On the day of arrival, you will receive another message to refresh your knowledge of how to use the campervan. Close to the beach and sand, the city offers activities nearby so you won't have to go far to enjoy them. Great spot to park to explore West Haven. We had 3 nights with electric hook up and a water supply. The train station is 10 minute drive and we got the direct train into NYC within 2 hours. Walking to Riva along the beach front is highly recommended, fantastic bar. Various food, drinks, ice cream, live bands and huge screens for sports

“I had an amazing time at this campaign spot! It was exceptionally clean, and the view of the river was just breathtaking. Despite there being a lot of people, it stayed really peaceful and quiet. The facilities were well designed especially the shower s although the water was really cold, so I’d recommend showering in the afternoon rather than early or late. I’d definitely come back and recommend it to anyone looking for a beautiful relaxing riverside escape.

This campground is perfect and not described too well in many reviews I read online. There are several port-a-potties and they are the cleanest ones I’ve ever seen. Near the bathrooms there is a handwashing station with real soap and water. There are also several water stations and none of the campsites are very far from water at all. The outdoor shower is also nice. There is a camp security guard that camps there too. I was a solo camper with my cats and I have zero complaints. I felt perfectly safe. It was a beautiful site. Will be back for sure. Tyler also comes around several times a day to check on people and sells firewood. This exceeded my expectations.

Our group had a great time camping here! It was conveniently located and the amenities (shower, running water near every site, porta potties) were great for those of us who don’t necessarily want to “rough it.” The campsites are pretty close to each other so be prepared to hear your neighbors (especially early in the morning) but it wasn’t too. Would recommend and plan on coming back!

Very happy with this camp site. Clean and well kept. Tyler met us and was very friendly and professional. He made sure everything was ok with us. I highly recommend this place. Every one had enough space between each campsite.

2 nights at Peconic River Campgrounds

Great local camping spot for a few nights in tent/overland/small-camper. Direct water access for fresh water fishing. Clean porto-potties, hand wash station, fire-rings, water hose & rustic outdoor shower. Open spots are first come, first served. Call Tyler upon arrival and he stops by to check-in, he has fire wood if you need any. Yes, it can get buggy, but it’s camping, so be prepared with tick and mosquito spray!

About

Lying on the shore of the Great South Bay on Long Island, Heckscher State Park’s 1,600 acres are the setting for a number of outdoor activities, from picnicking and field sports on its large open fields, to hiking and biking along multi-use trails and spotting a variety of wildlife, including whitetail deer and various species of bird. Additionally, visitors can swim, boat, and kayak in the Great South Bay. The park has 67 campsites that are open from mid-May to early September and suitable for tents, trailers, and RVs.

Tips for snagging a campsite

Bookings can easily be secured online or by phone, up to nine months in advance.
Reservations are not required but are encouraged, especially in summer.
Check your dates: A steep cancelation fee is charged for bookings canceled within seven days (on top of a non-refundable reservation fee).

When to go

Summer is by far the busiest season in Heckscher State Park and its surroundings. If visiting in summer, it’s a good idea to make reservations in advance and try to arrive early to avoid crowds, particularly on weekends and holidays. Visiting in spring or fall offers a quieter experience. Winters are crowd-free and offer activities such as snowshoeing.

Know before you go

You’ll find plenty of grocery stores in East Islip, within a 10-minute drive.
Two campsites are accessible, as are all pavilions.
Dogs are only permitted on nature trails located in the undeveloped areas of the park, not in the campground.
