I sleep a lot on the day bed in the living room so the Sawmill can be comfortably rented for up to 4 guests. The outhouse is a thing of the past, just recently I installed a compositing toilet besides the bedroom.We also offer The Summit which is a high elevation, 2-story cabin surrounded by national forest which has evolved into an off-grid living and play space located at nearly 3300 feet elevation on a 1/2 acre flat with an incredible view. There are very private old forest service trails leading directly into the Pisgah National Forest.

We are located only 10/15 minutes from all of the exciting things Asheville has to offer and just as close to the charming small town of Black Mountain!
The cabin at wild ridge is OFF GRID (meaning no power or running water) but I promise, with our solar panels and rain collection system you won't miss being ON the grid at all! The cabin and the drive (or hike) up was designed for the adventurous at heart! So, drive on up if you have 4WD or AWD and if you don't, no worries! Just park in the designated space, grab your gear and hike on up! (The hike in is steep... about 300 ft but takes less than 5 minutes) We have a cooler up there for any perishables you may have, just bring ice :)
Please note: We have to close the outdoor heated shower during the cold winter months, however we provide an all season 5 gallon solar shower bag to use during this time. We also have a list at the cabin of other places nearby that provide hot showers in the winter months for a small fee.
In the rare event that heavy snow is expected, we will have to close the road leading up to the cabin because of its steepness. If this occurs, you will be given a full refund for the cancellation.
To heat the cabin, there is a un-vented wall mounted heater that heats the space really well! Since the cabin is insulated, the heater works quick to heat the small area up so you will stay nice and cozy!

James landed on the property in 2009, built a small dairy barn and milked 3 cows for a couple years before building the two cabins. In 2015 he was joined by Sofi, originally from Sweden and together they have three daughters.
Together they manage a botanically interesting hobby hill farm and are happy to host travelers and seekers in their cabins. Hilltop was a joint project that James built in 2012 with a talented woodworker and friend in 6 months. We have maintained the original vibe of the place, rustic simplicity and elegance a notch or two above glamping, well-described by the zen koan, "chop wood, carry water" Orchard House was built entirely by James from the block up to the roof, averaging 1 hour/day for 3 years or 1,000 hours.
Some of the Hilltop photos are a bit dated, we have a more private outhouse behind the cabin, and have made a few improvements here and there. Reach out anytime for any reason. We love hosting and nearly everyone enjoys their stay.

When you go to sleep, there's no light except the moon and stars, no refrigerator or central heating or air conditioning noise -- only the sounds of nature -- the stream, crickets or frogs in the nearby pond, dogs or coyotes in the distance. Without the glow of a nearby city, the hot tub on a clear night, the skies are dazzling.
Speaking of which, the wood-fired hot tub is made by a company called Snorkel. It's perfect for 2 and can fit 3, although tight. It's Japanese style hot tub bathing, meaning no chemicals. Also, since we're not grid tied, it relies on a firebox heating fresh spring water, which you fill it with. It takes approx. 35 minutes to fill the tub and between 3 and 3.5 hours to heat (longer when it's really cold!). There's a thermometer in it, so as it gets closer to your liking (don't let it get over 102 degrees), let the existing logs burn down, choke off the air vent sleeve and hop in. With no pump sounds and the stars above, it's incomparable. The $50 fee (per 2 night rentals) covers thorough cleaning between guests and split firewood.
You will be very comfortable in Little Good Egg, even in extreme weather, simply by paying attention and taking more time for simple tasks. It sounds corny, but there is a meditative quality to thinking and doing things like heating water, keeping warm, staying hydrated, eating well and choosing to do what you really want. I'm always amazed how busy I am -- and how different this kind of busy feels -- without electronics and my technological "time savers." Odd as it sounds to say this, it's stunning and wonderful to go "offline," even for just a day, and not get hit by little chirps and incoming messages that seem to arrive now 24/7.
Note: Since we opened in October, 2014, guest reviews consistently tell us us best thing about staying at Good Egg is being off the grid and the treadmill of modern life, unplugging from the dominant culture and experiencing oneself as humans did 100 years ago and more.

