Other markers will guide you through the hiking trails on the property. I live adjacent to the property and will be available by phone. I'm happy to answer any questions about the area and activities surrounding. This is a great space for artists, writers and those looking for peace and space to relax amongst the tall pines and listen to the birds sing. Newaygo is a charming little historic town with the Muskegon River flowing through. Visit the local shops and restaurants or explore the nearby trails and Manistee forest or spend time fishing or kayaking on the Muskegon river. The Dragon Trail is a popular biking trail featuring beautiful views of Hardy Pond.

Bear Tree Homestead is nestled among the cliffs and ravines which drains the south face of Hogback Mountain located in Marquette Township Michigan. Hogback Mountain is one of the larger rock formations in the Huron Range, a surprisingly rugged, and diverse region of low mountains carved by glaciers. Each cabin is hand-built of log and stone using traditional Scandinavian building tools and techniques. The cabins have access to the pond, use of the canoe, a private fire pit, picnic table, charcoal grill and privy. Inside the cabins is a functional kitchen with dishes, flatware, pots and pans, so you can prepare meals onsite. Cabins also have table and chairs as well soft chairs/sofa sitting area, bookshelves with a variety of books, board games and puzzles, and covered porch in case of rain. Our buildings, gardens, and pastures are integrated into the forested landscape and are not your typical homestead. Enjoy the peaceful surroundings, collect fresh eggs (when they are laying), lay in the hammock, listen to the sounds of nature and the barnyard or take an adventure hike, bike ride, snowshoe, or ski right out the door.  One of the most wonderful things we have to offer is the accessibility to thousands of protected acres surrounding us and the trails that bisect them. The property is on the North Country Trail, just over a Noquemanon Trail Network Forestville trailhead where access to year round recreation awaits. Hogback Mountain is just up the trail from the cabin with spectacular views of forest, mountains and lake superior. We are located 8 miles from downtown Marquette in Michigan's Upper Peninsula where there are many great restaurants, shops, and brewpubs. However, once you drive into Bear Tree Homestead and settle in you will not want to leave.

This fun property is just under 7 acres - butted up to another 12 acres of public land (and boat launch) with trails, boardwalk and a dock on 51 acre Lake Eleven. The property is shared by (2) full-hook up RV sites and a cabin. If available, the cabin and sites may be rented together however the owners, Jim and Maria, use the cabin much of the summer leaving just the RV sites available. The property is at mile market 13 of the Kal-Haven Trail - the midpoint. The Kal-Haven Trail is a biking, cross-country skiing, walking, running, snowmobiling - you name it, the trail that goes 34 miles from Kalamazoo to South Haven. Literally steps from the property and you are on the trail. But you may not need to leave the property, with 6.3 acres of woods and field, with trail cut through PLUS the added public lands butted up to Tincan's property line, giving almost 20 acres to roam. Each RV site - far enough apart to be separate, close enough if you and friends/family want to camp together, has a fire pit and fireplace. Each RV site offers water, 30|50AMP electrical and septic. The dock may have availability for keeping you boat - please inquire. There are kayaks and some bikes (mostly teen and adult size) that may be used. These are shared amenities for the cabin and campsite guests and offered on a first come, first serve basis. There are surprises galore around the property; big foots to be found tucked around the property, games, and overall just a fun place to be. This was a run-down fishing cabin Jim and Maria lovingly brough back to life as a second home and they delight in sharing it. Jim often referred to it as "The Tincan" while working on it as it was - indeed, a tin shack and the name stuck. Kate, your booking coordinator, helps Jim and Maria tend to the administrative side of getting the property booked and keeping the details in order. Once booked you'll get contact info for Kate, who will take care of most communications and logistics, and Jim/Maria who will also be available to help as needed.

