Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space. Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. Most of the buildings out front are artist studios (currently for 16 artists). We like to share the camp with others and watch it come back to life. All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky. We want to share our property with those who want to stay for more than one night, so we do not accept inquiries of single night stays. We also don't offer longterm rentals as we focus on short term camping.

About 2/3rds of the property is developed with barns and fenced pastures and the other third is largely undeveloped areas with a loop driveway where most of the camp sites are located. There is a large white house at the far end of the property. The restroom for campers to use is located there. To one side of the driveway, on the way to the house there is a beautiful large swimming pond, complete with beach and gazebo. The property is unique in that you can hardly see another house from anywhere on the property and yet we are only 2 miles from Barracks Rd. Shopping Center, and 4 miles from the University of Virginia.

You can fish and float the river. There are no trails so a moderate level of fitness and comfort in the forest is needed. You can follow the water ways but it is wilderness. Camping there is primitive but available or you can camp or glamp at Earthwalk Ways Retreat. We are also adjacent to a 50 acre farm on the other side of the creek that is available for hiking. There is a reservoir nearby as well. We are in the midst of the suburbs not far from Fredericksburg, which has some great historic and community places of interest. Our facilities are private and we only rent to one or 2 guests at a time. You can glamp in a trailer, or car camp in a nice campground with power and water or you can go primitive and pack in. All spaces include access to our classical 11 circuit labyrinth and backyard gardens where you can enjoy zen rock garden and other contemplative nature crafts. There are some great extra's here as well including an outdoor jacuzzi and indoor infrared sauna and massage chair. These spa features are another great way to get your zen on here. I offer Forest Bathing and individual retreat support sessions, an quarterly sweat lodge and also vision quest support if people would like to experience a solo nature immersion feast.

Firefly has a camp style charcoal grill, a firepit with lots of firewood, a wood pellet stove on the covered deck for grilling when its rainy outside, a wood pellet fireplace for heat, outside shower with hot water, a comfy queen size memory foam bed, fresh linens and towels, and an outside bathtub situated by the creek. it has running water and a composting toilet and there is an unattached bathhouse with a conventional toilet and an outside shower as well. The FireFly is pet friendly and please leave $25 on the counter for the pet fee. The Firefly is 6 miles from I-77 and The Blue Ridge Parkway. I keep all paper products, dishes, cookware and pellets for the pellets cooker and for the heater. Plenty of blankets and there is a pellet heater and a propane wall heater there with plenty of propane.

Weekend Trip to Blackridge Camper Hill

This was a wonderful stop for us. Both the host were incredibly nice. The location was beautiful!!! We saw lots of fireflies and the view of the stars was amazing. The location is one to keep an eye out on as they plan on adding more to it. The only downside was there were ticks, just make sure you check for them and you are good. If given the opportunity again we 100% would come back.

Sly was a great host. We ended up breaking down about 20 minutes from the campsite. He was super accommodating letting us check in late and even took my husband to the local auto parts store to get the part we needed to get back on the road. The place was beautiful right by the creek. Very dog friendly and peaceful. We will definitely be back again

Bob’s place is a hidden gem just outside Charlottesville. I was in town with my girlfriend to see The Head and the Heart play at the Jefferson Theater. We needed a place to stay that was near town and able to accommodate us with a tent and a car that wasn't going to cost as much as a hotel. We stayed on a beautiful horse farm. We felt like we were out in the woods, far from the city, even though we were only about ten minutes from downtown. Can't recommend this place enough!

Hippie Hollow was amazing! Me and my dog spent a long weekend there and I couldn't have picked a better spot. Sly and the other people at the site were so friendly, they suggested great spots in town, and I can't go without mentioning how nice it was to chill in the evening at the bar and hang with everyone. Sly has truly created a magical little place! Bonus, as a solo female traveler I felt safe and welcome the whole time.

Thunder BRidge is such a cool spot. The sites are beautiful and you have tons of privacy. The pavilion by the bath house was a cool place to spend a rainy day. My kids absolutely fell in love with ping pong. Waking up in the screened cabin and feeling the breeze and hearing birds chirping restores the soul!

Weekend Trip to Peace Hill Farm

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Peace Hill Farm. The property was gorgeous, it’s very relaxing and Susan was a great host. I tent camped at Site 3 which is right next to Lafayette Hall. The building and a nearby tree provides some shade if you prefer to not be in full sun. The dogs that guard the farm animals barked a bit my first night there. It is a working farm so that is to be expected. Those working dogs may have either been spooked by my presence or, more likely, were deterring something they felt threatened the farm animals. If you are a light sleeper, you may want to be further away from Lafayette Hall. I was perfectly fine with it though. Lafayette Hall had a nice shower as well as a kitchen. I used the shower, boiled some water for pour over coffee and recharged my phone. I thought the area was very scenic and enjoyed the drive to get there. I definitely would like to come back there to camp again when I am in that area.

4 nights at Private Farm Minutes to Cville

Our stay at the farm was FANTASTIC! We decided on spot #6 and couldn't have been happier with it. Nice and secluded, down a little hill/clearing, with woods surrounding, it felt like we were in our own little magical forest retreat. It's amazing how quiet it is considering how close in location from Charlottesville. There is plenty of downed wood to forage, a big fire pit, and plenty of room for tents. Also, we received plenty of hospitality from the hosts! Bob came out to greet us when we went up to the house for showers, and his family (including sweet doggos) is just so nice. Conserning the campsite itself, it is pristinely cared for. Even though it's down a slight slope of grass, we had no trouble getting in and out with our old fwd Kia Soul. That is, however, until it rained the last night for 10 hours. Getting out with the ground so soggy was a little tough, so I would recommend parking at the top of the hill if you expect storms and have a 2wd. It's only a short stroll to the campsite from there anyway, so it's a non issue. All in all we adored camping there and will certainly be back in the future!

Donkey and sheep and cows, oh my! Goats and horses and chickens, for sure! Not to mention the fish pond with dragonflies, butterflies and frogs! Site 4 is a very peaceful spot with a nice firepit - we didn’t want to use it because of the dry weather. We had horses for NEIGHbors and lots of fresh air! Directions were spot on and the signage is extremely helpful!

We had such an amazing stay at Hippie Hollow. You can tell Sly has put a ton of heart and hard work into this place. It’s beautiful, peaceful, and really comfortable. The creek running through the property just adds to the whole experience. The shared kitchen was great, and the people we met there were awesome. There’s a really good energy to the space. Sly was super helpful too, giving us recommendations for local restaurants and some incredible overlooks nearby. His dog Danby was a sweetheart. Not quite sure how he felt about our dog, but she definitely loved him. She may have been a little much for him.🤣 The bathhouse is spacious and clean. There’s a smaller one available now, and the larger one still under construction already looks like it’s going to be beautiful. Overall, just a great stay. Easy to find, welcoming, and a place we definitely plan to come back to and spend more time at.

1 acre campsite has a bathhouse with flushing toilet, mini outdoor kitchen, solar outdoor shower, tent pad, table for 8, firepit with grill and horseshoe pit.

Would 100% come back and plan to! Owners are extremely welcoming! Birdsong site was private, had great trail access to explore the property and see the animals, and had a very nice bathroom/kitchen sink/shower situation. The dog even paid us multiple visits which was a nice treat!
