This is a very private location. In its former life this property was a limestone quarry. Evidence of it's history remain with high rock walls on both ends of the property. In the center of the property is about 5 acres that is flat and covered with wildflowers and small trees. There are several good options for camping in this area. Surrounding this area is another 15 acres of hills and trees. We have a scenic overlook open to all guests where you can relax and sit on a wooden swing while enjoying the beautiful view of the Mississippi River below. There is a boat ramp just a mile down the hill for boating or fishing on the Mississippi and the city of La Crosse, WI and La Crescent, MN are each only about a five minute drive. We’ve built two structures on the property, including a shop with a restroom and a cozy porch where my wife and I enjoy evenings watching deer and other wildlife. What began as a spot for family camping has grown into a campground we’re now opening to guests.

Update: So far this spring we haven't seen any fish in our pond. We don't know what happened to them and if fishing on the pond will be possible this year.

Once the site of the historic V.J. Fetzner Brewery from the late 19th Century. The land is now used as a hobby farm, honey bee sanctuary and nursery to a unique tree species normally not found in Southeastern Minnesota.
Remnants of the brewery are still visible. Foundation walls outline the massive structure of the brewery. Nestled in the center of the foundation is the entrance to
the sixty-seven foot deep cave that
once held barrels of beer and can be accessed by canoe only.
Hops have been located on the property and are believed to be ancestors of those raised to make the beer once stored in the cave. The pond that provides access to the cave was dug out in the early 1990's to create a fish out for the Spring Falls Trout Farm that used to exist across the highway. Some of the original brood stock still exist and continue to naturally stock the pond. It is not uncommon to see fish that are five to ten pounds in size. We do not allow fishing from our pond.
The residents house is built to scale to the original brew master's house. While the house is only twenty-four years old it looks as though you have taken a step back in time. The name Shady Rest was given to the house by
the Brew Master's wife.
We thought it was appropriate to keep the name alive.
Shady Rest Acres is comprised of twenty-three acres of beautiful woodlands and pasture that are protected forever
in the
Minnesota Land Trust. The pasture is home to Scottish Highlander cows, two miniature donkeys, five sheep, four goats, honey bees and a flock of chickens. Scottish Highlanders
were selected for both their grazing and browsing abilities. They are very docile and make excellent pasture mates to the smaller species sharing the pasture. The cows are excellent forest managers. They
clear out invasive species such as Honey Suckle, Buckthorn, and Barberry which can often be difficult to manage. A guided tour with the host can be taken to meet the pasture animals.
The forest is comprised of many tree species. Some are unique in that they normally do not grow in this region of Minnesota. The yellow birch is a species normally found in Northern Minnesota. It's bark is golden in color and glistens when the sun hits it just right. We have a cluster of several yellow birch including one that is so big that the bark no longer looks golden but instead is grey and very rough. Years ago the largest of these trees made excellent wood for turning bowls. Blue Beech (musclewood) can also be found on the property. As the name indicates the bark is shaped like muscles. Songbirds and some other species will use different parts of the tree as a food source. Towering white pines also speckle the landscape. Mother pine requires at least two humans arm lengths to encircle the whole tree. She is a favorite resting spot for the barred owl. There is oak, elm, maple, ceders, poplars and numerous other species.
Honey bees are an integral part of the landscape. We partnered with a friend and
started raising honey bees two years ago in order to do our part to keep pollinators thriving.
Their hives are located in the pasture where it has the perfect amount of early morning sun to get them moving and afternoon shade to balance out the summer heat. It is not uncommon to see them pollinating garden plants, trees and wild flowers around the property. One of their favorite feeding spots is the acre and a half prairie which offers a range of plants including big blue stem, wild indigo and baby blue stem, to name a few. Not only are honey bees essential to the food chain but they also provide a very enriching experience when they are observed moving about their hives. There is nothing more relaxing and fascinating than watching these amazing creatures.