Our most recent improvement is an air conditioner in the Crow's Nest. Sheila grew up just across the road and spent many hours riding her horse and writing poetry on the property. No discharge of firearms is allowed on this property. As a retired artist, we love to entertain creative peaceful people and many think of our place as a quiet sanctuary that encourages creativity. We provide games, both outdoor and indoor, a screen house, hammock, nature trails and a new camp store with local items and snacks. There is an Amish community close by and a tour map is provided. We are also close to the largest canopy walk in the US at Whiting Forest and Dow Gardens. Only 25 minutes away. There is a small water park in the closest town with a beach. Locally there is tubing and canoeing at the Cedar River in Gladwin and kayaking at Pinconning Park on Saginaw Bay. Guests can explore many antique shops as well as Pinconna and Northwoods Outlet store. Many of our campers never leave the property but choose to relax and watch the life of the forest. We provide linens, towels, and cookware. There is a grill outside and a microwave and oven inside along with a coffee maker and mini fridge.

The south half s home to 8 charcoal kilns which employed a community prior to ownership. The mountain is approximately 1.8 billion years old. Learn more about this land: This campground has 2 tent sites at the western base of Hogback Mountain. Site 1, The Falls Site, is located on a spring fed stream. The hike from parking to tent site is 1/4 mile on a well-marked hilly path. Campers can park at the main property on County Road HD or on the Garden Road, and will need to pack supplies to their site. Site 2, The Garden Site, is 50 feet from the stream and campers can drive to and park their vehicles at the site. Site 3, Mountain View Cabin, is a century old hunting cabin with 2 cots on the main floor and 2 singles in the loft. Site 3 includes an outhouse and sauna. All sites have a picnic table, firepit and outhouse. Campers are responsible for removal of all other waste. The 2-foot wide stream provides water for washing, but is not considered potable, and use of filters or boiling water is recommended. These isolated sites are beautiful and rustic and nestled in the midst of the Noquemanon Trail Network (cross country skiing and mountain biking) and North Country Trails and are approximately 2 miles from Lake Superior, Harlow Lake and Dead River. 4 kayaks/paddles/life vests and a 12 foot boat are available for camper use. We were married in 2016 and have four children as part of our blended family. We are both originally from the Upper Peninsula. Superior Times Resort and Campground was the result of us wanting to do something “outside of the box” that would allow us to raise our family and show them there is more out there than the traditional path. We also wanted showcase our love and respect for the beauty of the Upper Peninsula; the area that many refer to as “God’s Country.” In December of 2016, we mistakenly pulled into the driveway of this property. At that time, it was known as Coleman’s Paradise Resort. There was a For Sale sign marking the property. We both knew at that point our fate was sealed to become this property’s new owners. We learned that this property had been a family vacation destination for nearly 100 years. We could only imagine the special memories that had been made here over the years! We wanted to become a part of that deep history. Through the many years of the resort’s history, the owners had changed and the cabins were showing true signs of their age. We knew there was A LOT of work that simply had to be done. On a wing and prayer, we somehow made this great resort ours. In April of 2017, we opened what we named Superior Times Resort and Campground. We pulled up or sleeves and went to work! Thank you for choosing us and allowing us to be part of the memories that you create here. We know that you work hard for your own money, as we do. We bought this property in 2012 and have built several buildings and forged paths throughout the 32 acres. Our road is part of the North Country Trail, a footpath stretching over 4,600 miles from Middlebury in central Vermont to Lake Sakakawea State Park in central North Dakota. While tearing down the existing house, we constructed two bedrooms in the pole barn for a quick living space. Once settled in the pole barn, we a built a small log cabin with already felled timbers from the local woods, except for the box frame which was purchased from the local Amish. Prior to building our permanent log cabin home, this small cabin was our camp site and is now being rented to people that want to relax and enjoy the outdoors. In the middle of the woods, we created a campground to be enjoyed by hikers and on the North side of our property is a tree line between two fields that is a great small camper/tent camping spot.

My son and I overnighted here after a long backpacking trip. Rick’s Cabin could not have been the more perfect place for this ole outdoorsman to stay. You really feel like you are the only one around for miles. The Cabin is constructed by Rick himself and is truly a great work of his craftsmanship. The front porch made it so easy to just relax with the beauty of the forest all around you. The Cabin was well thought out with minimal trees removed to keep it rustic and only what was absolutely needed. The inside was cozy and the beds were extremely comfortable. The wood burning stove set this cabin over the top for me. There’s nothing better. Simple and everything you need to escape the world around us. Thank you Rick for sharing this little slice of Michigan heaven with my son and I. Enjoyed meeting you.

