Bald Eagles have been seen on April 27th, 2026! The views are hypnotic, looking down and out over the continental divide. Good morning, and sunsets can be seen from the same spot. Your car is parked within feet of your deck, so Car Campers and experienced campers can enjoy. Designed with campers and dogs in mind. The deck is large (384 square feet) with a tin roof. Some are two-thirds, and some are one-third, depending on what one wants for tent size or sun exposure. (See pictures of each site/deck) Each deck features sun and rain curtains to help keep you comfortable in both sunny and rainy weather. Dogs enjoy a two-gate system that allows guests and dogs to be leash-free and away from the road. All dog owners know to pick up after their pets. The human Private Porta John is cleaned frequently. Lights and electrical outlets are 110V (3 prongs) for YOUR coffee pots, electric grills, mattress inflators, crockpots, electric blankets, fans, etc. I do not provide any electrical appliances, other than counter area lighting and low-level string lights, so one can see the night sky. PMany of my campers will "Pay it Forward" and leave coffee pots, hot plates, fans and such, so count yourself lucky to find a deck with them. I provide chairs, 5 gallons of fresh water in containers, a fickle solar shower, and a pop-up changing room, along with an assortment of camping supplies from dog bowls to antimicrobial. I provide various-size garbage bags to manage your garbage. Your parking area is next to the deck. Black Mountain’s tasty restaurants are 4 miles away, and All Trails is an excellent app for finding trails suited for your interests. Be respectful, please. Private Glamping Decks with a view that pictures do not do justice. Private decks on a dead-end gravel road mean hopefully the sounds will only be of nature. The conveniences of electricity, porta john, water, chairs, table, roof, cleaning supplies, rain curtains, and astounding views have my Glampers coming back often. Designed with Dogs in mind with a two-gate system and no need for a leash when on the deck. Obnoxious, barking dogs are not welcome, so bring only controlled and well-socialized dogs. Help me keep it dog-friendly. Never block the road with a park car.

This deck's full roof feel spacious at 384sf. Plenty of furniture to lounge and watch the stars, moon and sun rotate. Parking is very convenient and there is ample counter space and electrical outlets. Most people decide to skip the visit to Biltmore and waste the day reading a listening to nature sounds such as the resident redtail hawk, the ever present family of crows or hopefully a whipporwill at dusk.

This site has parking accomodation for a Class B Van (no bigger) and a 110 power cord is available. This has a 2/3 rd roof so those who want to have sun. Plenty of sturdy supports for hammock lovers. Park next to your deck. Limited to one Class B van or two normal size vehicles. Private Glamping Decks with a view that pictures do not do justice. This is a roomy full roof deck with a wide western view of the mountains that run along the continental divide. Plenty of chairs and furniture to lounge about. Your parking is next to your deck. The view is to the West and South high enough from the ground to look down on raptor birds from above, which is a very cool perspective. The 271 Deck has a large number of steps (45), so it could be in such a more sucluded viewing spot. This is where I have my private kit for sleeping overnight spontaniously.

Mountainsides and sunsets are captivating, such that you decide not to go into town, but laze about on an easy chair and work on that lifelong bird list from this 384 square foot deck. Private portajohn, lights, electrical outlets, chairs, table, 5 gallons of freshwater, and other items to make camping a Glamping experience. Good dogs are welcome and there is a two gate system to let dogs be free. Parking for two cars steps away from your deck. Trip time to Black Mountain and I-40 is 14 minutes away.

The 285 deck has a southern exposure and a short and long range view of a pasture valley and mountains. It measures 24x16 and 1/3rd of it is roofed with rain curtains. Lots of room for those with a big tent. This deck is sheltered from the prevailing winds and has just a few steps to your car. The electricty and private porta john is available at each deck. Bring any 110 eletric device, such as fans, griddle, crockpot, blenders, etc. The two gate system makes managing dogs easy. Parking is in the large shared parking area next to deck 283. Do not block road as EMS vehicles need to get by.

We loved our trip. We did "Above the Fray "platform camping in Black Mountain #285 . It was our first time and we stayed just one night. We went with minimal items and just blew up an air mattress and slept under the stars. Very quiet. We will go back.

Above the Fray completely lived up to its name! I didn’t want to leave. Doug has created something really special, and you can tell how much love and care he’s put into every detail. His communication was excellent from start to finish, and check-in and check-out couldn’t have been easier. The platform shelter was solid, comfortable, and perfectly positioned to soak in the incredible views. Watching the mist roll through the Continental Divide made it feel like I was camping above the clouds. I camped through some storms, and the rain tarps were amazing—the bungee cords kept everything secure, and I stayed dry the whole time. The camp shower was another added convenience. It was refreshing and invigorating. Electricity, plentiful water, and probably the cleanest porta-potty ever were huge bonuses. My electric kettle was worth bringing, and next time I’ll definitely pack an electric griddle. Pro tip: stock up on ice before heading up—you may not want to leave! My dog, Kaya, loved it too. She spent hours relaxing on the platform enjoying the view and had plenty of room to wander the stairs and settle in for peaceful nights. If you head into Black Mountain, support the local businesses. Lookout Brewing, the General Store, Sister Gifts, and a walk around Tomahawk Lake were all highlights. The strength and recovery of this community after Hurricane Helene are truly inspiring. ❤️ I’ll definitely be back. Thank you, Doug!