We have a lovely piece of property to come enjoy a getaway at. We enjoy all of the peace and quiet around here. The night sky is unbeatable in my eyes. We have a small hobby farm with lots of very tame animals. We have 42 acres to roams with lots of trails within the woods that are filled with aged oak trees and many young maple trees. Our property is filled with lots of wild flowers and wildlife.
We are locate 3 miles from the root river if you enjoy fishing or going for a float down the river. There are two caves in our area that are a must see while you are visiting. I you like to hike there is a state park 14 minutes from us that have many miles of hiking trails and horse trails.
If you are more the small town strolling type of person we have lots of small towns around us that are filled with shops and lots of great food! There is a large system of bike trails in our area that make a very fun way to check out some of the small towns.
If you have a family with kids we have a lot of fun activities you can do with your kids, like spending time with the goats and chickens, playing on our playground, or taking a nice walk through the woods looking for fossils!

This hipcamp site is absolutely stunning beautiful. Unfortunately, my phone died so couldn't get any pictures, but pictures really don't do this place justice anyway, as it's a must see hidden gem in the beautiful mountain-like region of North East Iowa.
Every beautiful picture you WILL see that other people have taken of this site is all that and then some.
Shauna is an amazing host, she's very attentive hospital, and accommodating.
My son and I had an amazing time out there, tubing, fishing and swimming amongst the bluffs and rocks of the yellow river, eagles flying over head, as trout swam below.
If you're looking for a place to camp, fish, and swim this place is a 100%. we will definitely be coming back to this spot in the future.

Unbelievable!!!! Beautiful area! Extremely private. Able to walk along the river and fish. Wonderful paths made through the woods. Several camping spots for a larger gathering. So quiet and peaceful. Thank you Eric!!!!

WOW ! We were in awe the entire time. Jolene was such a friendly and gracious host. The campsite was a great space, as clean as outside can be, AND we got a great view of the cows which my son really enjoyed pointing at. We have every intention of returning to check out the other sites and have shared with others in hopes they swing in on their journey too. Absolutely recommend.

This was the perfect spot for a weekend camping trip. Erica helped recommend the best site for more privacy as we brought our two girls and our dog. This was our first time camping in a tent with everyone and the location was just what we needed. Directions to the place were extremely easy to follow. The site was well kept and tucked away with its own scenic overlook and the general area was beautiful with plenty to explore. We will be back for more family camping adventures at the quarry.

Weekend Trip to Aefintyr
Once you make it up the hill it’s a beautiful and well thought out campground with nice private campsites. We loved the stand up wooden cubby’s to put our stuff in to keep away from critters. We had a table and chairs to sit at. But we loved that the there was a community area with gas grill and platform to make our food, patio furniture to hang out, eat. The composting toilets were very nice and smelled good inside! Also loved that there is water and soap to wash hands too! Highly recommend this place! Thanks for sharing!

We really loved camping on Eric's riverfront site. His property is amazing. It feels so secluded yet accessible. We camped at the fire ring next to the river and it was so peaceful. There is a nice size landing up above with the outhouse for larger groups but there was plenty of space by the river. The dogs loved getting into the water with us!

Great view and nice site but what really stood out was Allen's hospitality. My GPS took me way off course but Al gave me directions to get to his place and was nice enough to give me a lift up the (steep) trail up to the site after dark. Would absolutely recommend it!

2 nights at Lanesboro Acres
This spot was a little slice of heaven. The tent was cozy and well-maintained. The views from the campsite were stunning. We enjoyed the wildflower prairie, the many birds and butterflies, and the spectacular sunsets. Neil was friendly and commutative and provided a tube and detailed instructions for a lovely float down the Root River. 10/10 would recommend.

I take an annual trip to Bluff Hollow, and it is a camping trip I look forward to every year. Eric is a responsive and friendly host, and the campsite is breathtaking. Eric does a great job cutting trails, so you can explore the site. The river is a beautiful and tranquil space, and it's a great place to bring dogs. It's stunning.

20 ft truck camper
This was actually my first Hipcamp. I rolled in off of I 90 on a cross-country trip, mile and a half north of the highway, and there it was, better than advertised. I had it all to myself, which would’ve been fine if I had to share, but I didn’t. It was getting on in the day, but I walked around the area and realized I was encased in a cornfield. I stayed in site 1 with my truck camper, the tent options looked real nice as well. Never saw a single person. Rolled out early and called it a success story.
