Crooked Mountain

11 sites · Tents47 acres · Floyd, VA
We are a family/veteran-owned small farm offering primitive creek-side and open field camping that's perfect for motorcyclists, car campers, and tourists traveling on an adventure. We are located along the historic Crooked Road Music Trail and right off the Blue Ridge Parkway at mile marker 159.3. The picturesque town of Floyd is only 4 miles away, with easy access to music, shopping, multiple grocery stores, local and international themed restaurants - all with a true feeling of Appalachian hospitality. There are 6 creek-side campsites and open-field campsites in the peaceful field, all with access to trails. We have been developing our dream property and wanted to welcome visitors with affordable tent camping in an incredibly beautiful area of the country. Also, on the property we have a store with essential camping needs, local products, artisan items, coffee, and souvenirs. During the summer we offer a "YouPick" flower experience in our crop field (come get a container and pick your own bouquet of flowers) and special/tourism events. Peak season for flowers is from July to September. We would love for you to camp and give us feedback as we are constantly improving things. Our newest amenity is a 1 mile hiking trail that starts at the campground and takes you through the woods to the top of our property. Come ride, camp, and explore the area!

NEW RIVER REDEMPTION

5 sites · Lodging, RVs, Tents1 acre · Jefferson, NC
If you are looking for a secluded campsite deep in the woods, you may want to keep looking. But if you want the ease and peace of a campsite RIGHT ON THE NEW RIVER with everything just steps from your tent, then come out and claim your site! Redemption: To repair or restore. To make good. This campground represents redemption and healing in so many ways. Our hope is that you will find much peace, joy, and adventure here and we promise to do our best to make it everything you expected and more! Numerous large manicured campsites in an open space DIRECTLY ON THE NEW RIVER where adventures abound! Up to 4 guests and 2 tents per site. Newly constructed tiny home provides GLAMPING at its finest! The Liberty cabin shares a space with a few tent sites along the river. With the addition of Liberty, I have limited the number of campers to 4. (Exceptions may be made for holiday weekends). There is plenty of space for everyone and the cabin sits above the tent sites for amazing views and privacy. While HWY 16 can be a bit noisy during busy times, step into the campsites and let the peaceful noise-canceling river serenity whisk you away. Forest views across the river with endless fireflies and stars that light up the night! Zaloo's Canoes, Kayak, and Tubes is within eyesight and will set you up with an amazing float or paddle down river. Plentiful small mouth bass and trout fishing just steps from your site. Outhouse w/washing station. Fire pits at each site as well as a large communal fire pit and picnic tables. Downtown West Jefferson is just 15 minutes away with local breweries, quaint restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries, shopping, music, art, and a wonderful farmer's market from May - October. The quaint little town of Lansing, NC is quickly becoming a favorite stop of mine. Check out the Old Orchard Creek General Store, Pie on the Mountain Pizza, the Old Orchard Creek Blueberry Farm, and Molly Chomper for a perfect day in Ashe County. The New River State Park is an easy walk, float, paddle or drive away. This park is absolutely GORGEOUS and impeccably maintained, including hiking trails, public facilities, showers, boat launch and pick up, etc. Just a short drive to multiple Blue Ridge Parkway entry points for ease of access to Boone, Appalachian State University, Blowing Rock, Grandfather Mountain, Banner Elk, and the Linville Gorge. Mount Jefferson and Grayson Highlands are also just a short drive away for unlimited hiking and incredible mountain views. My personal favorite is hiking with the wild ponies at Grayson Highlands! We have Firewood available for a nominal fee. Just let us know and we will make arrangements to have it ready for you upon arrival. Please respect quiet hours between 10 PM and 8 AM each evening.

Woodsy Glamping near Stone Mtn.

