Very peaceful location. Look for the stone steps on river left when approaching the campground. Plenty of firewood to find. The picnic tables need a little love but all in all we would definitely return again.

We really enjoyed our stay at BackRhodesRanch. The camping site was very nice right next to the river. The other campers were very chill. We had car trouble and Steve hooked us up with a competent mechanic who got us on the road. Highly recommend.

My family and I stayed here as we were paddling on the French Broad Paddle Trail. The site was well maintained with mowed grass, fire rings, and picnic tables. The site was very spacious and the host was easy to communicate with and responsive to any questions we had.

We love camping here. It's peaceful, and easy put in/out for canoes/kayaks. Plenty of space to park, set up camp, and hang hammocks. Will definitely be back.

Great flat spot with a picnic table, small fire ring, and elevated toilet. Watching the moonrise from Site 2 was spectacular. Lots of wonderful wildlife (deer, screech owl, frogs, etc). The steps up to the site are shielded in the trees so watch carefully on river left when you're getting close if approaching from the river side.

STAY HERE!!! What a magical and special place; along with a wonderful host. As we pulled in we were greeted by 20-30 guineas, a few deer hopping across a meadow, and a massive snapping turtle (it almost felt set up with how perfect the welcome party was). The land was beautiful and the sites were in shaded areas. Will definitely be coming back here. Perfect location for Pisgah National Forest, especially if you don’t wanna deal with the crowds or a park ranger breathing down your neck.

Nice campsite with good facilities. Quiet with available wood for fire, flat tent sites, good tables, and OK potty. River access is difficult with wet, down sloping steps rising from deep water. Access is poorly marked and appears before it is marked on the river guide map.

The site is tucked away back past some houses, fields, and bumpy dirt roads, but once you get there, it is great. Private, with open and shaded spots. Nice access to the river.

Stephen showed us to the site. he explained the camping site was a little messy from the storms but it wasn't a deterrent for us. the camping area was private and was in front of a creek. when we went, there was no bugs. we enjoyed camping between the corn fields and the creek. would definitely come back!!

Had a great time camping with the family! We had 13 people tent camping for 2 nights. We did a canoe trip from Penrose to the campsite. We would've gone on down to Lazy Otter the next day, but it was going to rain hard.

This was my second time staying here and I can’t wait to go back! It’s an awesome campsite right on the river with a great host. I love that it’s secluded and not extremely close to any houses like other places we have stayed. The outhouse was clean and stocked with TP in case you forgot yours!

Toilets are very bad , basic should be available . They charged more . We paid $65 per night but no proper toilet and no water no shower nothing is available. At least they should reduce the price .

One word - PHENOMENAL. Stephen was such a great host, warm and friendly. The site was tucked far back behind a corn field, right along the French Broad. Very shaded with spaced out trees, fire ring and picnic table. We will definitely be back again over this summer trip, and over Thanksgiving week.

Steve was a very nice host. We booked the night before and he accepted our request. He did say he wish the camp sites were a little more manicured. He was also nice enough to let us pick which ever camp site we wanted as we were the only people there that night. We camped on Site #2 as it was the only camp site that was good for tent camping. The weeds and grass were too high on the other sites. The only other downside is that we wanted to get into the river and were unable to as the banks were very overgrown. The outhouse that he constructed was really nice! If you want a forrest feel, this is the place to go!

Stephen was a great host. Very flexible and easy going. Loved the group camp spot we booked. With many adults and kids, it was the perfect end of school camp out for our group. The kids and dogs loved running around.

The site was very spacious and beautiful. A bit complicated for us to find via car due to losing GPS service but once we called Stephen he talked us through step by step. You will be driving off road for some duration so be prepared for mud and water depending on the season. We made it through with 2 SUVs and a Prius though with no issues after a day of rain. I would recommend and come back 👍

Loved this site so much! It can be a little difficult to make your way back to the campsite but Stephen directed me and I was able to find it pretty easily. Sites are secluded. Bugs are out so bring bug spray! Would definitely stay here again.
