The Mountain Top @Wright's Farm

5 sites · RVs, Tents450 acres · Gardiner , Ulster
It all started when grandfather Charles B Wright first establish this farm in 1904. He purchased it for its natural springs. In our barn (now home to Gardiner Brewing Company) he had gravity fed water troughs for his cattle. Since then we have slowly switched from animals to tree fruit. You will enjoy rolling hills of fruit trees and fruit gardens along with beautiful views of the Shawangunk Mountain Ridge. We have 450+ acres so it in very private. As we are a working farm, you can see us driving pass with our tractors or maintaining the orchard around your campsite on occasion. You are welcome to ride your bikes, hike or jog where you will pass ponds and a working farm landscape. Please don’t pick our fruit. If you would like to enjoy the fruits of our labor please visit our farm store open year round on the premises where we sell cheeses, our fresh picked fruit and veggies, local meats, and our famous cider donuts along with other farm products. We also have a farm brewery open 3-7 in our old dairy barn for you to enjoy. Live music Saturdays and Sundays. Minnewaska State Park and Mohonk Reserve are only 10 minutes away. The rail trail is three minutes away. This trail gives you walking and biking access into New Paltz, where there is tons of restaurants and lots of shopping. Please be aware that during the months of September and October there may be a Pick-Your-Own customer or two walking around picking apples around the campsite area between the hours of 10:00-6:00. You are also welcome to come down to the farm market and purchase bags to pick your own apples in season.

Off-Grid Catskills

4 sites · Lodging7 acres · Rockland, Sullivan
a largely off-the-grid, truly unique, 420-friendly cabin and YURT in beautiful Livingston Manor. A ‘tiny house’ with every conceivable amenity—full kitchen, hot shower, indoor toilet, woodstove, spacious living room, enormous sleeping loft, speakers for your music, excellent wi-fi—thoughtfully arranged to maximize space and ease of use. The house is at the end of a shale road on a blueberry orchard. Guests are invited to pick all the fruit they like. The hillside’s high elevation provides an oasis of cooler temperatures during every summer heat wave. The panoramic view of the Catskills from the front porch has to be seen to be appreciated. across the property, smack in the middle of the blueberry bushes, is the latest addition to our eco-getaway: a YURT. It’s a slightly larger tiny house, albeit a round one with walls of cloth instead of wood. Like the cabin, the YURT has a full kitchen, hot shower, indoor toilet, woodstove, etc. If glamping is your thing, come and spend a night or two under the stars while sleeping indoors. while the setting is delightfully off the beaten path, it’s also a short drive to the cafés, breweries, and eateries in the charming hamlet of Livingston Manor. World class hiking, swimming, camping, and fishing is even closer. (Camping and hiking gear provided.) perhaps most importantly, our place offers more than a getaway. Guests learn how hygienic a composting toilet is, how easily a spring provides water for one’s home, the joys of heating with wood, etc. A few days on the blueberry patch is both a rewarding glimpse of the sustainable life and an invaluable education in how comfortable a small house can be. If you’re considering procuring your own, spending time in one of ours will help you decide if such a home is right for you.

