The views are hypnotic and look down and out over the continental divide. Good morning sun and sunsets can be seen in the same spot. Your car is parked within feet of your deck so Car Campers and experienced campers can enjoy. Designed with campers and dogs in mind. The deck is large (384 square feet) with a tin roof. Some roofs are full size, some 2/3rds and some 1/3rd, depending on what one wants for tent size or sun exposure. (See pictures of each site/deck) Each deck has sun and rain curtains for helping keep comfortable in normal weather. Dogs enjoy a two gate system so quests and dogs can be leash free and away from the road. All dog owners know to pick up after their pets. The human Private Porta John is cleaned weekly. Lights and electrical is 110V (3 prongs) for YOUR coffee pots, electric grills, mattress inflators, crockpots, electric blankets fans, etc. I do not provide any electrical appliances, other than counter area lighting and low level string lights so one can see the night sky. Many of my campers will "Pay it Forward" and leave coffee pots, hot plates, fans and such, so count yourself lucky to find a deck with them. I provide chairs, 5 gallons of fresh water in containers, fickle solar shower and pop up changing room along with an assortment of camping supplies from dog bowls to antimicrobial wipes. I provide various size garbage bags to manage your garbage. Your parking area is next to the deck. Black Mountain’s tasty restaurants are 4 miles away and All Trails is a great app for finding trails suited for your interest. Be respectful to the place and please be friendly to the people you meet. Learn more about this land: Private Glamping Decks with a view that pictures do not do justice. Private decks on a dead-end gravel road mean hopefully the sounds will only be of nature. The conveniences of electricity, porta john, water, chairs, table, roof, cleaning supplies, rain curtains, and astounding views have my Glampers coming back often. Designed with Dogs in mind with a two-gate system and no need for a leash when on the deck. Obnoxious, barking dogs are not welcome, so bring only controlled and well socialized dogs. Help me keep it dog friendly. Never block the road with a park car.

Perfect Summer Get-A-Way
Loved loved loved camping on the platform. I spent 7 nights and had a great experience. Even in summer rains the deck was a perfect get-a-way. Thank you.

We have glamped on Doug’s decks several times, and have never ever been disappointed. The views are spectacular; location is very private but plenty close to all that Black Mountain has to offer; and Doug is an awesome host. We will absolutely return!!

Cannot recommend
It was unclear from the description and pictures that there are 44 very steep stairs between the deck and the road/parking spot. Although posted as dog friendly, for this deck the only place for the dog to go potty was at the top of the stairs. It would also have been very difficult to unpack everything. We called Doug using the number on the sign at the deck entrance, but he did not call us back. Some of the decks were much closer to the road. I think the number of deep stairs needs to be made more clear and the fact that there is no place for the dog to go other than at the top of the stairs. We left and did not use the site. Unfortunately, when the owner did respond via Hipcamp, the response was rude. First bad Hipcamp experience.

Deck plus room for Class B Van. 269
This is the second time we have stayed at Above the Fray. The first time was last fall so I was a little apprehensive about camping in July but luckily the weather cooperated. It was warm during the day (not unbearably so) and cooled off enough at night that we needed blankets. Above the Fray is by far my favorite “Glamping” location. The views are spectacular, and the sites are private. You can tell a lot of thought went into setting these sites up. Motion lights on the walkway, double-gated for your fur babies, electricity, a shower tent, 5gal of water and a private porta potty. Not to mention other items that were either provided or left over from other campers (like a hot plate at one site, utensils, bug spray, etc.), but don’t count on that stuff as it will vary from site to site and I’m sure after every camper. However, if you forget something which you probably will because forgetting to pack at least one important item is half the fun of traveling, there’s a dollar general and Ingles 15 minutes away. It’s totally worth it. We plan on returning in October and just might make it an annual thing.

We will be back!
The views are beautiful and it's not far from Black Mountain, albeit a bit off the beaten path. We slept in our camper van and spent the days and evenings enjoying the deck when we weren't away. Even without a camper van, the electricity and proximity to your vehicle would make it very practical to bring a tent and electric air mattress. The sounds at night were very peaceful and we even welcomed a giant Luna Moth onto the deck the last night. It takes about 20 minutes to get down the mountain so take that into account when making any plans. A small price to pay for a fantastic glamping experience. We will be back!
