The E-volving Hearts Wellness Farm is 14 acres of mostly wooded land in Old Fort, NC. Just a short drive to Black Mountain and approximately a 30 minute drive to Asheville. Here at the farm we provide a sanctuary setting for humans and animals and provide Equine Facilitated Wellness with our two mini rescue horses. We are offering our small, semi private (we and two other tenants live on the property), primitive campsite area to the public this fall in order to generate income to support our mini horses in their continued rehabilitation process. While you are simply renting the campsite, if you desire to participate in some Equine Facilitated Wellness I'd be grateful to discuss adding this to your stay. The campsite is a small tent area carved into the woods near the front of the property and is next to our cleared pasture area and Ceremonial Grounds. It is a short walk from the outhouse and while there is no running water, we will happily fill up jugs. While the property is 14 acres, due to the private dwellings, any private wellness sessions that might be happening on the property, and the fact that we have not recovered our trails after Hurricane Helene, we will ask that you limit your activity to the space provided. Please note that we have many roosters who enjoy celebrating the coming of the morning light! We also have the friendly, mostly free-ranging "Bird Herd". There are coyotes that hunt in the fields around us and bring their celebrations at night and we aren't sure if Little Bear has moved along or not. Overall, this is a great place for those who want more privacy than a campground but don't want to haul yourself deep into the wilderness. You are safe and secure on the property but do know that wildlife is all around. We welcome those who are quiet, peaceful, with an open mind and open heart who are willing and able to honor this sanctuary. We cannot have dogs on the property. PLEASE DO NOT ASK. This isn't about your dog, this is about ours. Finally, we also have a 2 person tent that can be rented for $10 a night if needed.

