Weekend Trip to 100 Acre Wood

100 Acre Wood is a beautiful site with an absolutely lovely host. David was kind enough to meet us at the house to show us the way to the campsite and even took us on a tour of the property, including the woodworking shop! The views of the mountains and the sunset from our tent was something that will bring me back over and over again. The property is well maintained, and there was plenty of firewood both provided and easy to find around the site itself. David sold me on the views of the Up Top campsite during the fall; I'm excited to come back around that time and see for myself!

My husband and I had an amazing time staying on Dave’s property. The property is absolutely stunning and Dave is nice enough to give you a tour if you’d like. We booked the up on top site but quickly learned it was going to be too hot without any tree coverage, and Dave was more than willing to allow us to move to the Bruington meadow which provided ample shade and it was much more comfortable! If you have the time take a drive to cascade falls (Dave’s suggestion) for one of the most breathtaking waterfalls and swimming holes. All in all it was an unforgettable holiday weekend and will absolutely be returning day.

We had a great experience at Hippie Hollow! We stayed in a pop up camper and had a great time! It’s a spacious camper near the restrooms which is super convenient. Nice restroom and shower, nothing big but definitely enough. The property and creek is absolutely beautiful. We loved getting to experience the ‘Why not Wednesday’ live music by the creek. Our kids, 9 and 10, had a great time swimming, running around, playing with the cats, and even some fishing. Jeremy was super friendly and accommodating as were the other campers. It’s a great little community camp spot. 10 out of 10 recommend!

Stayed two nights in my overlander trailer. Good location for a base camp to day hike Hanging Rock S.P. and Pilot Mountain. Reasonably close to Winston-Salem. Everything in HipCamp description is accurate. Good, flat, pull through area to park rig and nice, flat, large pad for one large tent. Probably tight to make turns for larger RV. All clean and orderly. Nice long-distance views. Good amenities (as described) -- plenty of room, fire pit and wood, two picnic tables, etc. "Poop shed" is just that (a shell of a porta john) but IS NOT a privy or outhouse. Some very minor road noise and farm animals, but not bothersome at all. I will definitely stay again for the purposes of my visit.

Hippy Hollow was a relaxed camp with a lively creek flowing in our backyard. We enjoyed talking with the host and other campers at the outdoor kitchen and watching the dogs, chickens, and ducks roam the grounds at their leisure. It's so close to Floyd and only a short drive from the Blue Ridge Parkway so exploring the area is easy. The honey wagon restroom on a trailer was so welcome - regular sink, shower, and flushing toilet (instead of the porta potty). Our site had an amazing lounge area with fire pit - we didn't use it because we were tired and it rained every night.

Although we are a primitive campground, we do offer amenities to make your stay comfortable, including portable toilets and trash collection. Jessup Mill

