This is great option for those who like to bring all their own gear to camp, and don’t need or want all the extras. Our new Primitive Adventures campsites are located on an established 5-star property. It’s a peaceful, secluded and private country estate. The 20 acre property starts out flat and then gentle to moderate sloped hillside with coastal live oak trees, eucalyptus trees, pine trees, meadows and many interesting landscape features nestled between the vast farmlands of North Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties.
We are 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The weather is usually mild here and we have cool evenings. We do get days that are in the 90s sometimes in the summer and early fall, but we also have lots of shade with all the trees. There is wildlife like deer, turkeys and owls and so much more. We have horses and a donkey, separate from the campsites, so no flies or smell from them. We provide one hot water shower and there are 3 outhouse style toilets on the grounds.
There is NO running water at the sites so we suggest you bring your own drinking water. There will be limited water provided for hand/dish washing.
We are a pack it in/pack it out campground so please, be mindful of waste as we ask that you take it out with you. We do not have dumpsters/trash service on site so please be mindful of this when packing and booking.
You may forage for plentiful eucalyptus and oak firewood for free, or pre-cut pine is available for purchase. Most of our weekends are fully booked at our Rustic Campsites already, so here is another chance to have yourself a weekend camping trip at our new Primitive Adventures campsites. It really is a beautiful and wonderful property. There is wildlife, and it is private and peaceful. It is very dark at night and the view of the stars, moon, and planets is amazing.
There is poison oak on the property so please be aware. We will show you what it looks like, so you can easily avoid it.

A no noise policy by the county occurs at 9 pm. Due to a high risk fire zone, no open fires (small camp stoves are ok). Due to the proximity of the tents right next to Vega Rd, sounds from vehicles can be heard. We are situated in a rural neighborhood setting, with sounds of sheep, goats, chickens, wild turkeys, dogs and many birds nestled between both counties. The terrain is hilly with a few gopher holes. Staying on paths limits poison oak exposure. While respecting your privacy, we can be seen improving the property.

Hollister Hills State Vehicle Recreation Area (SVRA) is California State Parks’ first SVRA. Located in the Gabilan Mountains, just an hour’s drive south from San Jose, this unique SVRA features over 6,800 acres of scenic and varied terrain. Visitors are drawn to the natural beauty of the park’s oak woodlands, rolling hills, lush canyons, and seasonal creeks with elevations ranging from 660 feet to 2,425 feet. Hollister Hills SVRA offers numerous off-highway vehicle (OHV) opportunities as well as designated hiking, bicycling, and equestrian trails.
The park straddles the San Andreas Fault. The North American tectonic plate (North East side) consists of clay-rich adobe soil with rolling hills covered in grassland and oak woodlands. The Pacific tectonic plate (South West) consists of granitic soil with steeper terrain with pine, sage, and chaparral taking root in the sandy soil. The Pacific and North American tectonic plates have been sliding past each other for 30 million years at a current rate of about 1.5 inches per year. Howard Harris created the foundation of what today is known as Hollister Hills SVRA. Howard’s great grandfather, Jesse Whitton, was a civilian surveyor for the John C. Fremont expedition that traveled through the area in 1846. After the expedition, Jesse Whitton returned to the area and successfully purchased 600 acres for $50 per acre. The land was passed on through the family and finally to Howard Harris in 1959, who became the last private owner of the property. In the following years, Howard purchased more of the surrounding properties and built many of the park’s trails and roads. He used the land for a number of activities including mining, farming, ranching, hunting, scientific studies, and OHV recreation.
OHVs were first used on the ranch in 1947 when Howard established the Bird Creek Hunting Club. Jeeps, motorcycles, and “tote-goats” were used for transportation to get around the ranch. During the 1950s, private OHV activities were held and by 1970, the ranch was officially opened for public OHV recreation. Howard managed the land as a motorcycle park until October 1, 1975, when the land was sold to the State of California and became Hollister Hills SVRA.

