our tent. You can hear the train in the distance several times throughout the night but if I would have brought ear plugs, I probably wouldn’t have noticed it. We brought our own camp table as site #1 and #2 has no table. We were able to drive about 4 miles into Shepherdstown to eat and wait out the storm. Next day we packed up and drove about 3-4 miles to the C & O canal to bike. Sacred Roots is a peaceful place. We would return :)