Beware of black mold

While the views were stunning, the camp setup was neglected and not taken care of. The black mold was so heavy and stagnant that I couldn't smell anything but it for the entirety of the one night I stayed. I had to leave out at 6am the next morning because it was making me sick even though I paid for 2 nights. The wood and the the furniture are covered in black mold. And I don't think this has ever been cleaned or the wood ever treated to prevent this issue. I'm highly disappointed as i'm now sick trying to finish out my hiking adventure. Doug responded that mold and moss are normal when I complained lol.

My wife and I have stayed at Above the Fray 3 different times. Twice at 271. We love it. Everything is thought of. If you want to relax and get away from the chaos, but only be minutes from town, this is your spot.

We planned to back country hike with our 2 young kids, but when the forecast changed to mostly rain we booked at Fray Glamping. Check in was super easy. Doug was extremely helpful and helped us extend our stay another night. It was great to be covered from the rain with the shelter as well as the curtains that completely enclosed our tent. As the description says there is no running water and only electric. The natural spring down the road was easy to find and the best water I have ever tasted. The port a potty was on the 2nd level and super clean. We will definitely be back to Black Mountain and Doug’s Fray glamping.

30th Birthday Weekend Glamping

We had an incredible weekend celebrating my 30th birthday on the deck. We heard the Whip-poor-wills, cooked many delicious meals, and enjoyed coffee with the sunrise views. It was also incredible having a natural spring for water just down the road. During the day, we made the short drive up to the Blue ridge parkway (one of my favorite places in Western NC) and went on a few hikes and had a picnic. Afterwards, headed in to downtown Black Mountain (15 minutes from site) and walked around a local market they had. I could not have asked for a better weekend and stay at above the fray. We will definitely be back. Thank you, Doug for sharing this beautiful space with us!

We love camping on Doug's decks! Such a cool spot and incredible views, our dog loves it too. Having power, a port-o-potty, and a covered roof makes this a great experience. We don't even bring a tent, we just sleep on the deck. Also, Doug is a super-host. We left a bag behind accidentally and he mailed it to us. Much appreciated!

The view is worth it!! You’re definitely secluded, but it’s not too far from town if you need something. It rained on us several times but we stayed dry with the rain tarp curtains and roof.

Weather-friendly camping with views

Camping at 271 was such a great experience! The weather for the weekend was near-constant rain (to include thunderstorms!) but we were sheltered from it all thanks to the full roof and rain curtains. We slept so peacefully with the sounds of rain on the tin roof. The porta-potty was very clean and I appreciated that it was on a separate landing. We chose to set up tents in the deck and it worked so well to give us a little privacy when camping with friends. The other campsites nearby were no bother, especially with the tree cover. It felt like we were on the mountain alone most of the time. Once the rain cleared on our final morning, the views were truly spectacular! It was nice to be close to downtown Black Mountain for an afternoon of walking and shopping during a break in the rain. The location of this site is really perfect. If you’re someone who needs running water on your trip, this isn’t your site. But I thought that was me and I’ve changed my mind after this trip! We will definitely book again. Pro-tip: take your trash out every night and be sure to have an airtight container to store food. The first night we didn’t think much of it and must have had a visiting creature that nibbled holes in the small amount of trash we had. Once we started storing everything more securely for the night we had no other visits. It’s easy to forget you’re really outside once you close the curtains. Doug, you have a very special spot and we are grateful to have shared it!

An absolutely amazing place to camp. It was me and a friend and we felt very safe and definitely spoiled by the beautiful views!! We will definitely come back, and bring our friends to rent a second space beside us! With all of the storms that came through while we were there we’re crazy but having the porch cover and tarps provided we stayed way more dry than a normal campsite!

Turning into one of our favorite places to camp. Second time coming here. First time was an impromptu booking when rain was in the forecast. It’s so beautiful and peaceful but with the convenience of being close to town and having water and power. With a dog and a young child, having the ability to lock them in a fenced in area but still feel like we’re remote camping is the best.

The view at View Like No Other did not disappoint. We watched the sun dip behind the mountains each night. The deck was pristine (as was the portapotty - seriously have never been in one so clean!) and supplied everything we needed: electrical outlets, extension cords, christmas lights, chairs, tables, WATER!, a changing pop up tent. During the day we drove to hike around the area and enjoy adorable downtown Black Mountain. We loved it!