Come swim, fish, cook and play! PLEASE NOTE, our rate is based on the number of vehicles in your group. The first vehicle is included in the nightly rate and admits 4 campers. WE CHARGE FOR ADDITIONAL CARS. The charge will be added to your booking once you select the number of vehicles at checkout. Please note that each additional car admits four campers. For EXAMPLE, 2 cars = 8 campers total. If you only have two cars but more than eight people, YOU MUST select the "Extra Person" Extra for each night they are camping. Please select these extras at checkout. If you have questions about this PLEASE message me prior to booking. Our 95-acre farm was once owned by the Davis family who predominantly raised dairy cattle. We now raise the wooly Mangalitsa pig and sell to the best chefs and restaurants. We sell our pork at the farm too! All of our campsites are next to running water except the two hilltop sites. Two porta-potties are on the farm and private porta-potties are available for rent. Groups of eight or more are required to rent a porta potty should you not bring your own toilet system with you. We do not allow the use of our small wooded areas as toilets. Note that the parking area is SEPARATE from the site pictured and you can NOT drive down to the site. You'll be sleeping in the parking area and still have access to all our facilities. There's a lot of breakable stuff, tempting treehouses (that might be occupied by other guests!), sites that are within earshot of each other, and hazards that aren't a good fit for kids. THE NEIGHBORHOOD The campground is located in the "Emma" area of Asheville. Also known as "Wild Wild West Asheville" (to distinguish it from regular West Asheville which is about 5 minutes' drive away), this is the last bastion of non-gentrified Asheville. Emma is completely un-zoned, so you get an interesting mixture of mostly residential and agricultural properties that scatter the area. The campground itself is tucked away in a 2-acre wooded valley. We're about 10-15 minutes' drive away from downtown Asheville and a $12-$15 Uber ride. Unfortunately, public transportation is not very accessible from the campground. WHAT'S NEARBY? - There are approximately a bajillion breweries in Asheville, many of which are within 5-15 minutes away. - Downtown Asheville (~10-15 minutes), West Asheville (~5-10 minutes) and the River Arts District (~5 minutes) are full of city life fun - amazing restaurants, live music, shopping, art galleries and did we mention breweries? -So much hiking! Choose your own adventure - waterfalls, mountain-top views, fog-drenched valleys, rambling rivers. There are some trails about 20 minutes away, but to get to the good stuff, you'll drive 40-90+ minutes. - White water rafting ~60-90 minutes away - Tubing down the French Broad River is the ultimate way to chill out in the sun. French Broad Outfitters, Zen Tubing and Lazy Otter are some companies that can take care of all the details for you. These are all 10-20 minutes away. OUR HISTORY We discovered this property in 2017, and quite by chance! We had finished working a seasonal job in Colorado and were on our way out to the coast to look into starting our own business. We happened to come through Asheville and casually stumbled across this property. Long-story-short, we put in a bid on the property. It was accepted, and now we have a real fixer-upper on our hands! Here's some history on the property as reported by the previous owners: The road you park on was the old county road, a long, long time ago. The couple who sold us the property is elderly, and the blue house you pass on the left on the way to park was where the wife grew up. In fact, that enormous pine tree on your right as you come up the road was the old lady's Christmas tree as a child. The jiu-jitsu gym used to be an auction house. Then it was used as a dance hall. Then it became a cabinet-making space and finally a timber frame-making space. Over the past year we've converted it into a jiu-jitsu gym, although you can still see plenty of "upcycled" remnants of previous uses, all around the gym. The campground area itself was slated to be turned into a trailer park. You can tell that the area was partially graded at one point or another. Thanks to that initiative, we have some convenient paths all around! They decided not to follow through on setting up trailer pads since it was more money than they had bargained for. After that, the space was used as a black-market dump! Luckily the city shut it down, and after two spring seasons of cleaning up back there, we're left with what you see! We're going to continue to pour our hearts, souls, creativity and probably more than just a little money into making "The Baying Hound Campground" a fun place to crash for a couple days while taking in all that is Asheville. We had moved to this beautiful quiet country road the year before after spending 15 years in the hustle and bustle of West Asheville. When our neighbor put the land up for sale, we jumped at the chance to protect our view (we live across the street) and own another piece of the heaven we have come to call home. This land has a creek running through it, and is in a quiet, rural, residential area that is a mix of newcomers and families who have lived here for generations. The views are hypnotic, looking down and out over the continental divide. Good morning, and sunsets can be seen from the same spot. Your car is parked within feet of your deck, so Car Campers and experienced campers can enjoy. Designed with campers and dogs in mind. The deck is large (384 square feet) with a tin roof. Some roofs are full size, some are two-thirds, and some are one-third, depending on what one wants for tent size or sun exposure. (See pictures of each site/deck) Each deck features sun and rain curtains to help keep you comfortable in normal weather conditions. Dogs enjoy a two-gate system, allowing guests and dogs be leash-free and away from the road. All dog owners know to pick up after their pets. The human Private Porta John is cleaned on a weekly basis. Lights and electrical outlets are 110V (3 prongs) for YOUR coffee pots, electric grills, mattress inflators, crockpots, electric blankets, fans, et I do not provide any electrical appliances, other than counter area lighting and low-level string lights, so one can see the night sky Many of my campers will "Pay it Forward" and leave coffee pots, hot plates, fans and such, so count yourself lucky to find a deck with them. I provide chairs, 5 gallons of fresh water in containers, a fickle solar shower, and a pop-up changing room, along with an assortment of camping supplies from dog bowls to antimicrobial. I provide various-size garbage bags to manage your garbage. Your parking area is next to the deck. Black Mountain’s tasty restaurants are 4 miles away, and All Trails is an excellent app for finding trails suited for your interests. Be respectful to the place and please be friendly to the people yo Learn more about this land: Private Glamping Decks with a view that pictures do not do justice. Private decks on a dead-end gravel road mean hopefully the sounds will only be of nature. The conveniences of electricity, porta john, water, chairs, table, roof, cleaning supplies, rain curtains, and astounding views have my Glampers coming back often. Designed with Dogs in mind with a two-gate system and no need for a leash when on the deck. Obnoxious, barking dogs are not welcome, so bring only controlled and well-socialized dogs. Help me keep it dog-friendly. Never block the road with a park car.

