Big Moose Inn Cabins & CampgroundIrving O. Hunt and his brother Lyman built some rough camps on Millinocket Lake before they became interested in the Nesowadnehunk Stream region. Whether or not their old camps were at the same site as the present camps on Millinocket Lake we do not know.The Millinocket Lake Camps, known today as Big Moose Inn, are located on a narrow spit of land separating Ambejejus Lake and Millinocket Lake. Before a dam controlled Ambajejus’ water level, it was possible to pole up the short stream from Millinocket Lake into Ambejejus.Fred Spencer build the camps, originally named Camp Eureka, in 1899 or 1900 and ran them with his brother. With the founding of Millinocket only a few years earlier and lumbering roads nearing Katahdin, the two lakes became more easily accessible. Camp Eureka was advertised as the only camp reachable by both boat (from Norcross) and road (from Millinocket). In 1905, the rate was $1.50 per day, meals included. Spencer also claimed the lakes had no flies or mosquitoes during spring and summer- a phenomenon caused by the way winds blow across the lakes, which makes it difficult for insects to gain a foothold.The camps’ name changed to Camp Spencer and later to Spencer’s Camps. Around 1929 the lease was transferred to Elmer Woodworth, who lived with his wife on a nearby island while they operated the camps. Elmer, a well-known guide, trapped over the winter, and his wife served as the camp cook. The couple soon renamed the camps Millinocket Lake Camps and Trading Post. They also maintained an outlying camp on Sandy Stream for their guests. In 1941, a major fire broke out in the area. The Woodworths saved the camps by wetting them down, but lost their island home when a stray spark jumped the cove. There is some evidence that, for a short time, a gentleman named Johnny Given either held the lease or managed the camps for the Woodworths. Except for that brief change the Woodworths operated the camps for many years until they passed the lease on to their son Ray, who ran them with his wife Muriel.In 1977, the lease was transferred to Bob and Frederica (“Teddy”) Boynton, who in 1981 sold the trading post to Erwin and Maureen Bacon. The Boyntons retained the sporting camp operation and later added a public restaurant. Teddy renamed the camps Big Moose Inn. Bob and his son Bruce made many renovations to the camps, while Teddy decorated and furnished them. The Boynton Family has remained involved in the success of the inn and restaurant. After Teddy’s death in 1991, management passed to Bruce and his sister Laurie, but Bob and other family members are still very involved.The dam separates the flowages of the two lakes. Millinocket Lake is about eight feet above its original level, and Ambajejus is now some 21 feet above its original level. Today several West Branch rafting companies make the inn their seasonal center of operations.At Big Moose, we bring you a rare blend of friendly service and lovely surroundings that successfully reflects our unique personality. Firewood and propane and plenty of water at sink provided. 2 8ft kayaks for your use to explore all the ponds and lakes nearby. You can spend days or weeks exploring the area, hiking, biking, canoeing, mountain climbing and swimming. Its like going back in time a hundred years but you have some cell reception, unlike our ancestors. Have made several improvements to cabin not yet reflected in guest photos. Yeti type cooler provided for refrigeration of food for longer stays. The cabin is small but can accommodate 5 easily. Queen bed with bunk beds in 1st floor bedroom, full size and twin bed in upstairs bedroom. Clean linens provided. Open kitchen and living room. Seems like most people love it. Pretty sure you will too. So much to do in the area. Be as bored or as active as you want. Welcome book with directions to local spots all very close. Waterfalls, the most beautiful lake (Onawa), swimming holes... all close by. Appalachian trail out back. Other sites close by must be driven to but close by still, away from town. If you would like a wheel barrow full of firewood provided there is some available on site for a small donation. • There is a hammock with a shade cover at the cabin for you to use. • There is a bug net provided in the cabin if you're in need of some extra protection indoors. • Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge is a short drive with a few hiking trails. • Baxter State Park & Acadia National Park are each an hour and a half away (just in opposite directions). • A composting toilet is on site, with a scoop and bucket of sawdust to cover waste. I you need to pee, find a tree! If it's number two, use the loo! • No electricity at the cabin or on the property • No running or potable drinking water. Must bring in water. • The cabin is quite cozy for 1-2 people and/or 1-2 fur babies. The cabin itself has an 8x10’ floor plan with a full size futon. The deck gives another 3’ to enjoy your inside/outside stay. • The property DOES get full sun so be aware of finding shade throughout the day! I like to enjoy the river(s) and explore the area during the peak heat hours! • Mosquitos like to come out at dusk. I do have some citronella candles but it would be best if you came prepared with bug repellent! • There is a New tiny cabin construction on site! • This cabin is NOT private - one dwelling is visible but it is also NOT a rental. The property offers a semi private family camping compound with an open fire place, extra tenting areas, generous parking and a private family playground. We have one woodland site, and one riverside site. Our playground offers an 18 hole chipping golf course, 9 hole woodland disc golf course, pickle ball/ badmitten court, ax throwing board, child zip line, horse shoes, cornhole, and a fish feeding trout hole. We also rent e-bikes, kayaks, fishing equipment and watercraft, family float tubes, and shuttle services for adventure pick ups and drop offs. All at very low prices!!! We also provide assistance for taylored outdoor camping and exploring experiences, including trip prep, shuttling, securing fire permits, gear and bike/boat rentals, live lobster and seafood orders, large meal assistance, and a manned tiki bar with appetizers, pizzas and campfire snacks and waitservice, with a convegnient hourly rental option. Our approach is not toughing it. Our goal is to create a great family camping memory!