This campground just god a major uplift. This used to be called Feel Good Camp and now we dedicate it to the natural green building and clean living. There were many beautiful hands put their energies into each cobbin here and we built it with Love, charities and your comfort in mind!
We made our decision based on our love to create an inspiration for arts and creating beautiful buildings using materials that you can find around you such as pallets, clay, sands, straws, etc. Everything is made out of non toxic materials, we even made our own paint out of cooking flours!
Being inside these cob buildings feels like being in the womb of Mother Earth: the scent, the calm, the grounding, etc. The woods come from one of our properties and we milled them ourselves. We upcycle almost everything: The tree barks, the branches, even the furnitures were secured from non-profit organizations. We'd like you to come to be inspired! One of the buildings is there as a demonstration site till its done and we'll have the cob builder to be there to show you around. Cob working party is held by a master cob builder.
We made your Camping and Glamping experience easy. We provide clean showers, restrooms, toilet paper, paper towels, barbecue, fridge, freezer, popcorn kettles, , utensils, plates, bowls, mugs, coffee maker, pots and pans, cutleries, etc. Yes, there is hot water as well with no coins needed.
The campground is located in a serene oak grove area of the property. Its a peaceful getaway with an abundance of bird varieties and occasional wild turkeys passing through. Take a stroll around our 5-acre property and catch a breathtaking sunset from the hillside.
The amenities are: Outdoor kitchen, 2 fire pits, outdoor showers and bathrooms, electricity in each cobin, Board games, Yard Games, dog park and an outdoor library for little ones to grown ups. In Winter 2026 we'll add sauna and outdoor tubs for warm winter experience.

We stayed one night at 10000 Ranch in our 24-foot RV after booking very late in the evening when we could not secure a campsite near Big Sur. I am thankful that Edward accepted our last-minute reservation and communicated clearly. His PDF guide was helpful, although the directions and site markings could be improved, especially for guests arriving after dark.
The roads inside the ranch were narrow and unpaved, with a few low tree branches that brushed against the RV. The site itself was level, spacious, and peaceful, but it required backing in. Finding the exact parking spot and the bathroom keypad in the dark was difficult. A brighter sign or clearly marked keypad would make arrival much easier.
There were no RV hookups, which was clearly mentioned in the listing and was as expected. The garage bathroom had electricity, but there were several insects inside. Wi-Fi was available but spotty, although mobile data worked well.
The best part of the stay was how quiet and serene the location was. We woke up to a beautiful sunrise with horses in the background, and there was no noticeable noise at night. The dirt road was solid to drive on, though it created some dust.
At around $60 for the night, I felt the stay was worth it. With better nighttime markings, stronger Wi-Fi, and improved bathroom cleanliness, this could be a top-notch overnight RV stop. Overall, a peaceful and valuable stay. 4/5.

3 nights at Sacred Owl Land
My husband and I really enjoyed our stay! The drive up to the location is beautiful and secluded. You are at the top of a hill, so the panoramic view is stunning. We stayed in a cabana, and it was small but did the job. Your view is breathtaking as you're tucked in the woods without other guests in sight.
I will say it felt odd to be exposed at night, with large windows without curtains, but that is the magic of the place. The cabana does get hot since it's largely made of big windows, so if you're not a fan of heat, a callout.
The hosts were welcoming and gave us a tour of the grounds.

2 nights at Fern Ridge Camper
What a lovely vintage camper! It's super charming, with original wood paneling and hardware. The outside area is lovely and super private—fenced off and quite separate from the rest of the property, and overlooking a really beautiful forested vista with lots of birds. Matt has created a really wonderful space! I really appreciated that the camper had nice, warm electric lights, a live outlet for charging, a French press for making coffee, and a super comfy bed. The property is in the gorgeous mountains above adorable Aptos village (about a 10-minute drive into town; 15-ish minutes to lovely beaches). It's a narrow windy road, so it's a good idea to arrive with some daylight, and the bathroom setup is a backcountry-style toilet (pack it). The only other good things to note ahead of your stay are to bring potable water or a filter, as the running water in the camper sink needs to be purified, and the original vintage icebox is non-electric, so you'll need ice inside it or a cooler to keep things cold. Matt was a super responsive and kind host; check-in was easy; Matt's directions to the property were very clear, and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay!