This no ordinary campground. Pause is an adventure that will feel like you are exploring your own private mountain nature reserve. Aramesh is 120 acres of Blue Ridge heaven with something for every wilderness adventure seeker: unmatched mountain views, lush old growth forests, babbling brooks, and miles of trails for all skill levels. The property starts at 3700 ft altitude, with summit at 4500 ft on the Glades mountain ridge. My wife and I moved to the area, from Boone, in the spring of 2014. Our dream was to own a house, preferably a cabin, on top of a mountain with long range views and a gradual winding road to the top. Living in Boone, this dream was definitely out of reach. When we began our search for a new home in the Asheville area, we discovered that the more affordable homes were in fact on the mountains. Perfect! In general I always have a pretty positive outlook on what’s possible, however, I was skeptical that we would ever find our dream home. As Jeannie began her Zillow browsing adventures, one particular cabin with acreage, that was outside of our budget continued to pop up. Jeannie would delete it and then it would come back. At some point the price began to drop, and drop, and drop. On our way back into town one weekend after attending a wedding, I convinced Jeannie to drive by the cabin just because we had the time. Immediately we fell in love and reached out to our realtor buddy. It was more of a shot in the dark but it couldn’t hurt, right? We held our breath for the next month totally expecting someone to get it under contract before us or the sellers not accepting our offer. It had already been reduced significantly so we knew our chances of a lowball offer were slim. We offered the most that we could get a loan for. They accepted! I still get anxious thinking back to that month, October 2014. Many years and two children later, here we are, just as excited everyday to make the long trek up our mountain as we were that August of 2014, and now we are happy to offer a similar experience to you, without having to buy the place. Learn more about this land:   Pitch your tent in the grass on the tip top of the mountain or park your camper in the flat gravel spot with a fire pit just below the top with beautiful views overlooking Cane Creek.  In the fall and winter enjoy 360 degree views and in the summer enjoy the shade and cool breeze while relaxing & snacking on wild wine berries and black raspberries.   What you will not find is light pollution, traffic, and a desire to leave the mountain.  Fall asleep to the calls of the hoot owl and wake up to the knocking of the wood pecker.       If & when you decide to explore the area, be sure to checkout Hickory Nut Gap farm just 7.9 miles away & Whistle Hop Brewery 7.7 miles away.  Turgua brewery just down on Cane Creek road is only 6.2 miles from camp.  Cane Creek Valley Farm as well as the Cane Creek Community swimming pool is also at the base of camp just in case the kids need a dip of ice cream or a dip in the pool.  Justus Apple Orchard is only 10 miles down the mountain towards Hendersonville.  We love taking our kids there.      We are only 15 miles from downtown Asheville & Hendersonville, and 22 miles from Lake Lure. This no ordinary campground. Pause is an adventure that will feel like you are exploring your own private mountain nature reserve. Aramesh is 120 acres of Blue Ridge heaven with something for every wilderness adventure seeker: unmatched mountain views, lush old growth forests, babbling brooks, and miles of trails for all skill levels. The property starts at 3700 ft altitude, with summit at 4500 ft on the Glades mountain ridge. We have only a few campsites on the vast property, so the wind in the trees and birds will be all you hear. Come and stay with us and be renewed! IMPORTANT: 4WD or AWD is required to access our property. There is a sometimes steep and windy gravel road into Pause. Please make sure your vehicle has 4WD or AWD before you book. Beth and Rob were awesome Hosts, and they have an amazing property! I car/tent camped at Site 5 for 3 nights. My favorite thing to do was sitting on my "lawn", reading a good book, and listening to the creek. So relaxing. Four of the Dispersed Sites on the level below were filled on the weekend. The entire place was still nice and quiet. The outdoor shower was wonderful, and the Port-a-Potty was clean and serviced weekly. My Granddaughter is a Freshman at Brevard College, and Trails & Tails Waterfall HipCamp will be my home away from home when I visit! 😊

My girlfriend and I stumbled upon this hidden gem one weekend, and we were so blown away that we immediately booked it again for the very next weekend! The hosts, Mike and Kelly showed phenomenal hospitality and they even helped us haul our gear to and from our campsite. The Far Out has quickly become one of our favorite spots to unwind and just soak up time together by the water. If you’re looking for a truly secluded, serene waterfront campsite, this place is an absolute must. Will be back!

At The Ridge is a magical little campground tucked into the Pisgah National Forest. We visited at peak fall and the colors were absolutely stunning. A peaceful creek runs through the property, and we spent our evenings by the fire with the sound of water in the background. It felt like a fairytale. The grounds are well-kept, quiet, and beautiful. The hosts were so kind and even helped us park when we arrived after dark. Truly one of the best camping experiences we’ve ever had.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I stayed for three nights while visiting nearby family and needed a peaceful place to pitch my tent. (I actually prefer sleeping on the ground when traveling alone.) I was so fortunate to have chosen this spot over all the other possibilities! I stayed at the “A” site — super quiet to the point that I didn’t even need my earplugs. There were a few other campers, but they were hardly noticeable, and there was no nearby traffic noise at all. The running brook next to the tent site added a peaceful, relaxing background sound that made my stay even better. My hosts were warm and attentive, making sure I had everything I needed. I could tell they were truly in touch with Mother Earth and cared for the land in a thoughtful way. I’m already looking forward to coming back with my partner to explore more of the hiking and biking opportunities in this beautiful area.

The property was quiet and well maintained. If you want to unplug for a few days then this is definitely the place. Convenient to Maggie Valley, Waynesville and the Blue Rodge Parkway. I really enjoyed our stay! The only improvements I would suggest would be adding Plexiglass to close the glamping trailer in for the colder months so it could potentially be heated by a small electric heater or screening to keep the mosquitoes out during the summer. Our trip was the first freeze of the fall and the trailer got very cold! Luckily we had great sub zero sleeping bags and even a small electric blanket which helped tremendously. The moisture blowing in off the pond is really what made it a little uncomfortable. I have camped with my horses in very similar set ups for years and found these things to be super helpful. This glamping set up has electricity which could make it a little more comfortable for folks who aren't used to the elements. Great place and great hosts! Will definitely stay again.