2 sites · Lodging23 acres · Traphill, NC
Come relax in a 315 square foot canvas bell tent with all the comforts of home. With a queen bed, sofa, exclusive fire pit, hot water, AC/dehumidifier, shower, and a large cooler, there's not much left to be desired! The tent and lounge areas are protected from precipitation by a roof. Bring your furry friends for no extra charge, and come reconnect with nature on 23 acres of woods just 4 minutes from Stone Mountain State Park and a half hour from over two-dozen wineries! The tent sits on a two-tiered deck and offers the comforts of home in an outdoor setting. Guests are provided with linens and towels, heat and air conditioning, a wood stove and small charcoal BBQ, cookware, and a large cooler where groceries can be stored. With all of these features, it can be easy to forget that this experience is still fundamentally camping. Therefore, we do ask guests to properly secure food and waste items from wildlife that are very active throughout the area including black bear, coyotes, and bobcats. It is rare that any of our wild friends care to interact with humans, but it's better to be safe. Additionally, 4x4 or AWD vehicles are recommend for parking close to the camp site due to loose gravel and a grade, but alternative parking spots are available. The campsite is typically open year-round, but weather conditions are subject to requiring the water be shut off to the sink, shower, and toilet. This is only during winter months when temperatures are likely to cause our water lines to freeze and potentially burst. Water is still accessible at the campsite via a hydrant, however water will be turned off to the fixtures if temperatures dip below freezing. Our property consists of three rental options - two log cabins and the campsite. These three sites are situated on 23 acres located less than 5 minutes from the entrance to Stone Mountain State Park. Please review the attached images which shows an overhead view detailing the distance between the rentals. The Colonial glampsite is marked by the red X. Guests are welcome to explore the property, but we ask all guests to be respectful of each other as well as our resident chickens, which are difficult to miss in their barn-red house near the entrance of the driveway. Furry family members are most welcome - there are no additional fees - and some pet supplies are provided. Pets must be leashed when outside. This is for their safety, the safety of the wildlife, and that of other guest's pets. We do not live on-site but we are able to respond to messages or requests fairly quickly. Please reach out to us for any reason if necessary! ***Fall 2023 Update - As we enter into cooler months, stink bugs began searching for warm environments to live in. We do our best to mitigate against them including hiring pest control and collecting them when they make it inside. However, there is no full-proof insecticide that is successful at preventing them, and they have no natural predators; and unfortunately, they thrive in forest environments like the one where we are located. Please review these circumstances prior to booking your stay. ***

The best camping near New River Trail State Park guide

Overview

About

A state park that's 57 miles long—and skinny as a snake? That's the story of this park that crosses Grayson, Carroll, Wythe and Pulaski Counties.

Hop on your bike for a mostly flat ride that takes you along the banks of the New River for 39 miles. In the Foster Falls area, equestrians can enjoy guided horseback trips and a horse arena. All trails are beautifully maintained.

Stop to rent canoes, tubes or kayaks for drifting on the river, or take advantage of boat launches to get some fishing in. The historic Shot Tower, where ammunition was made 200 years ago, lets you explore the past. Watch for the periodic guided tours.

Four different primitive campgrounds welcome tent campers. Double Shoals Campground is first-come, first-served, but all the rest require reservations. Cliffview Campground has three equestrian spots.

For a unique experience, book your spot at Baker Island Campground—And get ready to do some paddling, since the only access is by kayak or canoe.

Notable campgrounds

  • Cliffview Campground: Offers primitive tent camping with stunning views of Chestnut Creek and access to the New River Trail.
  • Millrace Campground: Nestled by Foster Falls, this campground provides a serene riverside setting for tent camping.
  • Double Shoals Campground: An honor system campground accessible only by river or trail, perfect for a secluded retreat.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book early, especially for peak seasons, to secure your ideal campsite.
  • Consider weekday camping for better availability and a quieter experience.
  • Keep an eye on cancellations for last-minute opportunities.
  • Explore nearby camping options for alternative stays amid the park's beauty.

When to go

The best time to visit New River Trail State Park is from spring to fall, when the weather is mild and the natural beauty is at its peak. Winter months can be less ideal due to colder temperatures and potential trail closures for maintenance.

Know before you go

  • Check for trail closures due to renovations, especially around bridge areas.
  • Remember, the park is open daily from dawn to dusk, with the park office operating Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5pm.
  • Parking is $7 per standard vehicle; have cash or credit ready for self-pay lots.
  • Bring a copy of a negative Coggins report if you're planning to ride horses on the trail.
  • Accessible facilities are available, including certain campsites and restrooms.
