Plumtree Campground and Retreat is an off-the-beaten-path property for hikers, bikers (both pedal and motor), campers, adventurers, parkway goers, mountain lovers, fisherman, and skiers/snowboarders. The property is the former Blind Squirrel Campground which included a zip line recreation area. Relics remain, with zip lines and bridges still running through the tree canopy and an old climbing wall. These aren’t currently in use, and cannot be explored, but they add a wonderland-like quality to the land. Other features also remain that can be used: a sliding rock waterfall which is a short hike within the campground property, moderate trails for hiking, and mountain biking running from the waterfall through the back of the property (these trails are mountainous, so please enter at your own risk), fruit trees, blueberry bushes, small trout pond, a playground, an open meadow for star gazing, and our friendly neighborhood duck, Howard. (He hangs by the pond and accepts treats!) You are welcome to explore all these features, but please be mindful and respectful of residents and guests, do not enter or explore the greenhouses or gardens, and remain aware that this is mountainous terrain with inherent risks. This is a rustic property in the forest, centrally located to all the area has to offer. Privately run, we offer a variety of lodging options: - Seasonal and daily camping with full hook up RV sites - Popup sites, tent sites with water and electric - Group tent site with pavilion - Primitive tent sites - Primitive cabins (no electricity/water) - Lodge with four bedrooms/bath - Cabin with a two-bedroom/bath among the trees - Cabin with a one-bedroom/bath pond side - Studio apartments. Four available. Includes one bedroom/bath Campsites include a fire pit, picnic table, and electric/water/sewer depending on the site. There are 5 tent sites boasting elevated tent platforms nestled against the mountain. Sites are generally mossy, treed (think hammocks!), and have gravel parking. There are 3 his and her bathhouses on the property with the largest within walking distance of the tent loop, with 2 toilets and 3 stall showers each. This corner of the world has so much to offer and we are close, but just far away enough from it all. The scenic drives alone are worth venturing out: - Blue Ridge Parkway - Linville Falls - Linville Caverns - Grandfather Mountain - Beech Mt Ski Slope/Rec area - Jonas Ridge Snow Tubing Park - Sugar Mt Ski Slope/Rec area - Roan Mt State Park - Appalachian Trail - Yellow Mountain Gap Trail Head - North Toe River - Banner Elk - Little Switzerland - Mayland Dark Sky Observatory - Brown Mountain OHV Trail System All these adventures within a 20-40-minute drive. Boone is only 50 minutes away, and Asheville 1 hr. 20 minutes. Off HWY 19-E is Spears Country Store, about 5 minutes from here, where you can get basic supplies, propane, and gas. We can also provide firewood for a fee. Ingles grocery stores in both Newland and Spruce Pine are just 20 minutes away. In Spruce Pine you will also find a Walmart, historic downtown with many shops and restaurants. Be aware cell service can be spotty in the area depending on your carrier. WIFI is offered, but not guaranteed due to the mountainous terrain. The group tent area, located at the top of our tent loop includes exclusive use of the pavilion, a large fire pit area, and spots for 3-4 medium to large tents and several spots for smaller tents. There is a park-style grill, water hydrant, and power in the pavilion. Situated adjacent to the creek, you can easily hear from this wonderful, shady site!

I-3 is a beautiful creek side site overlooking Issacs Branch. This site is the closest to the bathhouse of the I-sites. It is very private and had a nice path to the creek. Primitive site with no water or electric. Tent platform is approximately 16' round

This primitive cabin is a great alternative to tent camping. You have a solid roof over your head, a great covered porch and a nearby bathroom with a full walk-in shower. The cabin does have an electrical cord running to it for phone charging and other low electrical drawing devices. It is equipped with a queen air bed cot. The walls have been insulated and encapsulated in plastic. The ceiling has not been insulated.

This wonderful cabin was finished with materials from our old chicken coop. Sit back and take in the wonderful views from the porch. The cabin is equipped with a window unit air conditions, portable electric heater, ceiling fan and electrical outlets. Just bring an air mattress, cot or sleeping bag and you are good to go! 4x4 or AWD recommended for the cabin parking spot. Other parking is available for 2WD vehicles

