Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space. Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. Most of the buildings out front are artist studios (currently for 16 artists). We like to share the camp with others and watch it come back to life. All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky. We want to share our property with those who want to stay for more than one night, so we do not accept inquiries of single night stays. Peace and quiet equals “Solitude at my farm. I’m just like you. I want to camp at a quiet place in the country where it’s plenty of acres and no houses to look at and a clean bathroom and shower. Well it’s here. I’m Located in Wakefield Virginia. If you’re traveling to Virginia Beach I’m one hour away. From my farm there is a free ferry in Scotland where the ferry departs to Williamsburg just 30 minutes. At my farm I have 5 sites for tent/camping so it’s spaced appropriately apart I have 2 Rv sites totally away for their privacy and a new mini house also properly spaced away. All have a clean picnic table and a fire pit. 100 feet away you’ll find that clean bathroom, shower and a wash station for hygiene. You’ll see the love I put into this and because I love it and my prior guests love it, which means it may be right for you also. In the town of Wakefield you’ll find gas stations, dollar stores, a Value food market and if you want (to go) food we have that also. Plus it’s home to The Virginia Diner. Amenities include toilet access, a shower, trash disposal, picnic tables, and potable water. Pets are allowed, as are campfires.

The property is so beautiful, a true sanctuary. Fran is a gracious host, the facilities are clean and easily accessible (depending on where you’re located). I am so grateful to find this peaceful place, I will be back for sure!! I loved the creek and rope swing and other little details that show the magic of the mountain. Amazing experience. Great location near Old Rag Mtn and Cedar Run waterfall. Brewery across the street from entrance. Easy to get to. No cell service for 15 miles leading to campsite, which was a shock, but a good thing. Arrived, Jennifer hanging out at campfire at beginning of trails to camp sites. Short 0.3 mile hike to Fiddlehead campsite. Very secluded and couldn't hear any other campsites. Campsite setup with separate area for tent and separate area for toilet, both away from campfire and area with table and some kitchen supplies. Perfect setting near a small creek. Loved the animals. The wizard trail was a little disappointing but still a nice hike. Probably our own confusion, but we thought there was a lookout at top of hill. Would definitely come again. Also a perfect little store to pick up some extras. Grabbed some cheese, olives and some fresh okra to cook over the fire. Place is a hidden gem.

We've taken weekends at this yurt 3 of the past 4 summers and loved it every time. We find it peaceful and our young kids like the stream, poultry, campfires, and composting toilet lol. I'd recommend taking a hammock when you go, lots of great spots in the forest for it.

We stayed in the Shady cabin. It was cute inside and fit 2 people comfortably. The porch with rocking chairs was nice to sit on when the rain came. Would have been perfect if the fireplace was cleared from overgrown weeds so we could get to it to use. But, all in all, we had a fantastic, relaxing time there. Many trails to walk and the creek close by was nice.

The campground was lovely! We enjoyed Bunny 5, which had a lot of space to spread out in and lots of nice trees. There is a little trail from the back of our site that leads to a beautiful creek -- it was wonderful to wade in. The common area was fun, there was pingpong and various other games. If you need food, the DG Fresh about 7 minutes away is surprisingly not bad at all! Our campsite was set back from the road, it was about a minute walk from the car to the campsite. This wasn't the case for all of the sites, some of them where close to where you would park your car. The bathroom stalls are VERY small -- I'm not a large person and I struggled. It was workable, but just be aware that it is tricky.

Weekend Trip to Solitude at Thornton Farm

We absolutely LOVED our stay. Marvin is very hospitable. He made sure to greet us and give us all the info when we arrived. After that we were left peacefully to ourselves. Our reactive dogs were able to run off leash safely. Despite being right beside a cornfield, nature was everywhere. We were able to observe bats, rabbits, cow killers, nightshade and the most perfect nightsky. The bathhouse was simple, clean and functional. Can't wait for our next trip!
