Big Moose Inn Cabins & CampgroundIrving O. Hunt and his brother Lyman built some rough camps on Millinocket Lake before they became interested in the Nesowadnehunk Stream region. Whether or not their old camps were at the same site as the present camps on Millinocket Lake we do not know.The Millinocket Lake Camps, known today as Big Moose Inn, are located on a narrow spit of land separating Ambejejus Lake and Millinocket Lake. Before a dam controlled Ambajejus’ water level, it was possible to pole up the short stream from Millinocket Lake into Ambejejus.Fred Spencer build the camps, originally named Camp Eureka, in 1899 or 1900 and ran them with his brother. With the founding of Millinocket only a few years earlier and lumbering roads nearing Katahdin, the two lakes became more easily accessible. Camp Eureka was advertised as the only camp reachable by both boat (from Norcross) and road (from Millinocket). In 1905, the rate was $1.50 per day, meals included. Spencer also claimed the lakes had no flies or mosquitoes during spring and summer- a phenomenon caused by the way winds blow across the lakes, which makes it difficult for insects to gain a foothold.The camps’ name changed to Camp Spencer and later to Spencer’s Camps. Around 1929 the lease was transferred to Elmer Woodworth, who lived with his wife on a nearby island while they operated the camps. Elmer, a well-known guide, trapped over the winter, and his wife served as the camp cook. The couple soon renamed the camps Millinocket Lake Camps and Trading Post. They also maintained an outlying camp on Sandy Stream for their guests. In 1941, a major fire broke out in the area. The Woodworths saved the camps by wetting them down, but lost their island home when a stray spark jumped the cove. There is some evidence that, for a short time, a gentleman named Johnny Given either held the lease or managed the camps for the Woodworths. Except for that brief change the Woodworths operated the camps for many years until they passed the lease on to their son Ray, who ran them with his wife Muriel.In 1977, the lease was transferred to Bob and Frederica (“Teddy”) Boynton, who in 1981 sold the trading post to Erwin and Maureen Bacon. The Boyntons retained the sporting camp operation and later added a public restaurant. Teddy renamed the camps Big Moose Inn. Bob and his son Bruce made many renovations to the camps, while Teddy decorated and furnished them. The Boynton Family has remained involved in the success of the inn and restaurant. After Teddy’s death in 1991, management passed to Bruce and his sister Laurie, but Bob and other family members are still very involved.The dam separates the flowages of the two lakes. Millinocket Lake is about eight feet above its original level, and Ambajejus is now some 21 feet above its original level. Today several West Branch rafting companies make the inn their seasonal center of operations.At Big Moose, we bring you a rare blend of friendly service and lovely surroundings that successfully reflects our unique personality. Those that wish to have an extended stay here are welcome, but please do not expect the amenities of a campground. We are a humble, small, family-operated, diversified farm spanning 180 acres. Alongside raising thirteen children, we take pride in cultivating u-pick blueberries, raspberries, apples, and pumpkins, as well as raising meat poultry and laying hens. Gardiner Farms RV site is located on the Grindstone Rd/Rt 11 in Stacyville, Maine. The campsite is situated on a 200 acre lot with lots of room to hike about or walk your pets. The adjacent field is a working potato farm while the north end of the lot is older fields and woodlands. The Grindstone Rd is an approved ATV access route. We have places for 2 campers on this site. The main site includes 20/30/50 amp electric, water, sewer, and trash removal-no extra charges for anything. There is also a campfire pit on the premises. This year, we are making available for rent a Buddy site in case you are traveling with a friend with their own RV. This will be right in the driveway at the main site. This site will offer 15 amp electric and water if you have a wye valve. No worries, if you rent the main site, you will be the only one that can rent the Buddy site. Sorry, no WIFI, but you should be able to get a cell phone signal at the campsite. Millinocket is about 30 miles away and Houlton is about 45 miles. Katahdin Woods & Waters Monument https://www.nps.gov/kaww/index.htm is about 20 minutes away depending upon which parcel you want to access. The Penobscot Trail system (bicycles) https://penobscotrivertrails.org/ is 10 minutes away. In Patten, you will find the Lumberman's Museum https://lumbermensmuseum.org/ and several restaurants and takeouts. Excellent canoeing/kayaking, hunting and fishing on the East Branch of the Penobscot River. Old Home Days in Sherman is Labor Day Weekend. This campsite is open from May 15th to October 15th.

