About 15 minutes to tube rentals to float the river in San Marcos. The San Marcos outlet malls are a shower trip. An approximate 30 minute trip to Wimberly, TX wineries. There are wildflowers all over the property; especially in the spring time. We have seen deer grazing on the property and some travelers have found fossils and arrowheads (no guarantees of course). Weekend Trip to Boulderdash Cabin & Camping

Bf and I went for an anniversary. It was just a little hard to find, but Carol-Anne explains all that online. I did love the amount of detail provided to campers before arrival, since I’m a planner and like to know the fine details of what a trip will be like environmentally. Carol-Anne was so kind!!! She has an amazing personality and let us do our thing while making sure we were informed. You can feed deer, borrow a hammock, get tinder and firewood, access a ton of nice optional amenities, and just enjoy being outdoors. Our spot was PERFECT. The site was closer to the neighboring site than I thought, but far enough away that the loud college kids didn’t really bother us. We arrived at 8 and got set up after the easiest check-in ever, found our spot, got situated, and there was a fire pit, a picnic table, complementary wildlife food, a nearby potty with cool facts about the place and owners, a softly lit tap sink and hose water and charging station that had a citronella candle, and a short walk from the site through some rocks to the river. The pictures do not do it justice! It was breathtaking, so fun to explore, had a nice bluff, tubing and swimming opportunities, space to sit and read in the water, and enough peace and privacy for a romantic getaway. It was priced well, too! It was so cool to share some love in a tent listening to the river or night swimming watching fishies, finding fun rocks, and being with like-minded folks with such positive energy! We’ll be back!

The view from our site was gorgeous and it was so easy to get to the water. The site was very clean, the facilities were clean and taken care of, and the extras were nice to have. Town isn't far if you need to get ice or small things. The biggest issue here were the ants. They were absolutely horrible. We bought spray and they still were just taking over. I myself have over 40 bites on just my legs. My kids have some and my parents got bit up as well. I would love to recommend this place and understand the site's are "wild" but definitely needs some pest control

First thing first, since this is about getaway, this place is not too far from the city, but definitely gets you out from the city. In the middle of nature, you can see deers, lizards, ducks, and lot more. The place is very cute and my wife and I loved being here for 2 nights. The host is very caring, she lives on the site and she helped us with anything she could do to make our stay feel better. I recommend this place to anyone looking for a getaway not too far from Austin, I am planning to come back with my daughter next time.

Great space. The river was beautiful and clear. Not too far from the lake. Firewood already cut for purchase. Warm showers. AC bathrooms. Running water. Camp sites are nice. I stayed at River 4. This one and 2 have the most shade of the river spots which was clutch. Fire pits have the grills you can put over the flames. Picnic tables were clean. Only issue was the dogs barking which they mention in the info. It’s like 4 different neighboring dogs all barking at each other lol. I didn’t have my phone on me to call but they woke us up 3 or 4x the first night. Friday night. Second night they were quiet and we didn’t hear a peep. Will be back.

We stayed in August, so while it was a bit hot in the middle of the day, the AC in the cabin, outdoor shower, and bathtub provided lots of ways to cool down. Weekend Trip to Sparrow Bend River Retreat

Sparrow Bend River Retreat was a lovely place to camp. Even though it was August, the shade and the river meant that we were not too uncomfortable. The campsite was tidy with a nice table and grill top over the fire pit. The land is a little sloped on campsite 1, but we found a few flat spots that worked for our tent. The whole place has an eclectic vibe with various little buildings scattered around, communal feeling with string lights, etc. The outhouses were actually clean, with flush toilets and A/C units. One shared sink outside that was frequently used but had soap and towels available. Staying only one night was a little on the pricey side because of the added fee, but had we stayed 2 or 3 nights it wouldn't have felt expensive. The river area is not shaded but it is not crowded like public spaces. There are beautiful bluffs and huge boulders across the river. The best thing was probably the excellent information about the site, the directions, the amenities from Sparrow Bend. Thanks for the stay!

We're a five acre piece of an historic Texas ranch in Southwest San Antonio, just 20-minutes from downtown, sitting along the Medina River. Come for the day or stay the night for some primitive camping. We've got plenty of room for tents, roof-top-tent setups or car/van dry-camping. We’re currently in the building/restoring process, but we’ll have some electrical, drinking water, fire pits, plenty of shade, compost toilets, water in the river, and plenty of good vibes. Old Herrera Ranch has been in our family since the early 1800's and holds a lot history. A couple of our old buildings, the "jacals", are dated from around the 1830-40's. You'll also see the old "Dance Hall" which is great for hanging out or even some cover if it rains. They say that Santa Anna's army, invading from Mexico, may have crossed through our area on their way to the Alamo. This may be because our part of the river includes some of the more shallow areas of the Medina River. Heavily wooded acreage with goats, horses and donkeys. There is no light pollution and if there are no clouds you can see the stars very clearly. We have a ton of wild birds. Owls and Cara Cara are common. There are deer, feral hog and two resident packs of coyote. We also have ring tail cats, which are nocturnal and rare. The best seasons are October 1st thru the end of April. It gets VERY hot and dry in the summer and can just be miserable. We have a shared bathroom and an outdoor shower and tub. If you are a single woman or a family with children, we don't take other bookings while you are visiting the farm. You will have the place to yourselves. The only exception being my family and I, if we are working or staying over at the farm. We should have a second bunkhouse up and running by fall of 2025. If you are tent camping, you may camp anywhere on the property but there are certain spaces that may make curious horses your roomies.

The central building has indoor lodging available and the side bathroom with indoor toilet / washer / dryer may be used by campers as well. A new outdoor shower is 95% complete and usable but swimwear is required because we have not finished filling in the slots between the wood fence panels.
