If you’re not ready to lose yourself (and your cell service) fully in the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota, get the best of the wilderness on the southern outskirts at Two Inlets State Forest. Here you can spend the day hiking trails into Itasca State Park, fishing and hunting the area’s game, or swimming and canoeing on Cedar Lake, Hungryman Lake, or Two Inlets Lake (all have boat access, too). If you can’t live without wi-fi, or just want a break from roughin’ it, stop into one of the many resort lodges bordering Two Inlets Lake—Two Inlets Resort has great snacks and a game room complete with pool table, so why not make some new friends and start a tourney? Alternately, you can grab some of the famous Minnesota-harvested wild rice from nearby White Earth Reservation and cook it up over a fire at your campsite (both options will be delicious).