Located in the town of Smyrna in Northern Maine. We are in the heart of Amish country with many Amish stores close by as well as other local businesses. There is plenty to do in this area, we have two golf courses close by. Numerous Club ATV Trails, fishing, hunting, boating, kayaking, hiking and more. The north entrance of Baxter State Park is about an hour away and you can be on the pristine Maine seacoast in about 3 hours.
Our private RV site is a 50 Amp full hookup including sewer. Our grounds are maintained and we normally cut the grass once a week. We provide a picnic table and a fire pit. Fire wood can be purchased on site. We will be testing our water later this year…until the results come back we state the water is ‘NONPOTABLE”
There is a pet exercise area provided which is at least 75ft from dwellings and a large open field that is closely mowed if you wish to play fetch with your pet. Directly across the road from the RV site is the upper Bison (Buffalo) field. On site there is also a nail salon that specialize in Pedi, Mani and Thai Nail Art. Book early as her appointment book stays full particularly during the summer months.
ATV & SXS. We are within a couple miles of the Major trail heads. Smyrna Town Office is approximately 2 miles away if you need to register your machines

The remaining acreage is wooded and perfect for foraging or walking down the trail to see the train tracks. The two closest towns for shopping or restaurants are Lincoln Maine or Houlton Maine. We are about an hour and 15 minutes away from Bangor Maine.
We love the peace and tranquility of our little farm in rural Kingman, Maine and are excited to share the property with you! Grass parking only, not paved. We have septic, a hose for water and 30 amp electric available. No wifi.
Our property is also our home and we have a farm stand open to the public. Some traffic, customers and ongoing farm projects are to be expected around the property. We are pet friendly but ask that you keep your pets on leash at all times as we have farm dogs of our own as well as small livestock like chicks and chickens on the property.

Camper Sites were level and open, easy to get the camper in and landed. 30 Amp Power was excellent, water is provided but based on outside cold temps and low pressure, I would fill your on board freshwater tank for better results. Free firewood but bring dry kindling to start your fires with. Great Dump Station to empty your camper prior to departing. Outstanding experience if you are looking to hunt in the North Maine Woods, and you want the finer amenities with your camper rather than boondocking, please give them a look, it is worth it.

Private site, could just see the raspberry bushes ahead. Nice site for a fire, bring a good size grate if you don’t have a grill. They left wood, there was plenty of kindling nearby in the woods as well. The farm was beautiful, very nice folk. Would stay again!

I had a big site. The water and electric was over by the bathrooms and if I had my RV it would have been a pain to get to but since i was in my camper van it was no problem. The campgrounds were really clean and well taken care of and so was the bathrooms. Campgrounds are really close to Baxter State Park

We had an amazing stay here. We were met by the owner as we pulled up and he gave us a tour and let us set up wherever it suited us. He was generous with his time and helped us as we were motorcycle camping and needed to repair a bent rim. He also owns the general store next store which is very well stocked.

This spot is perfect for peace and quiet! We enjoyed the fresh air and tranquility and Mike is a fantastic host. He made sure we had all the info we needed and was accessible if we had any questions. We will definitely stay again whenever we are in the area in the future!

20 ft pop-up camper
This campground was perfectly situated in the heart of God's country. It sits between Lake Ambejejus and Millinockett Lake. We found Ambejejus to be outstanding for swimming. The sites were very spacious and flat. AB was right next to the bathrooms/showers, which was also nice. There are also 3 restaurants within walking distance that offer a nice variety of cuisines, ranging from bar food/sandwiches to upscale entrees. We really had a great time at Big Moose!

This was our first Hipcamp experience and may I say it was a good one! We were greeted with smiles and shown where we could camp. We did not have a lot of interaction with the family as we arrived late and left early, but everyone was polite!

Joseph and Claire are the nicest people you will ever meet. Claire greeted me at check-in and escorted me down the road to my site. She shared that there was not too much to explore in the area and I may bet bored. I informed her that I enjoyed road cycling and she offered a variety of options of varying distances. I found the surrounding towns to have plenty of activities for me. There was a wonderful hiking trail in the town of Houlton, as well as a driving range and a beautiful 9 hole golf course just a few miles away from Joseph and Claire's. I was never bored. Even when I strained my knee hiking, I caught up on reading and the latest stages of the Tour de France. :-)
The family owns and operates their farmland (over 100 acres), so they are busy and depending on the season, there may be equipment moving about. I grew up close to farms, so I enjoy the sound of tractors, ATVs and the like. Make sure to take advantage of their berry picking.
As a bonus, I was having problems with my electrical system and Joseph came over and was able to troubleshoot it in minutes. You can feel the strong family values the moment you meet them. Stop in and see for yourself.