Hi there. Here is a little rundown of everything we do at the mill…. So, as far as camping, there are two main options on either side of the river; the mill yard or primitive camping across the river. In the mill yard, we do festival style camping, meaning that there are no individual campsites per se, but rather a large grassy lawn near the mill and bathhouse with shared fire pits, picnic tables, charcoal grill, and sinks for water/dishes. We also have two platforms up in the woods that are good for a little more privacy and are completely shaded, but do require a small climb up the hill. The bathhouse has three restrooms and hot showers in each. Across the river, there are several more primitive sites that are generally very private and offer great sounds coming from the river and waterfall, but no facilities. Most sites are car accessible, and a 5 minute walk back over to the mill (or a 1 minute drive). Lastly, our newest camping spot on the primitive side is a river front beach right by the dam with space for a several medium sized tents and a private fire pit. The beach is hike-in only (2-3 minutes along a mostly flat trail). Our normal rate is $10 per person per night. Firewood is available for $10 per wheelbarrow load. We accept cash, credit card, Venmo, Paypal, and crypto. We are also fairly flexible on check in/check out times, but just let us know if you’ll be arriving at odd hours. Dogs are generally welcome as long as they are kept on leash. Here is a little rundown of tubing at the mill (May-October, weather permitting). We have two tubing options available. We have a short Fun Run that takes roughly 45 minutes, and cost $10 per person for as many rides as you’d like. The river bends sharply like a horseshoe in this section, so it makes everything accessible by foot traffic. It’s a 3 minute walk up the trail to the dam, put in and float 30-45 minutes (depending on water level), then a 5-10 minute walk back to the mill carrying your tube. There is also the longer Forks Run, which last 3-4 hours (~2.5 river miles), and costs $15. For this, we shuttle you up the river in a vehicle, and you float back to the top of the dam, then 3 minutes walking back to the mill. Most weekends, tubing starts at 11 am and the last Forks Shuttle is around 3 pm, with the Fun Run staying open till around 5. Also, with enough heads up, we can sometimes arrange for trips during the week. Our tubes are required for each person floating for insurance and liability reasons, but you are welcome to bring your own cooler tubes to carry drinks and snacks. Technically, alcohol is not permitted on the river, but what is in your cooler is your business. Either way, please bring ALL trash out with you! Water shoes are recommended, and we have life jackets on request. Most of our tubes come with bottoms and back rests, but a few are open to the water. Most weekends, reservations are not required, but it does help tremendously if we know when you want to come and how many in your group. Lastly, check out a Facebook page for our occasional live music events and festivals!

Riverside Campground at Seneca

Learn more about this land: Fall asleep to hooting owls and the gentle ripple of the river and creek that flank your campsite. Wake up with a dip in the river or a morning hike in the woods. Feel the hug of the mountains throughout your stay, while also having access to Blacksburg nearby should you need it. DIRECTIONS: Upon entry the gravel road is shared with my neighbor and it is about 1.5 miles from the entry gate to the site. You'll enter thru a gate (it may be closed, if closed please close behind you as my neighbor sometimes has cows). Go approx 1 mile the road will split...go up the hill on the right. Continue past the Hay barn another half mile. Park on the left side of the gravel road along the tree line. Another 50ft you'll see a wood foot bridge across the creek. The sites are ahead, PawPaw is first, then Bloodroot Base Camp (bell tent), and lastly Cohosh Cove is the most private. Each site has a sign as well When driving, please be respectful of the right of way. Drive slowly and respect the farm equipment. Also please do not venture onto the neighbor’s property other than entry and exit. About the property 20 minutes from Blacksburg and 35 minutes from Roanoke, our campground gives you great access to the “Triple Crown” of the Appalachian trail, consisting of McAfee Knob, Tinker Cliffs, and Dragon’s Tooth. Conquer these iconic peaks of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains for spectacular views of the surrounding wilderness. Additionally, explore Falls Ridge Nature preserve, Cascades waterfall, and Carvin’s Cove for hiking, kayaking and mountain biking. Or just stay on the campground and enjoy the hiking and swimming we offer here. Nearby in Blacksburg take advantage of the local breweries or Virginia Tech football home games. You can also find Christmas tree cutting in Floyd county, 45mins away. This property deserves to be shared with others. It is peaceful and beautiful. As your Host, I am passionate about conservation and also teaching people about the medicinal uses of our local herbs. I can lead medicinal herb walks upon request for $25 a person. I typically try to meet the campers if I can upon arrival, I am available for questions and can be hands on or off as the needs of campers suggest. I have had campers ask if I wanted to share a beverage and sit around the fire and have done so. I want to make your experience as enjoyable as possible. I love the peacefulness the property offers, and that you’re in the middle of the wilderness but also have quick access to things in town. The river campsites are my favorite part of the property. At the main cabin I have goats and chickens which hipcampers are more than welcome to greet. About the listing Pitch your tents at the campsite nestled along the side of the mountain on the banks of the North Fork of the Roanoke River. As you fall asleep, listen to the occasional hoot of an owl, howl of a coyote, and gentle ripple of the river and creek that flank the campsite. Campers will have access to a private composting toilet, fire pit, and picnic table. We offer two different campsites on the property, so note that you may see or hear other campers on the grounds during your stay. 100 Acre Wood

