A 46 acre off grid communitiy nestled within an established food forest. A mile of trails, a creek/pond, established agroforestry plantings and multiple examples of tiny homes and natural buildings dot the landscape. All within the context of a mature and established forest. The camping sites are private and removed from the bustle of the farm. History: the farm was started in 1997. Matt Van Boven (your host and the owner) started on raw land and built all of the infrastructure with the help of many interns over the years. Every edible plant that could be grown here has been trialed. No irrigation, fertilizer, or cultivation is used on the farm. Only the most resilient and adapted plants remain to this day. These include hundreds of nut and fruit trees as well as many perennial edibles. Much of the forest, itself has been managed with thousands of cedar trees planted among the existing vegetation. Besides the plantings, all manner of natural buildings are represented. Cordwood and cob being a few of the methods explored. The farm has a collection of tiny homes that surround a core of utilitarian structures and provide housing to an eclectic bunch of forest folk. The land is uniquely situated on the confluence of two major rivers (the Sauk and the Skagit). The creek is an old river channel that is now abandoned. A couple sit-on-top kayaks are available to use to explore. For the adventurous, a trail carries on from the creek to the river itself. The trail system is a labor of love crafted over the last 20 years. Almost a mile of manicured trails weave their way around the plantings and forest. The trees are almost 100 years old with some very large specimens of both maple and cedar. The farm is completely off grid and has been so since its inception. Working with limited means has been a theme in the design and development. Living in a more ecological way has been a major inspiration for us and we hope that you, as a guest, not only have an enjoyable stay but also leave inspired to change your life in a similar direction!

This is a hidden gem! This is waterfront on the river where you can relax, play in the river with your own beach for your stay. It's a Very beautiful private open RV and Trailer Site on the Skagit River. I have currently owned the property for 10 or so years. This is one of my happy places to bring friends and family and relax. This is where we get our river therapy. Nothing better than sitting by the camp fire watching the river flow and listening to the nature. There is a nice big fire pit as well as a log picnic table. Lots of room to lounge around and enjoy the peace and quiet. Watch the eagle and fish on the river as you sit by the campfire. Kayak down the river from RockPort bridge and pull out right at camp. It's about a two and half hour float down with a Kayak right to camp. Close drive to Baker Lake for the day to hike or sight see. An hour or so away from North Cascade Hwy passes. Or if you feel like a drive, head to Winthrop for the day and walk the town. Fishing can be done right at the site or a short walk to the point. Check the fishing regulations for the time of year you want to fish.

One of the biggest benefits of staying at Whirlywind was not having to pack, haul, set up, and tear down all of our own camping equipment. It allowed us to spend more time enjoying the beautiful river and surroundings and less time worrying about the work that comes with camping. (the camping rule “leave it better then you found it” was easy when it was all so clean and organized to begin with) Pathfinder’s Sanctuary sites lack nothing and our spot was exactly what we needed for a stress-free getaway. We would absolutely recommend any of Jeremy’s sites to anyone who wants the fun of camping without all the hassle! Jeremy was extremely friendly, available and quick to answer any questions we had. We’ll definitely be back!

2 nights at Sauk Mountain Hideaway

We stayed here for two nights near the end of our 2 week camping roadtrip around Washington. I enjoyed the privacy of the site and that there weren’t any other campsites nearby so my husband and I could chill out in nature undisturbed, When we arrived there was a cute little basket for us with bug spray, ear plugs, granola bars, and a trash bag. There were pros and cons to the location. Only 45 minutes from Diablo Lake view point and great hiking which was the major sell for us, but not much for ways of a town nearby. Concrete did have a great one bar with a pool table, and a really yummy Indian restaurant but besides that we just hung at the campsite the entire time.

This is my first time camping at Reed’s property and it was really wonderful! The site is super private, which I love especially having a dog who doesn’t love being around a lot of people! It’s a great location to be able to spend the day at and also super close to so many great hikes and adventures around depending on what you’re looking for! One thing I really appreciated was as a solo female camper I felt super safe! I had a friend come and spend one night of my trip and Reed double checked with me to make sure that the extra vehicle he saw parked at the camp was with me, which just made me feel like someone was looking out for me knowing I was there by myself. It really meant a lot! I definitely look forward to going there again for future stays!

Probably one of the most glamorous camping experiences. It’s a bit of a walk from the parking lot to the campsite but well worth it and made easy with the supplied wagon. The misty Mountain View campsite was a beautiful setting, just one other campsite visible from our site but barely could hear them. Such a serene spot right on the river. Jeremy was super informative and responsive, he couldn’t have been a better host. The campsite was stocked with more than I could have prepared, they really thought of everything.

We stayed in site 17, lovely view of river and mountains, peaceful, slept to the sound of the river. Walk in sites involved sandy terrain, so have to be able to navigate with a pullalong cart. Potable water available at the greenhouse. Several lovely Adirondack chairs at the beach were a bonus! Pallet table was great for cooking on, bring a small table if you want to play cards. Very well maintained camp ground with a very friendly host. Only one other group was there so it was a very quiet weekend. The lake is also very quiet with kayaks and paddle boats available for anyone to use.

We had a great time on Reed’s property! This is our second time staying here, this time we brought friends. The host provides a few amenities, including a large picnic table, canopy and a clean bathroom. Very spacious and private site, the river is beautiful, perfect for a midday cool off, our pup loves it here too, would highly recommend!

Stayed in site 4 and it was wonderful! Beautiful view, nice even spot with soft packed sand. And the bathrooms / outdoor heated shower were LUXURIOUS! Looooved our two night stay here. Met the host and she was also so incredibly kind and welcoming. 10/10!

Great base camp for exploring the north cascades area. The site has more space than I anticipated. We had a six person and two person tent and plenty of space for another tent. The site is nestled into beautiful mossy woods. There is a space to set up your hammock. Port a potty was freshly cleaned. Noise from traffic at night was not a bother while wearing earplugs. A few mosquitos only at night - no bother when using bug spray.

It’s easy to feel small in Rockport State Park, where a 250-foot tall forest canopy of red cedars, Douglas firs, and maples envelopes you in a lush, sun-dappled green wonderland. And the forest isn’t just impressive for its height—this unlogged stand has trees up to 600 years old. The park’s shorter hikes, past all matter of fungi and ferns, are perfect for little legs, while the nearby 4.2-mile Sauk Mountain Trail climbs to the 5,537-foot summit. Despite its distance from the ocean, this is an important habitat for salmon, and rearing ponds can be viewed at nearby Marble Mountain. Due to dangerous trees in the park, there is currently no camping available at Rockport State Park.

When to go

While the relatively low elevation of Rockport State Park (750 feet) means that it is hikeable year-round, the shoulder seasons are your best bet for warmer temps without the crowds. They offer their own delights as well: spring brings wildflowers like trillium as well as salmon berries and huckleberries for snacking, while the misty days of fall see an explosion of mushrooms on the forest floor. While this park is less-visited than others on Highway 20, summer visitors can expect to hear some noise from the highway during their stay.

Know before you go

Habitat fragmentation and root rot have destabilized many of the park's trees, leading to the campground’s closure in 2007.
Camping is available year-round at nearby Howard Miller Steelhead Park (1 mile east) and Rasar State Park (15 miles west).
The 1-mile West Loop Trail is ADA-compliant.
A Discover Pass is required to park at Rockport State Park.
Highway 20 closes each winter due to snow, and its opening varies by year.