Hilltop Cabin Hilltop Cabin is located in the community of Plumtree, North Carolina in Avery County. At an elevation of 2,867 feet, Plumtree is in the Blue Ridge Mountains convenient to Newland, Spruce Pine, Banner Elk, Newland, Little Switzerland, Beech Mountain, Sugar Mountain and Grandfather Mountain. This area's beautiful and magical scenery can be explored by driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway, hiking the Appalachian Trail, exploring Linville Falls, trekking Yellow Mountain, fishing on the Toe River and its tributaries, taking in the views from Grandfather Mountain, skiing/tubing the local ski resorts,Â and discovering the surrounding down town areas with unique shops and restaurants.Â Enjoy the remote and relaxing atmosphere on property that includes hiking/mountain biking trails, a playground and a sliding rock waterfall. The space: Hilltop is located in Plumtree Campground and Retreat. The cabin has a covered porch with two gates and a back deck with a gas grill and picnic table. There is a fire pit for use. Keyless entry for self-check in/out 1 bedroom with a queen bed including linens Bathroom with fluffy towels and complimentary soap Central heat/air Washer/dryer Full kitchen with refrigerator, stove, microwave, and toaster Dishes, pots/pans and utensils Coffee maker with complimentary coffee TV with Direct TV box Other things to note: There is parking at the side of the cabin. Speed limit on property is 5 mph and be watchful for walkers, bikers and children. Please be respectful of other guests. No loud music or parties in cabin, on porch or pavilion. No smoking in cabin (additional cleaning fee will be charged) and porch/pavilion. Pets: Limit of one dog and an additional dog may be allowed by pre-approval. Pet fee of $25 will apply (second dog will be additional $25) and will be paid prior to check in. Dogs must be nonaggressive, house trained, under voice/e-collar command and remain on a leash while on property. No pee pads are allowed in studios and waste must be picked up/disposed. Dogs must be supervised at all times and not left on property alone. Any disruptive behavior will not be tolerated and guests will be asked to leave. Damage by dogs will be the responsibility of the owner.

My partner and I had a great time at Plumtree! The staff and owners were incredibly welcoming and helpful. The bathrooms were very clean and the site having a water pump made life easy. Will definitely be back and highly recommend the campground.

I-2 Creekside Platform

Overall we had a good experience. The campsite is very peaceful next to a creek and pretty secluded compared to most campgrounds. Jimmy the manager is professional and very helpful. Two things that I think could be improved would be railings on the tent platform especially since it's about 5 ft off the ground with rocks beneath. The second is the path to get down to the site is very rough and hard to walk. The other sites next to this one don't seem to have this issue. The site did say there was wifi available but only 1 of us was able to get it and had to walk down the road to do so. This did not really put a damper on the trip just something to keep in mind since there's no cell service anywhere in the area. I would book a site here again I would just pick one next to it that's easier to access. Also make sure you check for fire bans before you go! We didn't know this before we got down there and wish we would have known when we booked.

Plumtree Campground became my home away from home the second I set a foot in it! The camping space felt very private, Jed, Jennifer and Jimmy are the loveliest of hosts, felt like I was visiting family. There’s a creek, waterfall, and hiking trail that you can walk to from the campsite, also, don’t sleep on the camp store, there’s a lot of helpful items in case you forgot something. The location is perfect, close to a lot of attractions if you want to go out and explore. Definitely will be back, thank y’all for everything!

I had a good experience camping here with a friend. The staff was very welcoming and helpful. The showers were a bit small but otherwise the bathrooms were really nice. My main issue at B2 was that the nearby light was bright and buzzed pretty loudly which made sleeping a little tough. Other than that I'd recommend this campground for exploring the Linville Gorge area

I-2 Creekside Platform

Plumtree was probably our favorite campground we have ever stayed at! From the hospitality (free coffee, firewood was brought to our site, friendly staff), to the site (plenty of space, right on the river, privacy while also being close to the bathrooms/showers and camp store). We will 100% stay here again and recommend it to anyone!

Group Tent Area with Pavilion

Highly recommended! This campsite has everything we need: space, nature, and a break from the city. I brought a couple of new campers along, and they had a blast—not just because of the company, but because of the camping experience itself. Visiting Linville Falls and Linville Caverns was a highlight of the trip. The weather was awesome for the two nights and three days we were there. Overall, we had a spectacular experience and will definitely be back! One important thing to add: the bathrooms are super clean. The owners greeted us with a warm welcome and even invited the campers for coffee every morning. Five stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I-2 Creekside Platform

Plumtree was amazing for our group of 3. The I2 site was incredible, and definitely the site we would pick again. Very private and the sound of the creek at night was the chef’s kiss! All three of the hosts were very welcoming and accommodating. Our 2WD vehicles did ok on the terrain, only getting iffy when the ground was wet (but I definitely recommend 4WD for the I sites. The bathrooms were always extremely clean, well stocked, and warm (which was amazing in the 30° weather). The camp store was well stocked with anything we needed or wanted! Overall one of the best hipcamps we have stayed at! 😊 Thank you very much to Jennifer, Jeb, and Jimmy for an incredible stay!