Gardiner Farms RV site is located on the Grindstone Rd/Rt 11 in Stacyville, Maine. The campsite is situated on a 200 acre lot with lots of room to hike about or walk your pets. The adjacent field is a working potato farm while the north end of the lot is older fields and woodlands. The Grindstone Rd is an approved ATV access route. We have places for 2 campers on this site. The main site includes 20/30/50 amp electric, water, sewer, and trash removal-no extra charges for anything. There is also a campfire pit on the premises. This year, we are making available for rent a Buddy site in case you are traveling with a friend with their own RV. This will be right in the driveway at the main site. This site will offer 15 amp electric and water if you have a wye valve. No worries, if you rent the main site, you will be the only one that can rent the Buddy site. Sorry, no WIFI, but you should be able to get a cell phone signal at the campsite. Millinocket is about 30 miles away and Houlton is about 45 miles. Katahdin Woods & Waters Monument https://www.nps.gov/kaww/index.htm is about 20 minutes away depending upon which parcel you want to access. The Penobscot Trail system (bicycles) https://penobscotrivertrails.org/ is 10 minutes away. In Patten, you will find the Lumberman's Museum https://lumbermensmuseum.org/ and several restaurants and takeouts. Excellent canoeing/kayaking, hunting and fishing on the East Branch of the Penobscot River. Old Home Days in Sherman is Labor Day Weekend. This campsite is open from May 15th to October 15th.

There is a nearby creek leading to the 10,000 Acre Bog which is full of peat + pitcher plants. The house is fed by a well and there is not one but two seasonal springs in the garden, one supports a raspberry bog, and the other a very nice pond which a variety of toads and frogs and salamanders enjoy. The home is 5 min. from the grocery, town office, post office, transfer station, & church in Sherman; 10 min. from the local junior high & high school; 25 min. from hardware, nursery, supermarket, & churches in Patten. Just 30 min. from Millinocket, 45 min. from Lincoln, & 1 hr. from Bangor. Express bus service to the airport from Circle K by the Katahdin Motor Lodge 2 min. from the house. Weekend Trip to 100 Mile Wilderness Cabin

This was our second visit to Paul's cabin and did not disappoint again. Paul made sure there was enough water and wood to last our stay. There is now a flushing toilet outside which was a nice treat. There are many fantastic walking trails close by including the Appalachian Trail. This time round we spent time at North Pond and Juniper Knee Pond and hiked 4ish hour to Little Wilson Falls (there and back and time at the falls).

Steve's campsite was wonderful! There are three tents on site, and the largest one has a beautiful porch looking out over Mt. Katahdin and other mountains in Baxter State Park. The kitchen was equipped for everything and we had everything we needed, including solar-powered phone chargers. We were prepared for chilly nights (mid+October), and were toasty in the tents with the woodstove. We hope to return again and do more exploring in the area.

Weekend Trip to Evergreen Conservation Area

I loved staying on Dan’s property. His camp provided everything my group needed for a relaxing fall weekend getaway: spectacular views, accommodating infrastructure, and absolute solitude. You can tell he’s put a lot of thought and energy into the property (and the Hipcamp experience ), which made the entire stay seamless and inviting. We will be back! Pro Tips: 1) arrive before dark to get your bearings, 2) pack light (it’s a good hike to the lake) and the rocky, rooty trail is not wagon-friendly, 3) Download offline Google maps and give yourself extra time for arrival because it’s way out there and GPS/cell service is spotty at best.

Travelers is hands down one of the most exceptional glamping experiences I’ve ever had. No detail or amenity has been left out to make the stay as comfortable as possible and you can tell that the host, Steve, truly cares about making the experience special to share with others. We enjoyed some of the local hiking trails and canoeing and were so excited to come back at the end of the day and watch the sunset over Katahdin, which could be seen from every spot on the property. Some of our favorite parts were: -The kitchen which well equipped and had everything required to cook proper meals in the outdoors. -Instant hot water for washing dishes and showering! -A small woodstove in the tent making for one of the coziest camping experiences we’ve had. -The sitting area with comfy couches and gas fireplace for relaxing after a long day outside. I certainly will be recommending Travelers to my friends and family as the best way to experience the Katahdin region.

