Get away from the crowds. On 300 beautiful acres once operated as a children's summer adventure camp.. There are 3 primitive campsites, 2 cottages, and a horse sanctuary. The campsites are spaced out around the property for privacy. There are port-a-potties. There may occasionally be a real bathroom available. 4WD or AWD is recommended for all sites due to 1/2 mile gravel road and then completely off road for a short distance. Or, if you are bringing 2WD, there is plenty of parking and then walk to your campsite. We don't recommend trying to bring large RV's due to the access. We have not had a problem with Black Bears on the property. Help us keep it that way. Do not store or keep food in your tent. Don't sleep with food. Keep in mind bears are omnivores much like us. They eat mostly plants but also eat meat. For more info on bear safety, visit www.bearwise.org Winter camping is encouraged with free firewood. However, you will probably need to park on the gravel and walk to your campsite to limit soil erosion of the off-road trail. Pets are welcome only at some sites, but please please let us know you are bringing them and they will need to be leashed due to other animals. A large part of the property is forest with hiking trails, creeks, and wildlife. You can see wildflowers and lightning bugs in season along with deer, turkey, and horses. And all of our spots have a great view of the sky! We're not far from the Bare Dark Sky Observatory. The grass horse arena and the pond were originally built for the summer camp. The pond is stocked with bass and bluegill and has a chorus of bullfrogs in summer. The arena is flat and has a long range mountain view all the way to Mt. Mitchell (highest peak east of the Mississippi). There are also a meadow spot encircled by trees.

Note fall 2025: the water level is lower than usual since we haven't had much rain lately. However, it is still a nice spot. A nature lover's paradise.  It feels very secluded yet not inconvenient. Camp next to the pond stocked with bass and bluegill on a 300 acre mountain retreat in Western North Carolina. Note: If you are bringing small children, we recommend a different campsite still on the property but farther away from the water. There are horses on the property. You will likely also see deer and turkey.

This one is a grassy meadow with seasonal wildflowers surrounded by trees and wild ferns on 300 acres. Several campsites are scattered around the edge with a shared firepit in the center and all the free firewood you need for your entire stay. Plenty of room to pull in, turn around, and set up. On the property you'll find early morning fairytale views, horses, deer, wild turkeys, evening lightning bugs, and a fish pond stocked with bass and bluegill. It's a short walk to water, electric, and the port-a-potty or a flush toilet is available at the main house during daylight hours. We're about a mile off the U.S. Hwy, the last half mile is gravel and then a few feet completely off road, so AWD or 4WD drive is recommended And it's only a few miles to the charming small towns of Spruce Pine and Burnsville where you'll find gas, groceries, coffee shops, and restaurants, or anything you forgot, and we are available to assist if needed.

What a cool spot! Even with a drought and low pond we caught SO MANY fish! Very exciting and fun for my boys! Fun Info: The drive down is a bit step and could see how 4WD would be necessary. There was plenty of wood around to collect for fires. Not a lot of shade until the afternoon so be prepared for that if you’re camping in the summer. There is not a lot of level ground. We camped on a bit of a slant but no big deal! There were people staying at the house on the hill so we only had use of a half bath. Showers are not guaranteed. There is a Walmart about 15 minutes away and various other stores so pretty convenient if you need to run and grab some extras. We went and visited the horse on the farm and they are super sweet, there are also horse treats in the bathroom :) love that. There was a shortage of bullfrogs, apparently, but still, they were very active and chatting all night long. The sound is not consistent so it kept me up a little at first night but the second and third night we got used to it. Beautiful scenery great stay overall! We’ll be back!

Host was excellent with communication. I was in late and out early for a trail race and Rebecca was there to make sure I found my spot easily and was wonderful to talk to. I only wish that I wasn’t out of there so quickly, this is a wonderful spot in a beautiful part of the state and given the opportunity I will be back again!!

The site has beautiful views. It is private even though the house is right up the hill you can’t see it over a berm. It was a bonus to have access to a bathroom toilet and hot shower. It is a bit of steep walk up to it but still nice to have. We saw deer and heard owls. Would definitely go again. Thank you Rebecca!

We had such a wonderful time at the campsite! The place was nice, peaceful, and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. We had a wonderful experience at this secluded and peaceful campsite. The host was very helpful — she greeted us upon arrival, gave us a warm welcome, and took the time to show us around the site. The location offers great privacy, perfect for a quiet escape. The highlight was the night sky — incredibly dark and clear, making it ideal for stargazing. It was a magical experience to sit under a blanket of stars. The host also provides access to a washroom at her main house, which was a thoughtful touch. Highly recommend this site for anyone looking to relax and enjoy the beauty of the night sky

Our extended family/friends had a great time here! Private and plenty of room for our 4 rigs with 2 overlanding trailers. Great view and Rebecca was a great host! If we stay in this area again, we would definitely have this place on the list.

This was an amazing experience. It had an amazing sight. The stargazing from this location was amazing with the couple of houses dotting the mountains landscape. What amazing experience it was also a great place to be with children.

We had the site by the pond - great private spot even though the house is nearby. You can't see the house though as the site sits in front of a hill. It was so nice to be able to walk over and see their horses and have a toilet nearby up the road in the basement of their home! Great location. Would come here again!

Great spot right on the pond. The whole family enjoyed the sound of the bullfrog soothing us to sleep. Horses grazing around the property was just an added plus. And Rebecca was kind enough to give our daughters horseback rides. We are very happy and will definitely return for future visits.

Quiet, spacious, and peaceful! Loved being able to watch the horses running in the pasture. Definitely bring bug spray as it gets a little buggy down by the pond. Lovely spot for a weekend away from the noise.

We tent camped down at the pond. Very private. Lots of wildlife. Fish, turtle, bull frogs, tree frogs, turkeys, song birds, and more. The bullfrogs and tree frogs are very loud at night, might keep some people awake. So theres a lot of nature sounds, but a lack of annoying neighbors, which is why we chose this place. The bathroom is functional with hot showers and flush toilets, but dingy like a state park campground.

Pond Spot on 300 Acres!
This is a beautiful spot overlooking a peaceful pond. We had a great time sitting by the fire, enjoying the views, and we were even greeted by one of the horses, Sammy, who came down to the camp to inspect what we had for dinner. The frogs werea little loud, but after a while they just fade into background noise.

We loved out stay at the pond site! We spent the day exploring the woods and laying in the sun! It was so cool to see the horses roaming! (I was smitten by Samurai) Rebecca was an awesome host. She was really helpful and available but also let us have the privacy to do our thing. The pond is beautiful! I was glad I had a 4 wheel drive, it was a bit steep but there is a parking area as well and you can walk down your things if necessary. The bathrooms were awesome! I'm usually a primitive camper so it was nice to have access to a shower and bathroom sink and flush toilets. We had cell service throughout the property. I think there may be WiFi available near the bathrooms. It would be a nice and safe area to solo camp. The pond site is closest to the home but it feels completely private.

This location was absolutely perfect for our anniversary camping trip. Very peaceful and private. Would definitely recommend for fishing and leafing. Just beware of bees. I know it’s the outdoors but there was soooooo mannnny.