I-3 Creekside Platform

10/10 would recommend. The campground is in a beautiful quiet location, our creekside spot was very private and the waterfall is beautiful. The hosts were kind and accommodating all weekend and the camp store was stocked with anything we forgot! Would definitely visit again, thank you for a lovely weekend!

This is a beautiful property with well appointed campsites and a clean, convenient bath house. The staff is available and proactively checks that things are ok. I would definitely stay here again.

10/10 would stay with Plumtree again. They sent an email with clear directions on how to get to the site days in advance, have a camp store with anything you may have forgotten or need, including treats and drinks. They were so friendly and helped bring our camp gear up to the site in their side by side, firewood was reasonably priced and they even brought more up to the campsite after we purchased more in the store. They had live music Saturday night that was enjoyed by all. The entire property, including the site and bathhouse, were very clean and well kept. All the people staying there were also very pleasant. We will definitely be visiting again!

I loved my stay at Plumtree! Jenifer, Jed, Jimmy, and the other staff were so hospitable and welcoming. They helped us carry our stuff into the site and gave us great local recommendations. I would highly recommend staying at Plumtree! They offered free coffee, had live music on Saturday night, and had a well-stocked camp store available for any last minute needs. Can’t wait to come back and visit again soon!

We truly enjoyed out trip to Plumtree. It was our first visit, so we didn't know exactly what to expect. The owners and manager were extremely kind and helpful. Our campsite was clean and well kept. The bathhouse was well maintained and close by, which helped with the kids. We enjoyed trying a platform for the first time. Our tent was a little large, but it still fit and worked out well. Overall, Plumtree was a great experience!

Jed was super welcoming and was always available if we needed something! The grounds were clean and the bath houses were close by. Jed has coffee and pastries some mornings in the camp store.

Great site - host super helpful as we came in just as it was getting dark. They did a great job helping us back our 19' A frame popup into our space for the long weekend. The live music was a lovely surprise. Large property with trails that meander up about 700' in elevation.

Primitive Cabin #1

Plumtree Campground was a great experience for my family. We stayed in the primitive cabin and it was much roomier than the pictures make it look. Also a lovely view of the mountains from our porch. There is a nice little playground that my daughters loved and even a hiking trail on the grounds. On our second night there was live music which made the experience even more special. The owners and managers were wonderfully nice and helpful. It’s a clean environment and very family friendly. We will definitely be going back!

Hosts were lovely, free morning coffee a great bonus- so welcoming. However , for family of 6, sites we’re far too small and packed in like sardines. (Our tent was only several feet from the neighboring camper trailer!)We would come back in a camper but not again for tent camping. Clean bathroom and convenient trash bins also pluses.

We had a great time at Plumtree. The grounds are nicely shaded and well maintained. It was extremely comfortable with WiFi, Showers and an available camp store. The staff and owners were awesome and fun to chat with. We definitely will be back.

Plumtree Campground is a nice, secluded spot, quiet and comfortable, but near a lot of good hiking in the area (I went to the Roan Highlands and Grandfather Mountain). I was booked for a hike-in spot, but when I arrived they offered me a free upgrade to one of the platform sites right above the creek. It was a beautiful spot- convenient, large, and spread out from the other sites. The bathhouse was only a 1 minute walk away, which was exceptionally clean and well-cared for.

Plumtree Campground was the perfect weekend camping spot. We will definitely be back. The campground hosts are so friendly and available for any of your needs. We had a wonderful time getting to know them and some of the extended campers who stay here. It’s the perfect location with several towns and good hiking spots nearby. The B6 spot was perfect for a super small 14’ camper like ours. Hosts took us right to the spot and gave excellent directions for getting to the campground!

Very friendly camp hosts. The first night it rained, so the next morning they came by and asked if we wanted to exchange our soaked fire wood for dry wood, they even brought it over for us.

The hike in site was like a slice of paradise! Spent a week out there with some close friends and family and we all had a blast! Tons of great hiking spots nearby, and even some scenic trails on the grounds, too. lots of very cool shops and activities around as well. It did rain a little bit, but what's camping if you don't get a little wet? There is a little climb from the camping spot to the parking area but it wasn't that bad as Jimmy was a huge help getting our stuff up the hill. Everyone in the staff was absolutely wonderful and a pleasure to talk to, and the other campers seemed friendly enough as well.