Our Trailhead is located 45 minutes west of Asheville, NC and our hike-in trail is 2 miles long with 1,250 feet of elevation gain. The hike-in trail utilizes an old forest service road which follows a creek providing verdant landscapes and soothing sounds as you make your way up the mountain to our cabins and campsites.
We have two antique Appalachian cabins on-site and two campsites available. Our cabins and campsites are priced per person and can be reserved individually or collectively through an entire property buyout. A hearty and healthy breakfast is served each morning in our Main Lodge and is included and you'll never pay a cleaning fee on this mountain because we believe in Southern hospitality!
Our Main Lodge (Cabin #1) has a huge front porch with spectacular views, a nicely appointed off-grid kitchen, full bathroom with hot shower and an upstairs loft that sleeps up to 10. Our on-site host/s stay downstairs in the Main Lodge in private bedrooms so they can keep the home fires burning, tend the garden, cook breakfasts, clean the cabins and ensure all your needs are taken care of during your stay.
Guests in our Upper Cabin (Cabin #2) enjoy a wooded and secluded setting in a rustic cabin that sleeps up to 6. The downstairs area features an open floorpan with a queen size bed, off-grid kitchen, dining area and the loft upstairs sleeps up to 4 people. Cabin #2 also features a full bathroom with and a tree-house like view from the front porch!
Our cabin adjacent camp space features two spectacular campsites and is located 100’ from our Main Lodge. Both campsites sit beside our neighboring property owned by the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy and feature a long-range mountain views. I loved this place! It's exactly as described. Quiet and a perfect weekend getaway. Just be careful pulling into the parking spot near the cabin.. There's a tree in the middle. Otherwise.. Super easy to navigate if you have the AWD/4WD. Would absolutely stay here again and would recommend :)

This was a spur of the moment stay and turned out good. It is a little difficult without running water to the cabin with kids (there is a bath house with restrooms within walking distance). The cabin itself was beautiful, we stayed in number 1. There are 4 of them very close by, so if you are seeking privacy it won't be here. Across the cabin is a fenced in area for the farm animals. We did not check that out due to timing of other plans, but is probably cool for the kids. We were able to have a campfire which was really nice to have. All in all, if you are just needing a spot to sleep id recommend it, not so much for hanging out, especially with younger kids. I have a 10 and 4 year old.
The drive way is paved most of the way, lots of twists and turns. We arrived after sundown so it was a little challenging finding but nothing crazy.

This little cabin was so perfect for us! The bedroom was so cozy and the place was very warm and inviting. Finding it was very easy.
It is about a 50 minute drive to Asheville from it.
It’s right in the middle of wonderful views, beautiful drives and other places to visit.
Highly recommended for a romantic getaway with simple needs and lots of rest needed as it was quiet. Love love love!

Hans' Summit Cabin was amazing! The cabin is fully equipped with propane heat, non-potable running water (from rain), and all the basic amenities. As regular campers/backpackers, we found it very comfortable. We loved exploring the trail leading into Pisgah National Forest and using Hans' bow and arrow for some target practice.
It was a short but steep hike up to the cabin, but it added to the 'off-grid' experience in my opinion. Hans was kind enough to transport our belongings in his ATV.
It was fun chatting with Hans about the area and his property. Hope to visit again!

The Artist Studio was the perfect spot to stay on a solo road trip from Eastern Virginia to Nashville. The property was stunning and the studio was clean & cozy. Outstanding location 10 min from downtown Johnson City. The host, Pat, left delicious baked goods in the fridge of the studio. My highlight of the stay was enjoying a fresh baked good & coffee in the sun room overlooking the pond. Highly recommend!

We had such a great time visiting the summit cabin, and it was equipped with everything you would typically need on a camping trip! Hans was very nice and brought all of our things to the cabin, and we hiked the steep but beautiful trail up to the summit. We brought our two dogs that absolutely loved running around the property, and we even explored the trails in the woods behind the cabin and they were endless. We went on a chilly weekend, and were so surprised at how warm the gas units inside got to warm up the cabin! Such a beautiful cabin, and we cannot wait to come back again.

We loved staying at the sight. Enjoyed the privacy and the view, and the hot tub. This was in spite of Mother Nature giving us rain for 3 days. Weekend Trip to The Cabin At Wild Ridge Trail
Our parents stayed at the cabin over a fall weekend in late October and it was perfect! We had a campfire, an outing to Asheville and a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and spent a rainy day cozied up in the cabin playing card games and chatting. You are immersed in the trees at the cabin and they have done such a wonderful job of making every part feel well thought out and cared for. The toilet and shower felt cozy, even outside! Deserae responded to all my messages promptly and communicated well! Our parents, visiting from Ireland, said it was one of our best vacation spots and they had such a refreshing time.

Weekend Trip to Mountain Top Cabins on Private Land
Stayed in Cabin 2 for a night, the hike up was definitely worth it! I would definitely recommend packing light and bringing a sleeping bag and good headlight/flashlight. Doug, the caretaker was soo welcoming and accommodating. For anyone following the coordinates that are sent to you with the directions I would just follow the Google directions under the name of the cabins. The coordinates took me to a private driveway in Google maps. Definitely recommend this place for a nice unplugged time.

This was such a cool cabin. Waking up to the trees right outside the big garage door was amazing. The swing was such a highlight! We had a perfect vacation here.
Warning though, pack light unless you have a 4w drive vehicle that can make it up the trail (we didn't). The hike up to the cabin is a strenuous if you have a lot of things to carry.