101 Acres of forested land in the Draper, Virginia area with scattered clearings that are connected by over 2 miles of cleared roads and paths throughout the property, which are perfect for hiking, running, cycling, and horseback riding. The property includes a very small creek, several ravines, ridge lines and trails to explore. We frequently encounter deer, rabbits, squirrels, and the occasional turkey, black bear, coyotes and Bigfoot. The thing people seem to enjoy most is the privacy and and quiet that allows you to connect with nature. Each of the 3 sites is hundreds of yards away from each other. Note: there is no bathroom on the premises, however you can book a toilet tent as an extra. 4 Wheel Drive or All wheel drive are helpful during the winter months if there is snow/ice. Things to watch out for are deer ticks and poison ivy. Campers are expected to leave the site neat and take all their trash with them. We are located about 5 minutes from I-81 or 15 minutes from I-77 making it an easy place to stop when passing through on your way to other adventures. If you are coming on I-81, use exit 89-A. Don't let Google maps take you to Frog Level Ct near the town of Pulaski (LOL). Nearby attractions include Appalachian Gem and Gold Mine on Route 100 (5 min), New River Trail State Park (10 min), Claytor Lake State Park (20 min) and the Town of Draper has a couple small town shops to explore including The Draper Mercantile and Trading Company and the newly opened Conery where you can get wonderful ice cream cones and more. Also, check out the Draper Mountain overlook on Rt 11, just 10 minutes from our HipCamp. We love hosting campers and are happy to help make accommodations to help you have an enjoyable stay. We have 3 sites but only allow 2 to be in use at a time on the property. This insures that all guests continue to feel complete privacy from others and allows us to always have an alternate site available if campers want to change. Available "Extras" include portable toilet setup, Woodshop class making a cutting board, big foot siting's as well as various camping gear items and games. If there are other extra's you would like to see or something you forgot to bring please let us know and we will see what we can do.

Nestled on land that was once part of a sprawling 2,000-acre farm owned by the original Siamese twins, Eng and Chang Bunker, this privately owned RV park offers visitors a glimpse into a fascinating past while providing a peaceful retreat. Eng and Chang Bunker, along with their wives, Sarah and Adelaide, made their home in Mt. Airy, where they lived in separate residences, alternating between them every three nights. Renowned for its rare “fairy stones,” this forested park is hemmed in by the fabled peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Immerse yourself in Elvin legends on a guided ranger walk or head down to the Staurolite Hunt Site to scavenge for your own fairy stones (yes, they do exist!). Once you’ve had your fill of magic, simple pleasures await at Fairy Stone Lake. Paddle in a rowboat, SUP, or kayak; sink your toes into the sand at the swimming beach; or fish for bass and trout. Fairy Stone State Park Campground has cabins, yurts, tent/RV sites, and equestrian sites.

Tips for snagging a campsite

You can reserve campsites, cabins, and yurts online, Minimum stays are in place for cabin rentals.
Campsite and cabin reservations open 11 months in advance and must be made one day before arrival.
Campsites book up fast on summer and holiday weekends. Book a minimum of three months in advance to snag a spot.

When to go

Activities are seasonal at Fairy Stone State Park. The swimming beach opens from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, while the lake is stocked with trout in October, making winter one of the best times to fish. Hiking and horseback riding are possible year-round, weather depending. Camping season runs from early March through early December, while cabins are available year-round.

Fairy Stone State Park is set about 90 minutes north of Winston-Salem by car.
Day-use parking fees and camping reservation fees are charged at Fairy Stone. State fishing licenses and equestrian permits are also required, and a daily fee for swimming pool access applies (this is included for campers).
Facilities include a conference center, swimming beach, restrooms, and picnic areas. Cell phone service is unreliable throughout the park.