I loved camping here there was this huge observation ridge and the tents had everything you’d need, plus the site had bundles of firewood available as add on or purchase on site. It was very cold when I went so I am glad they included a space heaters for the tents. I only wish I known where it was sooner. I brought my dog along as well for her first camping trip. Having everything available made it easier to look after her.

The farm was absolutely beautiful and perfect for camping. The hosts are very friendly. I stayed at the troutfall deck which is what I consider luxury. It really made it easy to set up and relax with the elevated deck views of river and mountains. Next I stayed at the Knoll site which over looks the river and fields with roaming livestock. If you stopped to read reviews on this Hipcamp just trust me and all the others that say this place was great and well worth the trip.

Our stay at The Cabin at Fern Gully was pure magic! The property feels completely secluded and peaceful — surrounded by trees and the sounds of the river — yet it’s just a short drive to downtown Greenville, where there’s no shortage of great restaurants, shops, and things to do. The cabin itself was spotless, cozy, and thoughtfully stocked with everything we needed for a relaxing getaway. The hosts were incredibly friendly and responsive, offering great local tips and making sure we had a wonderful experience from start to finish. Our favorite part was spending evenings down by the river, sitting around the campfire and making s’mores under the stars — it felt like our own private nature retreat. If you’re looking for a place that’s peaceful and private but still close to all the action, The Cabin at Fern Gully is an absolute must-book. We can’t wait to come back!

Incredible seclusion nestled among the trees in the mountains. Sunrise and sunset can be seen through the trees and with a short walk, sunrise can be seen over an insane valley of the neighboring property with gorgeous mountains in the background. The silence was incredible. The changing colors were beautiful. If you’re looking for a primitive site that also comes with the creature comforts of a bathhouse, you really can’t go wrong here. Its privacy with a bit of luxury that I haven’t found many other places that offer both. The bathhouse was really nice and nowhere near that far of a walk through the woods that others mention. Clayton and Tiffany were great hosts. They called their cows and yaks so that we could feed them and be wowed over the size of the yaks which are freaking huge. It was raining quite a bit and they offered to drive us back to our campground rather than hiking back which was incredibly generous and appreciated. We were having a ridiculously difficult time finding a private site that would accommodate our van instead of a 4x4 but we are really glad we found this site. We can’t recommend it enough.

Site 3, The Rapids, was everything we could have asked for. The site was very large, and was right on the Pidgeon River. The property was hilly with gorgeous views, and the pastures and animal enclosures were very well manicured! We felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. There are roads and trails throughout the 95 acres for walking. The hosts were very hospitable! They showed us to our site, and were available if we needed anything. We definitely would recommend this Hip Camp!

Great spot & beautiful site! Right beside the creek so listening to the bubbling water all day & night was incredibly peaceful! Nice hookups conviently located, helpful hosts nearby, someone even placed our firewood under a picnic table while we were away MTB so it stayed dry when it rained… an incredibly simple but huge gesture! Also if you take a walk around the campground you will see ducks and trout. Thank you for having us & we are looking forward to coming back!!!

Camping in Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site, NC guide

Overview

About

Connemara, the home of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and writer Carl Sandburg, is located on 264 gorgeous acres in western North Carolina. Sandburg and his family moved to this home in Flat Rock in 1945 for the solitude his writing required. It also offered more than 30 acres of pastureland for his wife's champion dairy goats. Mrs. Sandburg owned and operated a premier goat dairy from 1935 to 1965.

Today the park service raises goats at Connemara that represent the same three breeds Mrs. Sandburg raised. They are definitely the stars of the show here. Time your visit right in the summer and you might enjoy a Ranger's cheese-making demo. Go in April or May, and you'll get to hang out with newborn baby goats in the barns. Squee, baby goats!

The Sandburg family home underwent a huge preservation project that began in 2015. The library of 10,000 books and more than 30,000 items of furnishings were returned to the house in September 2018. All the finishing touches are scheduled to be complete by the end of 2018. Be sure to take the 30-minute guided tour of the spruced-up historic Carl Sandburg Home. It's a great chance to get an insightful glimpse into the lives of this remarkable literary family.

Save at least an hour to hike the gorgeous acreage. Grab a map and set out on one of the well-maintained trails around the lake or up the mountain. The property is serene and peaceful with amazing views. Goat hugs are guaranteed. It's easy to understand why Sandburg spent the last 22 years of his life here and enjoyed a prolific publishing career during that time.