Ravens Ridge was a beautiful getaway. With rustic charms and spectacular views.... Even from bed!
Cantral to places to explore. Went to Bryson City for the train ride through the mountains. Gatlinburg is so close as well to find fun to get into.
Definitely be prepared for the walk up to the cabin but it was a beautiful and well needed retreat.

Loved our stay in cabin 2! The hike in is challenging, but worth it. Doug is a friendly and helpful care keeper. He had the stove in the cabin going upon arrival, provided us extra wood, and made hearty and delicious breakfasts. Views were fantastic. Loved spending time with Lucy the cat. Will definitely return.

This camping area has been closed for years. You can walk in, but it's gated off and overgrown. Not maintained by the state or anyone anymore.

Not 13 not 12 but only 10 sites. Horse trails are rough. Several trails for hiking biking. No water at campground. Very small creek near. Vault toilet. Quite campground. Rangers come by regularly.

Just got back from an amazing camping trip at Lake Powhatan. We had 2 tents and a couple of hammocks. Site #50 was PERFECT for us. It was close to fill water jugs and a short walk to the bathroom/shower area. Hiking and Mountain Bike trails were right at the site. We went on a few 5k hikes, but if you are a biker, THIS is the place for you. The campground was super clean and had firewood for purchase (cash only). Grocery was less than 10 minutes, and downtown Asheville was just a bit more up the road. Cell service was non existent, but we weren't there to be on our phones. Highly Recommend!!

Online reservations move fast. I am not sure how fast their drive up spots move but this is a popular spot. Car camping is allowed. Great facilities. Feels like the glamping of camping. Love this place.

Yes the hiking is great, yes the views are spectacular, but the one thing I will recommend (at risk of losing my favorite spot) camp at the top of watchman's view. It won't disappoint with the sunrise views.

Great spot for camping and fishing. Nice picnic shelter. Creek runs beside camping spots. Small waterfall down the trail at the back of the campground. Across the road is a great beach area for kids to play and swim.

Off the beaten path. The campground is perfect for someone who likes true camping. There is a little road noise, but there is also noise from the big rushing creek. The trails are well maintained. The sites are spacious and well layed out. Great river rock walls and steps. A lot of work went into creating this campground. The bathhouse is clean. The creek/river, the hiking trail, the overlook is fantastic. A portion of the campground is closed due to budget cuts, but the beauty of this small campground is well worth the trip. We stayed here as a last minute thing and we're very pleasantly surprised! The rate is more than reasonable for what it is. The sites aren't right on top of each other, the stonework dividing them is in good shape, the bathrooms were reasonably bug free and everything worked, the area was marvelously clean! The on site hike was stunning as well. And lastly, I'd highly recommend the diner down the road for breakfast. Great experience, will hopefully be back!

We just spent Memorial Day weekend at Rocky Bluff Campground. We had a group of 22 people and the camp host was wonderful in helping us to get together, even lending his outdoor carpet for a muddy site so everyone could be together! It's a wonderful place for children to ride their bikes, play in beautiful spring creek, and hike the spring creek trail. We also visited the stunning Max Patch while we were there and enjoyed nearby Hot Springs Spa and the Paint Creek Recreational area. With so much to do both within and near the campground, it's a favorite for us handsdown! The campground has a park like feel, beautiful stone work, and a quiet charm you can't find most places. I highly recommend it!

Recently completed the 23 mile Linville Gorge Loop at the end of February. It was pretty challenging & took us just under 48 hours to complete. The Loop gives you great views of the Gorge from the top and down inside of it. Finding the trail on day two made things interesting toward the second half of the 13-14 mile day. Amazing camp sites all over. Love the Linville Gorge Wilderness. If you do the loop, be prepared to work more than play or give yourself 3-4 days.

This is one of our favorite local spots. Nice camping spot, quiet and heavily wooded with clean bathhouses. Good hiking and nice little lake for swimming but the beach is a flipping mess w/ Canadian goose poop everywhere. Yuck!

We just stayed here for a few nights and loved it. All area camp sites were booked for the weekend we got lucky they had a cancellation and Robert held it for us until we could drive there. The managers and camp host were so great and friendly we will definitely camp here again. They were constantly driving around keeping a eye on everything and camp host would deliver wood when needed it. Bathrooms and showers were kept very clean. It is nice and tucked in the woods so let your family know you'll be off the grid cause there is absolutely no cell reception.

Just got back from our camping trip at Lake Powhatan Campground. We had a great time the site was beautiful. The staff were very friendly and helpful and they keep the place nice and tidy. The bathrooms and showers were kept impeccably clean. The lake is nice great place for a relaxing picnic.