Ed was a great host! Super clean and well maintained property. The port a potty was probably the cleanest I’ve ever used. There was a large group staying at the camp site when I was there but there’s enough space between areas that I couldn’t hear or see them. Would definitely recommend and would definitely go back!

Outstanding place to stay Rick is very inviting and so is his dog Jackson! Beautiful place, relaxing, cozy, warm exceptional piece of property lotta time and care put into that place. We had a great time a great stay with 100% recommend and we will 100% be back!

I absolutely loved staying here. Not only was it nice and surrounded by woods, I had so much fun taking pictures of the wild mushrooms and flowers. The beds were very comfortable and the cabin warms up nicely for those cold nights. We will 100% be booking this cabin again in the future. It had everything we needed to unplug for a weekend.

The Cabin is secluded and tranquil. The toilet facility was clean. Host responded to our inquiries promptly, including when the gas stove propane tank had run out.

2 nights at Bear Tree Homestead

My husband and I stayed at the Pond Cabin for two nights and it was absolutely wonderful. The cabin is so cute, and well stocked with anything you might need to take advantage of its coziness (blankets, oil lamps, matches, tea, games!) and the property itself is gorgeous. The pond is crystal clear, and we spent a bit of time just watching the turtles and tadpoles along the edge. We also got to meet the guard dogs (SO sweet!) and the cows, which were as sweet as the dogs. The directions to get to the site were very clear (and very helpful as cell reception was spotty). For such a remote vibe, it was also surprisingly close to the grocery stores and main areas of town so we were able to get anything we wanted/needed last minute. It was a perfect getaway! There were tons of options for hiking, too, but we decided we’ll come back for that another time. We just absolutely loved this site.

The Grand cabin is a really great stay. Very cozy cabin with super accommodating hosts. Second time there, and it was excellent, just like the first time. It's great for relaxing and unplugging. Would recommend for sure.

Weekend Trip to The Crow’s Nest Forest Camp

This was probably the most special cabin experience I have ever had! We got to the cabin after sundown, it was still very easy to find as Jeff had texted us detailed directions as soon as we began driving from home. The boardwalk that leads to the cabin was lit up in blue, waking up was both amazing and very safe. The cabin itself was so cozy and comfortable, the decor was really cool. The bed was very comfortable, the shower was great. Sheila provided a lot of great extra stuff: coffee, firewood, toiletries, dishes , linens and lots of other things. You really just need to bring food and clothing. The trail around the property was beautiful, we loved the signs. We loved the garden and dock. All in all, it was a restorative and wonderful time at the Crows Nest and we would easily come back. We want to thank Sheila and Jeff for everything they do here and their deep hospitality. The world is that much better due to their hard work :)

Weekend Trip to Bear Tree Homestead

The Pond cabin was truly so cute and so lovely and magical!!!! I keep wishing I could go back and stay for a month straight. It felt very private and like we were in our own little world, the bed was extremely comfortable, the sink for washing hands and dishes was a nice touch. We loved listening to the frogs and the owls around the fire at night. I extremely very highly recommend! If you are on the fence, don't be!!!!!

2 nights at Blissfest Festival Farm

The grounds at Blissfest are expansive. It is very quiet and very dark. There was only one campsite occupied while I stayed in the cabin. The cabin was rustic but the berths had decent mattresses, I could charge devices and there were electric lights, a table with 3 chairs plus a counter top height surface to be put stuff on. Multiple clothing hooks were present on the walls. I really appreciated the modern bathrooms with flush toilets. The solar showers were a bust. The water was cold! The campground cat named Disco was super affectionate and kept me company.

The cabin had some really nice amenities. It was nicer than expected. It's great to be able to have a place that you can take your dog and also allow them to be off leash and I loved being so close to the biking and hiking trail.
