I was fortunate to acquire this land 20 years ago and now that I have retired from the United States Air Force, I can dedicate time to create peaceful campsites along the river. This land was originally railroad property as the railroad companies bought much land in the late 1800's to have options to place their railroads. There is still a railroad track nearby but it has been unused since 2015 and it makes a nice hiking path along the river for many miles to the north into the national forest. There are 3 waterfalls nearby and I will have many signs leading to the waterfalls. There are 4 total campsites on the property, 1 site you can drive to (Eagle Pines), and 3 tent sites that require 1/8 mile hike to 2 sites, and a 1/4 mile hike to the other hike-in site.

The campground and rental house will open about May 15, each year. The English Pale Campground is located along the Black River in Jackson County, 1 mile west of the Village of Melrose. The entire property only allows guests and occupants who are 21 or older. Sites/house can be booked 6 months in advance. The main campground is 70 feet above the river. We have 5 rustic (no hook-ups) RV/Travel Trailer/Tent sites, a fully furnished “Manor” House, a travel trailer as well as 2 rustic beach sites that are located along the river. The property is a total of 70 acres, which includes the 4+ acre beach, a mile of river front and trails through the woods that connect them all. The English Pale opened in 2021 and is a developing property. In late summer of 2025 an erosion wall was built along the Black River. This included clearing of a section of the forest, building a gravel access road and an riprap river wall to prevent further erosion. Since 2016 over 60 feet of the riverbank has washed away. Our property offers a reasonable expectation of privacy and we do not offer day passes as our target guests are campers. We are an adult only property, but not a nudist campground, as that is not our central theme. We do not prohibit our guests from nudity for the purpose of sunbathing on the beach, campsites or sundeck, but nudity is not allowed in general common areas. Part of our nature is allowing discreet nudity for tanning purposes. While we target couples for time together, singles and groups are welcome. The Chippewa County Forest (over 10,000 acres) Hickory Ridge Trailhead is located about 5 miles away. You can enjoy miles of hiking, biking, ATV or horseback riding trails. Trails wind past small lakes and beaver ponds, as well as spectacular vistas and abundant wild life. LIST OF SITES (all of our sites now include a portable toilet, firewood, fire ring, water, power, picnic table and/or chairs). BIRCH Waterfront is named for the beautiful birch trees that frame your view of the lake that also includes soothing evening loon sounds :) It is our medium size campsite with a level gravel and grass pad with lakefront access via the long wooded dock and an included row boat for fishing and boating. EAGLE POINT Waterfront is a favorite because it is the most private, surrounded by trees and is on a elevated waterfront lot with steps down to a dock. This site has a canoe and a row boat and the best spectacular sunset views. The eagle's nest is in a tall pine tree above the steps! BOB LAKE WEST Waterfront is our only site that is not on this dead end road. It is located on the west side of the lake near the boat landing. This site has a bonus small storage shed which could be a cool kids cabin. It is partially wooded elevated site with stunning sunrise views. WOODED RUSTIC is a non-waterfront campsite for both tents or RV's that has been updated to a site with power and water and includes access to the lake and a row boat at our common access which is only about 200 yards down the road from this site. RV's can park on the gravel pad and tent guests can setup down the walking trail in the woods. This property was previously owned by Trapper Art who was well known in the area and started several successful businesses dating back to 1967 including Art's Snowmobile, Trapper Arts, and Art's Electric which was quite an accomplishment in the Wisconsin Northwoods!

Tranquil and quiet sanctuary on 40 acres of gorgeous mixed terrain, open for your enjoyment and recreation! A 12 acre lake with amazing wildlife/birdwatching, 20 acres of wooded trails for hiking or mtn biking, a 6 acre meadow, gorgeous sunsets and night skies, and whatever else you make of it. All this just an hour from the Twin Cities and directly off a county road for simple access. Our sites prioritize privacy and coziness with the aesthetic of the natural environment in its pure state for your enjoyment. They come with a free bundle of firewood, and kayaks are available to rent for a modest fee. Note in planning your trip: we are blessed to be immersed in all aspects of Wisconsin culture, and that includes an occassional gun shoot! The nearby Amery Sportsmans Club has regular skeet shooting hours just twice per week, Sundays 11-2pm, and Tuesdays 5-8 pm. It can be quite noisy for an otherwise blissful environment! Tuesday bookings are therefore 1/2 off, and please keep this in mind should you want to extend your stay into Sunday afternoons during the warm seasons.

Wow! What a magical place. I had an amazing time camping at Eagle Pines On The Bad River and spending a gorgeous exploring Deans land. He’s clearly put much time and care into building and maintaining the trails. The map, signs and ribbons were very helpful for navigating the area. It was an absolute delight and adventure hiking the trails and wandering around the three waterfalls. Dean was also an excellent host. He was incredibly accommodating, responded quickly to my messages and provided very detailed instructions and recommendations upon booking. I highly recommend these sites to anyone wanting a peaceful, somewhat rustic and secluded spot to stargaze, canoe/kayak, hike and commune with the land and water. I hope to visit again soon.

What a beautiful property! We loved camping in an oak grove in the fall time - golden and heavenly! The lake was beautiful, and even though it's the weather wasn't conducive to swimming, we thoroughly enjoyed reading on the dock. Everything about the site was as described and made camping with our 34' fifth wheel a breeze. We will be back!

I ended up driving in a bit later than anticipated and it was more difficult to find after sunset, so I agree with the host in that arriving before sunset is best. The stars were beautiful and it was peacefully quiet the entire time. I was so cozy, thank you for letting me stay!

Loved our time at this spot! Beautiful camp with amazing giant pine trees and a great setting on the river. Definitely plan to return! The river was low at this time of the year, but still managed to get out on the canoe provided and that was a great surprise to have available. We even saw a pair of swans!

Such a great retreat from the city! I used the provided kayak for a sunset paddle and the firewood was at site as well. Gorgeous sunset and even better sunrise! Quiet, private, and the view was stunning. I took a bunch of photos to make oil paintings. Bob Ross! Haha The host was so great helping me back out on my tear drop’s maiden voyage. Nice guy! Thanks Adam! Only an hour from TC and plenty of places to stock up for needs along the way. Loved it.

First impression I thought I was lost, that’s the point right? Very responsive to communication and flexible. Escorted by farm tractor to location, let me see different sights to pick from. I picked tucked in the woods for some seclusion. Brought my two dogs and they loved running in the 3 different fields close by, we even visited the goats multiple times to give them some weeds. 2 other sites were being used but you would never know it. Would visit again for a quick getaway.

Great location! Beautiful spot right on the river. Very friendly workers at the lodge as well. Might not be for the kind of camper who just wants to sit at their site all day but if you're lookong for an adventure down the river or to get some mileage on the beautiful bike trails then this is an AMAZING spot.
