Discover the most magical spots to pitch your tent or park your rig on your next Grand Portage State Forest adventure.

To get to Minnesota’s Grand Portage State Forest, just hop in the car and start driving northeast. Keep going. Up, up a little bit further. And then stop right before you hit the Canadian border. You’re there! Now step out of the car and take a deep breath of that refreshing air you can only get in the remote wilderness. While you’re at it, take in the surrounding beauty with your eyeballs. Cliffs, waterfalls, lakes, meadows—Grand Portage is grand indeed.
Along with nine different water accesses, you’ll have easy entry to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The Border Route Trail is an epic 65-mile backpacking and hiking trail through this wilderness. But if you’d rather explore section of forest closer at hand, there are three campgrounds, all excellent options.
The best time to visit Grand Portage State Forest is during the summer and fall when the weather is ideal for outdoor activities. Winter offers a snowy wonderland for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, but be prepared for cold temperatures.
