Weekend Trip to Tumbleweed Base Camp

This was a quaint place very well placed to give seclusion yet close enough for any need. I will be excited to see how they continue to grow as I will definitely return. I will say having a communal grill would be a great upgrade.

Staying at Tumbleweed worked very well for our family. We had a grassy site with a picnic table. We had easy access to the nice recreation /lounge area in the barn. David and Logan were very hospitable and welcoming. We would definitely stay again.

The site was very quiet and so comfortable! We felt like we were by ourselves in the woods. The bathroom was very clean and convenient. The hosts were absolutely fabulous!

This is a lovely, quiet spot with prime location to Detroit Mtn. The property's renovated barn is beautiful with amenities like bumper pool table, ping pong, dining area, reading books. We had a 20 ft. Camper and there was another longer camper and a couple ofntent campers. Super nice, highly recommend.

Beautiful! Gracious host. Wanted to see the stars but we had thunderstorms so…. I guess … I’ll have to go back 😊. Noreen so kind —-farm fresh eggs. Even told us about a door to the basement just in case storms were severe. And we learned some things about plants. Going home to plant red clover. Thx

We loved this Hipcamp!! Campfire, ping pong, a clean porta potty … what more could we ask for? Oh - and it’s within a few miles of a giant troll. So fun.

Noreen was a WONDERFUL host! She welcomed us with a dozen eggs accompanied by her guardian dog, Max (who is super friendly as well!). She helped us get settled, had a clean Porto potty, educated some on her farming practices, and pointed us in a good direction to stretch our legs after the long drive. Definitely recommend!

Dave and Logan were perfect hosts. Perfect place to stop in on way to Yellowstone . Very nice people. Beautiful property. They have everything you need. Very clean and tidy. We set up our truck tent by his barn which is beautiful on the inside. Was truly awesome!! Would definitely do this again :)

2 nights at Tumbleweed Base Camp

Staying here was such a delight! Everyone was so kind and welcoming, including JuJu the cat :) We had a wonderful time getting to know everyone and exploring the space. We stayed in the TeePee and it was very cozy. The lights were a great added feature! The barn had so much character and it was clear that lots of love was put into this campground as a whole. 100/10

Noreen was an amazing hostess. The area is a beautiful working farm with a friendly farm dog and chickens running around. Nice shaded area. Amazingly quiet and with a nice sky at night. Noreen even brought us fresh eggs and homemade bread.

What a great concept! David was very welcoming, and the space is awesome. So lovely to hang out indoors and have a refrigerator. We were there on a cooler weekday night and it was a good vibe, so a busier warm night I’m sure. Would be excellent!

We had a great time camping here! So close to Detroit mountain to ride great MTB trails. There is also a nice archery course next door. Plenty of fun indoor and outdoor games on the property too. Highly recommend camping here.

We decided to tent camp here for a short weekend of hiking and relaxing! The hosts David and his son Logan were both very friendly and attentive to any needs you may have! Camping spaces were well kept and you were able to find some privacy despite the open/free camp style spots. Bathrooms were two ports-potties that had lots of ammeneties (Lysol, quality toilet paper, and lights). Water was from a spicket but tasted just fine. Lots of fun toys such as frisbees, cornhole boards and footballs! We didn’t utilize the barn space but could be really cool for a rainy day!

David and Logan made me feel like family coming home. I only came to overnight in a tent on my way cross-country and was blown away by the sincere greeting, offer to use the wheel borrow to move stuff to the camp site, and invitation to use the super chill barn space (as shown in photos).

Logan and David are great hosts. Friendly and helpful. Nicely manicured property, and though I didn't use it, the barn set up is great. David helped me when time to leave by bringing down trailer to load all my gear and bring it up to my car. A great help!

Such a lovely stay! Beautiful farm lands and felt very safe. Noreen was such a sweet host that went above and beyond with welcoming us, showing us around the farm, and giving us some delicious fresh home baked bread with organic farm fresh eggs for breakfast. What a treat this stay was. Highly recommend!

We felt so welcome, and everything was super cozy and clean. The teepee is on a raised deck with comfortable flooring inside and a wonderful king-sized mattress furnished with sheets, blankets, and pillows. The teepee has electricity run to it as well! For more creature comforts, the barn is only a short walk away. If you’re bringing a lot of equipment, they will lend you a wheelbarrow to move supplies as it is a short walk over lightly hilly grass to the teepee from the parking area. Definitely pay attention to the instructions they provide about how to get to the site without taking a super long gravel road as Google Maps may direct you to do!

If you find yourself needing to visit Fargo, North Dakota (maybe you’re driving with Steve Buscemi?), skip the motels and head to Buffalo River State Park. One of Minnesota’s largest and most flourishing prairie ecosystems thrives here, where 250 secies of wildflowers blanket the sprawling grasslands and you can fall asleep to the most peaceful sounds of dozens of native songbirds. Just a quick drive from Fargo, it’s a great spot for a weekend away from the city life—you can catch some excellent swimming in the river, hiking the dense woods, or picnicking.

When to go

The ideal time to visit Buffalo River State Park is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural scenery is at its peak. Summer brings warmth perfect for water activities, though it can be busy. Winter offers a quiet, snowy retreat, but be prepared for cold temperatures and limited access to some park areas.

Check for any park alerts or road closures before your visit, as conditions can change.
Remember that Highway 67 is permanently closed; use provided GPS coordinates for navigation.

Buffalo River Campground

Buffalo River is a great little spot for a weekend camp. Amenities are true to a traditional state park plus an awesome swim pond. There are a few miles of trails all pretty easy treks to be made in under and hour, easy for groups or children. I frequently make day trips out to Buffalo River. It is wonderful!