I had a wonderful stay at Vega Vortex! The hosts were incredibly kind, welcoming, and made me feel right at home from the moment I arrived. The campsite was peaceful, clean, and thoughtfully maintained, with beautiful gardens and a relaxing atmosphere.
The outdoor shower and composting toilet were both clean and well cared for. You can tell the hosts put a lot of thought and effort into creating a comfortable experience for their guests.
Although the campsite is in Watsonville, it’s only about a 30-minute drive to Santa Cruz, which made it a great home base for exploring the area while still enjoying a quiet retreat away from the crowds.
I really enjoyed my stay and would happily come back. I highly recommend Vega Vortex to anyone looking for a peaceful camping experience with friendly hosts and a great location.

Loved staying at the Hobbit Hideout! This a beautiful gem of a place to stay at to unwind. Met the host Yeyen who was so welcoming and made us feel at home.
The Cobbins are one of a kind! The communal kitchen is really well stocked. Bathrooms and showers are clean. All brought together in a very aesthetically pleasing way!
Will visit again and highly recommend!!

We had a great stay at this small campsite on Edward’s property. The campsite was peaceful, and having access to a clean toilet and shower in his garage was very convenient and much appreciated.
The only downside was that there was a party in the neighborhood with loud music that continued until after 2 a.m., which made it difficult to sleep. This was outside the host’s control, but if the area had been quieter, the experience would have been even better.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to anyone looking for a simple, well-maintained campsite.

We had such a relaxing stay at Mi Querida. The site lives up to its name - quiet, private, and exactly the kind of stress-free escape we needed, even though it's such an easy drive from the Bay Area.
The gas fireplace was a wonderful touch once the temperature dropped at night, and we really appreciated having it.
But the real highlight of the trip was Daisy and Hannah! Our kids loved every minute of feeding them carrots and petting them. They're incredibly gentle and so good with children. It made the whole trip feel special, and honestly, our kids are already asking when we can go back to visit them again.
The setting is beautiful and calm, and we left feeling genuinely rested. We'd absolutely return, this felt like a true home base for unwinding, and the animals alone are worth the trip. Highly recommend for families looking for a peaceful, easy retreat close to home.

Safe relaxing space. Free ranging goats, turkeys and dogs, all friendly, added to the peaceful nature of this place. We only needed a hot shower and nice place to sleep each night as we were up and out early and back late, So this worked well for us. Ani was a very responsive host. Bradly greeted us when we arrived and pointed out what we needed to know. You are guests on their land and we felt welcomed and they respected our privacy. Their WiFi worked great.
Side note: I didn’t know goats had such a vocal range! We were entertained.

Melissa’s tree house was so cute! Beautiful views right near a creek. It’s definitely small and cozy, but it is well stocked! Melissa was a very responsive host and even had a little sweet treat waiting for us at our arrival. I would definitely stay here again!

From the moment we arrived, this place felt like a total sanctuary. The property itself is stunning—the terraced layout and beautiful hidden corners invite you to just relax and recharge.
Our stay was exceptionally comfortable, and we really appreciated having access to an incredibly clean shower and restroom with hot water.
But what truly makes this place special is the incredible hospitality. Mona and Thaddeus are exceptional hosts who are genuinely friendly, helpful, and attentive to your well-being. It’s clear how much thought and dedication they put into maintaining this unique environment, and we especially loved the thoughtful gifts we received upon our arrival.
We were only able to stay for one night, but if we could have, we would have stayed much longer. We left feeling completely refreshed and so grateful for the experience.