Hudson Valley River Camp

8 sites · RVs, Tents80 acres · Watchtower, Ulster
You've discovered secluded riverfront camping that feels like the middle of nowhere without actually being in the middle of nowhere. Our property offers minimal impact campsites on a bird sanctuary in southeastern Catskills/northwestern Hudson Valley that's less than two hours from New York City. Your camping fee helps protect this beautiful property from development. We're 15 minutes to Minnewaska State Park and Mohonk Preserve, 20 minutes to Sam's Point and New Paltz and 12 minutes to Angry Orchard. There's no wi-fi but we have great cell service. The most unique aspect of this property is that it offers easy access to seclusion and privacy. Enjoy the healing effect of quiet in nature without crowds of fellow campers. Hudson Valley River Camp is located on the unique 80-acre Boria Sax Bird Sanctuary just outside of Pine Bush, New York. With only four minimal-impact campsites along the Shawangunk Kill and Dwaar Kill, our goal is for you to escape civilization and pause to enjoy the song of birds, gurgling creeks and wind in the trees. We also offer one wooded car camping/RV style site. Each campsite (except the RV site) is within view of the water and includes a stone fire ring. Along with local firewood from downed trees, split firewood bundles are available at minimal cost. The Wooded RV site has access to water and all hiking trails. The hike to all of the other campsite from the parking area varies depending on which site you choose. We highly recommend simple backpacking. This makes the hike in much more enjoyable and you'll find you need less than you think. A shared trail crosses the smaller Dwaar Kill via a basic bridge or by wading the shallow water. From there you will access your campsite via a private trail. The Shawangunk Kill, a protected tributary of the Wallkill River, is unusually clean and supports a variety of wildlife The entire property is ideal for naturalists or bird watchers who appreciate the earth and share the goal of keeping it pristine for future generations to enjoy. Wildlife found on the property includes white-tailed deer, red foxes, muskrats and mink. Bald eagles nest within view of the property and use the river as a thoroughfare. Depending on the time of year, you could also see bluebirds, downy woodpeckers, cardinals, chickadees, wrens, nuthatches, red-tailed hawks, and merganser ducks. Wood ducks and pileated woodpeckers compete for nesting holes in the American Sycamore trees near the confluence of the two rivers. You're likely not going to run into other people except for a few fellow campers and birdwatchers on the shared trail. You will feel like it is just you and the trees. No motorized vehicles or bicycles are allowed. To keep this land pristine, we strictly abide by the "carry in, carry out" rule. We provide a portable toilet at each campsite with a new biodegradable bag that you take with you when you leave. We also ask that no ax, hatchet, or saw of any kind be used to chop or damage trees. However, small dry sticks can be used to start a fire.

Camping in New York with campfires guide

New York state is made for outdoor adventures, whether you're hiking in the Finger Lakes, glamping amid Hudson Valley vineyards, or backcountry camping in the Adirondacks. Campers can take their pick of 180 New York state parks, 22 national park sites, and a national forest, almost all of which provide RV sites and tent camping—some also have cabin rentals and glamping options. June through August is peak camping season in Upstate New York, and camping reservations are essential through fall, too. November through March is ski season, and many RV parks and cabins stay open year-round.

Where to Go

New York City & Long Island

When the temperatures rise in summer, New York campers make a beeline for the sandy shores of Long Island. Beach camping experiences abound on the island, both along the Atlantic Coast and the North Shore. Check into one of the coastal RV parks, camp at one of the many country parks, or head to the beachside campgrounds at Hither Hills State Park or Wildwood State Park.

Hudson Valley & the Catskills

Vineyards and heritage towns dot the banks of the Hudson River, north of NYC, stretching all the way up to the Catskills Mountains. There’s lakeside camping within an hour’s drive of the city at Harriman State Park, kayak-in tent sites at Hudson River Islands State Park, and a popular campground at Bear Mountain State Park. For keen hikers, some of the best camping and glamping is found in the vast Catskill Forest Preserve.

Saratoga & Adirondacks

To escape the crowds and explore the wilderness, continue north into the Adirondacks, where the soaring mountains and wild woodlands stretch across more than 6 million acres. Epic hikes, fall foliage views, and idyllic lakes await campers, whether you prefer a hike-in tent site or a cozy log cabin in the woods. Don’t fancy hiking? Try whitewater rafting along the Ausable River, go canoeing between the three Saranac Lakes, or enjoy boating on Lake George.

Central New York & the Finger Lakes

For tranquil lakeside camping, the Finger Lakes get our vote. Regional highlights include the Gorge Trail at Watkins Glen State Park, the beaches and waterfalls of Buttermilk Falls State Park, and the "Grand Canyon of the East" at Letchworth State Park, but you can also fill your camping trip with wine tasting, farm-to-table restaurants, and lake activities.

Western New York

More than 65,000 acres of mountains, forest, and lakes make up the vast Allegany State Park, where you can choose from four state campgrounds or book one of the many cabins. Further north, there’s beachside camping along the shores of Lake Ontario, while Four Mile Creek State Park is one of three western New York state parks to offer yurt rentals. An added bonus? It’s within a 15-minute drive of Niagara Falls.
