Spacious Skies Balsam Woods is a hidden paradise of a campground located right in the heart of Maine, just a half hour south of Moosehead Lake, the largest lake in Maine, and 60 miles as the crow flies from the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, Mt. Katahdin, in Baxter State Park. We offer both wooded and open sites that can accommodate most rigs. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring, water, 30 or 50-amp electrical service, and most offer sewer. Groups and tent campers are welcome. Balsam Woods campground is less than a minute’s drive from Piper Pond, a 2-mile-long lake with public boat launch and beach access. Onsite, we have a camp store and snack bar stocked with necessities, treats, and goodies for the whole family. There is no shortage of fun activities with our heated pool, classic rec hall, playground, a new jumping pillow, and gem mining! Big Moose Inn Cabins & CampgroundIrving O. Hunt and his brother Lyman built some rough camps on Millinocket Lake before they became interested in the Nesowadnehunk Stream region. Whether or not their old camps were at the same site as the present camps on Millinocket Lake we do not know.The Millinocket Lake Camps, known today as Big Moose Inn, are located on a narrow spit of land separating Ambejejus Lake and Millinocket Lake. Before a dam controlled Ambajejus’ water level, it was possible to pole up the short stream from Millinocket Lake into Ambejejus.Fred Spencer build the camps, originally named Camp Eureka, in 1899 or 1900 and ran them with his brother. With the founding of Millinocket only a few years earlier and lumbering roads nearing Katahdin, the two lakes became more easily accessible. Camp Eureka was advertised as the only camp reachable by both boat (from Norcross) and road (from Millinocket). In 1905, the rate was $1.50 per day, meals included. Spencer also claimed the lakes had no flies or mosquitoes during spring and summer- a phenomenon caused by the way winds blow across the lakes, which makes it difficult for insects to gain a foothold.The camps’ name changed to Camp Spencer and later to Spencer’s Camps. Around 1929 the lease was transferred to Elmer Woodworth, who lived with his wife on a nearby island while they operated the camps. Elmer, a well-known guide, trapped over the winter, and his wife served as the camp cook. The couple soon renamed the camps Millinocket Lake Camps and Trading Post. They also maintained an outlying camp on Sandy Stream for their guests. In 1941, a major fire broke out in the area. The Woodworths saved the camps by wetting them down, but lost their island home when a stray spark jumped the cove. There is some evidence that, for a short time, a gentleman named Johnny Given either held the lease or managed the camps for the Woodworths. Except for that brief change the Woodworths operated the camps for many years until they passed the lease on to their son Ray, who ran them with his wife Muriel.In 1977, the lease was transferred to Bob and Frederica (“Teddy”) Boynton, who in 1981 sold the trading post to Erwin and Maureen Bacon. The Boyntons retained the sporting camp operation and later added a public restaurant. Teddy renamed the camps Big Moose Inn. Bob and his son Bruce made many renovations to the camps, while Teddy decorated and furnished them. The Boynton Family has remained involved in the success of the inn and restaurant. After Teddy’s death in 1991, management passed to Bruce and his sister Laurie, but Bob and other family members are still very involved.The dam separates the flowages of the two lakes. Millinocket Lake is about eight feet above its original level, and Ambajejus is now some 21 feet above its original level. Gardiner Farms RV site is located on the Grindstone Rd/Rt 11 in Stacyville, Maine. The campsite is situated on a 200 acre lot with lots of room to hike about or walk your pets. The adjacent field is a working potato farm while the north end of the lot is older fields and woodlands. The Grindstone Rd is an approved ATV access route. We have places for 2 campers on this site. The main site includes 20/30/50 amp electric, water, sewer, and trash removal-no extra charges for anything. There is also a campfire pit on the premises. This year, we are making available for rent a Buddy site in case you are traveling with a friend with their own RV. This will be right in the driveway at the main site. This site will offer 15 amp electric and water if you have a wye valve. No worries, if you rent the main site, you will be the only one that can rent the Buddy site. Sorry, no WIFI, but you should be able to get a cell phone signal at the campsite. Millinocket is about 30 miles away and Houlton is about 45 miles. Katahdin Woods & Waters Monument https://www.nps.gov/kaww/index.htm is about 20 minutes away depending upon which parcel you want to access. The Penobscot Trail system (bicycles) https://penobscotrivertrails.org/ is 10 minutes away. In Patten, you will find the Lumberman's Museum https://lumbermensmuseum.org/ and several restaurants and takeouts. Excellent canoeing/kayaking, hunting and fishing on the East Branch of the Penobscot River. Old Home Days in Sherman is Labor Day Weekend. This campsite is open from May 15th to October 15th.

