About the Property
Just off the Appalachian tail, five minutes from Dragon's Tooth trailhead and 10 minutes from McAfee's Knob, you'll be able to find plenty of hiking and nature to take in. TONS of killer single-track mountain biking around the area, including some nice trails on our property. We are very close to the North Mountain trail system, not far from Carvins Cove. These areas also offer amazing swimming and tubing.
This area is paradise for road cyclists as well. Our country road is long, scenic, very little traffic, and the grade is almost imperceptible. Lots of similarly scenic back roads in the vicinity, easy to map out a loop according to your preferences.
We are located ~35 minutes from Roanoke and ~45 minutes from Blacksburg. While I provide some bottled water for campers, bringing in your own is always a good idea as I do not offer a way to refill water containers.
About the listing
Tucked away at the base of a huge meadow, under an ancient walnut tree, pitch your tent on the edge of a mature hardwood forest floodplain, with sweeping views of the valley, and enjoy the sounds of Craig's Creek flowing just behind you. The creek is filled with lots of bluegills, etc. and some trout, and we're very close to a lot of really great trout streams. We're blessed with a beautiful swimming hole fed by the cool clean creek, which gets to about 6 feet in depth, maybe a 3 minute walk from the campsite.
We can provide tubes, floats, etc.
For meals, we provide a charcoal grill and a grill grate for cooking over a fire. There is also a picnic table at the site.
Well-behaved dogs and other pets are always welcome, but please keep them under close supervision.
While you have privacy at your site, expect to run into other campers in common areas or in passing. We like to greet folks when they arrive and show them to their site, and someone is typically here at the house should you need anything.

Our internet is pretty decent for such a rural area, and while it won't extend all the way to the campsites, we can make it available to you if you should need it. Just come up to the house, get the password from us, and you can sit at a picnic table outside the house to use your device. Check off those last items you didn't get to before leaving off your to-do list so you can get back to enjoying the outdoors worry-free.

Ended up staying at Maple Knoll since there was a tree at Walnut Bottom that Ned needed to process. Both are great sites, but we really enjoyed Maple Knoll. Ned was a very gracious and friendly host. He met us on arrival and gave a detailed tour. Highly recommend Maple Knoll and Savage Farms.
One of my favorites on hipcamp! I’ve been back 3 times already. I will be back for a forth before no time.
It was a lovely secluded spot but not too remote. I loved staying there rather than staying at a public campground and it was SO CLOSE to great hiking! After every hike we went and swam in the fresh spring swimming hole and it was so divine. Most of all it was a spot that felt safe for three women to camp. I really really appreciate that!
Ned is a very helpful and kind host. He answered all my questions in a timely manner even while on vacation himself. However, we chose not to stay at his Walnut Bottom campsite because the site wasn't what we were looking for that evening.
Granted, it was labor day weekend, there was a large group at the Maple Knoll site and it was dusk when we arrived. We were a little stressed out by our dog who is a horrible traveller and the site was just dirt. The trash and recycling receptacles were full and there was trash in the fire ring.
Seeing that Ned was on vacation himself that weekend and not on site to oversee his camp I'm going to cut him some slack and may try and secure the Maple Knoll site or the River site at another time, not a holiday weekend. I just wouldn't reserve the Walnut Bottom site again.
Everyone has their own wants and needs when looking for a campsite. However, for us, on this particular day we just chose to go somewhere else. Again, we may try one of the other site's on Ned's farm we just won't book Walnut Bottom again.

This was a gorgeous spot on Craig Creek. Actually one of the most beautiful bends of the river with towering shale cliffs I’ve ever been to. Sky out here is unabated with light pollution so starry skies are astounding at night. Plenty of fishing and swimming holes brimming with smallmouth bass, sunfish, and redeye.
The camping area is vast and semi-private, plenty of room if with a larger group. The spots are spaced out far enough (100 yards or so) that you may barely see or hear the other campsite across the field. The namesake Walnut tree is truly a blessing of shade and fallen branches are everywhere in the surrounding forrest to help start a fire. The only recommendation I have is for the portable pit toilets to be cleaned more often, and possible better signage at the pull-in. GPS was no issue but the entrance is an unassuming entrance to a field (maybe it’s better kept a secret that way). Thank you to Ned and Alexis for sharing this stunning property!
The campsite was really cool! We had a meadow and Mountain View, and could hear the trickling of the creek from our site. The walnut bottom site was a bit muddy due to some recent rain, we didn’t mind but something to be aware of! Our pup loved swimming in the creek and chasing toads. Ned was very accommodating. Would definitely recommend this spot for some dope hiking on the AT!