My dog and I spent 3 nights at the Travelers campsite and it was great. The quarter mile gravel road from the main road to the site was easy to navigate and we'll maintained. The camp was very well built, private and comfortable. Nice tent with fireplace facing the sunset over Mt. Katahdin. The gazebo had a propane grill set up, solar usb power, propane fire pit table and hot water. No problems with cell phone signal. Look forward to staying again next year.

Dan was a gracious host with two cabins that were fit for anyone trying to get away for a long off grid weekend! Kayaks and canoes that are available make this spot that much more amazing. If you are trying to get away with your dog and not worry about any neighbors.. this is the spot. 10/10 recommend this gem of a spot with an amazing host!

Weekend Trip to Piscataquis Point

Perfect place for couples, families, or friends to come together in a quiet and private camp on beautiful river spot. The fire pit with cook top were amazing and wood provided was more than enough for the cool October nights and mornings. The camp is impeccable kept up, the bathroom is cleanest and neatest we have seen yet and we even got a magnet. Very thoughtful! Kyle’s metal work and brothers engraving can be seen throughout the campground giving it the touches it needs to set it above the rest. We booked our next visit on our ride home. We cannot wait to return to watch the eagles frolic and looking to catch their next meal in the river. Kyle is very responsive to messages and directions were easy to follow.

Weekend Trip to Katahdin Region Basecamp

Our list of places to see in the Katahdin region was long, but Westerly was so amazing with good biking, kayaks at the bog and dog friendly fields that we prioritized time at camp. The view of the mountain from the deck was better than any other place we could have gone. It was easy to make great meals since the kitchen was stocked with quality equipment (have you ever had a rental with sharp knives and high quality pans?!?). The site had good lighting, plenty of water, clean shower & toilet. And the benefits of living outside 24/7! Steve was super attentive to my question about the water faucet and we donated an orange vest and hat to be safe on the land during hunting season. Wished we’d booked more than two nights. I miss it already, the dogs do too.

Weekend Trip to Katahdin Region Basecamp

We just returned from a weekend at the Traveler's campsite in Staceyville. It was so beautiful!! What a wonderful camp site. Gazebo decked out with full kitchen, a deck overlooking Mount Katahdin, a hammock, a large sleeping tent, an outdoor shower and a very clean outhouse. What a wonderful way to be in nature. We hiked around the property and went kayaking in the pond. We drove 11 minutes down the road and went for a beautiful bike ride on the Penobscot Trails. And we had cinnamon french toast at Brenda's Restaurant before heading home. Thank you, Steve!

3 nights at Katahdin Region Basecamp

We stayed at Travellers , for 3 nights, our first time glamping, having done many car/tent camp trips. Steve was very responsive and helpful with a question we had. We arrived just as it was starting to rain, and were very glad of our big umbrella to get things loaded into the tent and the kitchen/living room gazebo. FYI, this site has easier access from car to tent and gazebo than Westerly. Excellent stock of nice pots and pans, knives (sharp!) and dinnerware. As expected, no spices other than salt and pepper. Plenty of dishwashing liquid, sponges, paper towels, dishtowels. Roomy! Very comfy sofa and 2 chairs. The 3 burner giant camp cookstove is wonderful. We did not use the grill function. It can be a bit chilly in the gazebo, and the gas open fireplace really is more for ambience than heat. The little woodstove in the tent really heated up, with just 2 logs. The fat wood provided all the kindling necessary, with just one piece of paper to get things going. Cots are decent, not sagging. With very wet raincoats we did wish for a way to hang them up to dry. Outhouse is clean, not smelly. The view! The stars too! The road in is fine, we were in a Subaru Outback. Heard the train a couple of times, as well as traffic on 11 now and then, and we think the mill on one day. We also heard barred owls, coyote, and maybe a moose. We hit fall colors ranging from just starting to near peak. Incredibly beautiful and very close to KWW. All in all wonderful.

Weekend Trip to Katahdin Region Basecamp

Westerly at Siberia Crossing was an amazing site and perfectly located for our exploration of Katahdin Woods and Waters NM. The sunset views from this site of Katahdin to North Traveler Mountain were incredible! The tents and cots were were comfortable and clean. The kitchen gazebo / communal area was very clean and in new condition and was well appointed with everything we needed to prepare meals and clean-up. We particularly enjoyed portion of the gazebo with the comfortable couch, chairs and gas fire pit and incredible views! Everything matched or exceeded the description. Directions and system operating instructions were accurate and easy to follow. Our host Steve provided great communication and was easy to reach with any questions that we had. We will definitely be back to Siberia Crossing ! Thank you Steve for building and managing this amazing glampsite!
