Our guests love staying here: "Camping at Gayle’s property was an amazing experience. We shared the field with 3 other campers but there was still plenty of room between sites. Land is flat and has fire pit spaces and BBQ grills. Outdoor shower was appreciated even though we didn’t use it & it was great to have the port-o-potty on site. The best part was getting to see the animals!"

Welcome to our little homestead. Nestled amidst the serene countryside, this quaint campground offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. Surrounded by lush farms and sprawling horse pastures, the air is filled with the sweet scent of wildflowers and the gentle rustle of leaves. With only a handful of RV spots and a few cozy tents scattered among the trees, guests can truly reconnect with nature while roasting marshmallows over crackling campfires under a blanket of stars. Here, the pace slows down, allowing visitors to unwind and immerse themselves in the simple pleasures of rural life. We just finished (well 2 years ago) traveling the country in an RV with five of our 7 kids (oldest two were in college) and we had a terrible time finding places to stay in Saint Augustine when we came home to visit. I hope that we can offer some nice people a safe and beautiful place to park their rig. Things to do: The property is near the historic St. Augustine, a fun walkable/bikeable city, lots of state parks and of course an awesome beach! Other things to note: 6 Miles away is 4 Lakes Campground with dumping facilities

Call us bias, but there’s nothing better than small town life. When the "blue roof cottage by the tracks" (yes, it used to have a unique blue roof) hit the market in early 2021, we knew it had to be ours! We purchased it & flipped it into a vacation home for guests of Folkston .. and The Conductor's Corner was born. Because we are also avid RV'ers, we thought what better way to finish off our corner than to add a few first-class RV sites to accommodate the camping community. We hope you enjoy your stay on our corner! In a small town in the south, where the Okefenokee Swamp runs deep and railfans thrive, the Conductor’s Corner stands out. The Conductor’s Corner features 3 premium RV sites directly on the rail lines of the Folkston Funnel. This railfan's dream neighbors the Folkston Railfan Train Platform. The spacious concrete pads are perfect for a night of watching trains under the stars. 20x50 concrete pads with 30/50 amp power, water, sewer, Wifi & picnic tables. A quick 3 minute walk from the Conductor’s Corner will lead to the heart of Main Street where visitors will find a plethora of hidden treasures: coffee shops, boutiques, local eateries, the Train Museum and so much more. Guests could spend a day exploring the habitats and waterways of the Okefenokee Swamp or take a short drive to neighboring communities such as Cumberland Island, Savannah, Golden Isles or Amelia Island or Jacksonville in Florida. All the comforts of home and the utmost southern hospitality are included in your stay on our corner. The Conductor's Corner also includes a vacation cottage available for rent (sleeps 6).

Overview

About

Before the British, there was a French settlement in northern Florida that attempted to rival claims made by the Spanish in the New World. When you visit La Caroline, you get a taste of what it was like to be the small kid on the playground. The fort attempts to show what life was like for a small colony of French people trying to find religious freedom in a faraway land.

The exact location of the settlement isn't known, but La Caroline memorializes the area where the French tried to eke out a living among a swampy, wild land. It did not go well. Not everyone was a soldier, and few knew how to survive in an untamed land. Some people brought fine clothing and gold. Artists were on hand to record the events as they unfolded.

Today, a visit to the fort means people in period costume that take you back more than 450 years. The living history exhibit puts you in the middle of a struggle make a home in the New World.

Fort Caroline dates back to 1564 when France wanted to have a piece of North America. The Spanish had already taken over much of South America, but they wanted more when they set up St. Augustine in Florida. Somewhere in the Jacksonville area, around 300 French settlers decided to set up a permanent presence in North America.

The Spanish didn't want any rivals in Florida. When the Spanish attacked the fort in 1565, the French were badly outnumbered. Around 500 soldiers marched into La Caroline. Nearly 50 people escaped onto a French boat and set sail, while the Spanish soldiers spared only 60 of the 200 who were left behind.