Welcome to Marble Creek Acres Tucked into the woods of the Northern Maine Highlands, Marble Creek Acres is a growing winery and cidery destination with a homestead heart. Situated on 6 peaceful acres of mixed woods and farmland, our property offers a unique blend of rustic charm and flavorful experiences. Our onsite winery and cidery is the centerpiece of the farm, featuring a cozy tasting room where you can sample from a rotating menu of 15+ handcrafted wines and 20+ hard ciders on tap. Whether you're an experienced enthusiast or a casual sipper, there’s always something new to discover in your glass. In addition to tastings, we host guests through Airbnb and Harvest Hosts, offering a quiet place to stay with modern comforts, star-filled skies, and the peaceful stillness of the Maine woods. Our farm is home to a small herd of Kiko goats, a working greenhouse, and 24 raised garden beds filled with perennials like rhubarb, horseradish, asparagus, blueberries, and grapes. We also maintain around 100 dwarf apple trees, and pear, peach, plum, and cherry trees, that contribute to our hard cider production, along with active honey bees (both Italian and Saskatraz) who help pollinate the land and produce our own raw honey. Guests are welcome to browse the Farm Store, portion of our tasting room, stocked with seasonal goods like goat sausage, jams, maple syrup, honey, and fresh vegetables when available, and a large selection of small-batch crafted wine, and hard cider. Adventure awaits just outside the gate with direct access to the Mt. Jefferson Backcountry Riders ATV Trail System, connecting you to hundreds of miles of scenic routes that reach north to Houlton, east to Calais, and even south toward Ellsworth. The region is also rich with lakes, rivers, and streams for paddling, fishing, or simply soaking in nature. Loved the friendly staff and the cabin atmosphere all around. Site AB backed up to the main road but wasn’t busy on our 1 night overnight. Bathrooms and showers were clean and right there. The lakes on both sides were very pretty and great if you wanted to canoe or kayak. It was the perfect place to stay before going out on the Golden Road or to Baxter State Park. Absolutely loved the checkin area with fireplace and restaurant behind it.

My wife and I stayed here while our daughter started her southbound AT thru hike. The place was perfect! Mike was amazingly accommodating! We enjoyed our evenings sitting outside and watching the sunset. It was peaceful and quiet. We absolutely loved it and will be back to stay whenever we make it back to the area.

Loved our stay. Pretty view of the lake. Clean bathroom facilities. The food and service were great at the Big Moose restaurant. Thankful we could have our dog with us. Location is convenient to Baxter State Park. Highly recommend

Hands down the BEST hipcamp in Maine. It's truly private. The host lives down the street. The towns around is charming! You're right on the same road as the katahdin monument which when we went there was no one.else besides us! We also took the multi hour trip to the Ghost trains have been abandoned for almost 100 years and should be on uour bucket list for Maine. While there is a grocery store and a couple places to dine out..most fast food and chain restaurants are at least 40 minutes away so it's best to prepare food at home. There are great Amish stores nearby too! The host sells fire wood and maple syrup. You have a beautiful pull through level lot, a fire ring and full hook ups and they will even take care of your trash. I would have stayed longer if we didn't have plans elsewhere. We stayed for 2 weeks and I highly recommend staying more than just a couple days. You cant beat the price either. If we come back to Maine this will be out #1 pick.

I had a big site. The water and electric was over by the bathrooms and if I had my RV it would have been a pain to get to but since i was in my camper van it was no problem. The campgrounds were really clean and well taken care of and so was the bathrooms. Campgrounds are really close to Baxter State Park

This spot is perfect for peace and quiet! We enjoyed the fresh air and tranquility and Mike is a fantastic host. He made sure we had all the info we needed and was accessible if we had any questions. We will definitely stay again whenever we are in the area in the future!

We had a nice stay. First impression was great, the yurt was clean and fresh. The beds were quite comfy. Pretty much everything you need is provided. Monica was hilarious and helpful. We ate a lot of good food from local eateries and saw some great sights. The outdoor shower was great. We sat on the dock in the evenings and watched the frogs and loons. We definitely recommend this site!

This campground was perfectly situated in the heart of God's country. It sits between Lake Ambejejus and Millinockett Lake. We found Ambejejus to be outstanding for swimming. The sites were very spacious and flat. AB was right next to the bathrooms/showers, which was also nice. There are also 3 restaurants within walking distance that offer a nice variety of cuisines, ranging from bar food/sandwiches to upscale entrees. We really had a great time at Big Moose!

Sherri was an excellent host. Very friendly and responds to communications promptly. Perfect location for a fishing kayak given proximity to water and private dock. I did not have cell service from the location but Sherri provides access to her high speed internet so no concern with staying connected.

They were very nice and let us switch to a spot right on the lake. Quiet place and a good base for us. We saw a show at the Boreal Theater in town and went on a great hike to the ice cave. The showers were HOT and good pressure.

Mikes land was awesome! Nice big yard, fire pit, reasonably priced firewood, plenty of space. Although somewhat close to the road, it was quiet. The little garage on the property had some roof for storage that we were able to use for our motorcycles! It was awesome! We weren’t expecting that perk. Easy to pull in and out (essentially a pull through site). Lots of walking to do around the potato fields. Will absolutely be back!
