Located on Mount Hood about an hour from Portland, Zigzag Mountain Farm is home to an organic garden, old homestead, house, yurts, and barn. 50 acres of open meadows and forest, bordering thousands of acres of national forest.
The farm is home to an organic garden, campfire circle, picnic area, a city bus with a campers' kitchen, outdoor seating area with BBQ, kids play structure and hiking trails.
The cabin on the property was built by the original homesteaders. Britta and Jim purchased the property in 2009. It had been vacant for a number of years. Giant slash piles scattered the land from previous logging.
The house and cabin were not livable and needed major renovations. In 2019, we purchased and brought in a city bus and converted it to a campers kitchen.
A year-round creek flows through the property and 3 major rivers are nearby. The Zigzag Mountain Lookout Trail leaves from the property. The property was homesteaded in the early 1900's. E. Mountain Drive was the wagon train trail into Portland, known as the Barlow Trail.
Zigzag Mountain Farm offers the perfect escape from the city.

GeerCrest Farm was settled by the Geer family in 1848, and is still owned and stewarded by the family. The house Ralph and Mary Geer built in 1851 stands and is one of the oldest in Oregon to remain in the same family.
The farm features creeks, forests, pastures, orchards and gardens as well as the historic buildings. Currently we have four friendly sheep and a small flock of Mallard ducks to keep us company. The Pioneer Memorial Orchard features over 50 vairieties of pre 1850 apple trees. The Heritage Grove has ten fruit and nut trees that were recognizeds as a memorial the the early pioneers of the nursery trade by Oregon Heritage Tree program. The 20 acre property, offers three tent camp sites Including the Tree House site, as well as two forest cabins and a small forest bunkhouse (sleeps 6).
Our peaceful, small farm offers a reflective immersion in nature and history among the occasional quacking of ducks and baaas of sheep. The scenery from all corners of the farm is incredible - a favorite is the westward view of the valley pasture at sunset -- called "Homer's View" after famous political cartoonist and Geer descendant, Homer Davenport. No matter which camping site you choose, the sounds of the creek, pond frogs, or conversing owls are sure to lull you to sleep.
Feel free to roam the farm, but always leave gates as you find them, open or closed. Please say hello to our sheep and barn cats (they may say hello first). Explore the Heritage Grove of historic trees, the Memorial apple orchard and pear glade with varieties circa 1840s, indulge your senses in our medicinal herb garden, and chat with our farm family while they water the veggie gardens, if you so wish! Your experience will certainly be unique to the season.
Your host Jim Toler represents the fifth generation of the farm and will happily share stories of the farm and it's history.

*Please note, while we have no direct neighbors, we are in a narrow river canyon. There is an active farm and wedding venue across the river. You may hear distant noise of their operations or events, depending on the season. There is also a quarry across the road that operates M-F, from 8a-3p that sometimes can be heard sporadically throughout the day.

Our property has been in business in one way or another for over 70 years. The stick built cabins are pre 1950's and no one really knows for sure how old they truly are. We are located on Fort Creek named after the creek that ran through Fort Klamath. Fort Creek is a beautiful 30' wide meandering creek that runs the length of the property north to south. We offer free use of our Old Town Canoes to paddle along it's extent and on up creek to a beaver damn. There is a fun hiking trail that runs over two bridges that span the creek, one covered and one floating. We also offer free catch and release fishing, there are Rainbow and Brown Trout in our waters.
Fort Klamath is the birthplace and home of the US Army 1st Cavalry and our property is located on the the Forts Southeastern grounds. We are 9 miles from the southern border of the National Park and 23 miles from the southern Rim and Rim Village.

It was a wonderful place to bring the grandkids! They want to come back. It's beautiful and tree filled and right by the river. The "guard" chickens are so entertaining. And "Butters" the cat is angelic. The cabin and camp space are well appointed. We loved the outdoor kitchen and fire ring. The hosts are very pleasant and accommodating and they've anticipated everything. We definitely hope to return.

Second time staying on Jim's farm. Last year we stayed in the tree house. This year me and my girls and a friend and her girls each rented one of the cabins. We had a blast. It's such a magical little set-up. We had everything we needed to pull in, quickly unpack and get to enjoying our stay and exploring the farm. All four kids and both parents already want to go back.

He also offered for my daughter to feed the ducks the next morning (the entire reason we stayed was to see the ducks). Cabin was cozy, clean and perfect. The property is beautiful and private creek access is so enjoyable. The studio is beautiful and spacious. It is perhaps the most well-appointed and supplied studio/room I've rented. There is enough kitchen equipment that one can make simple meals. Lovely, welcoming hosts with great intentions for their property and excellent communication and response times. A great getaway spot for a quiet forest retreat.

Cute little cabin! Very private. There is some light night noise from a local plant (or factory?) but they provide earplugs, but noise is expected since it’s not the middle of nowhere! Really great communal space with a much of tables and couches and flush toilets and sink for hand washing. Very comfy bed.

4 nights at Steelhead Camp on the Chetco River
This A-frame is a great alternative to tent camping. No power or water but you don't get that with tent camping either. At least this cabin has two beds. We loved hanging out on the back deck and stargazing at night.
If you're coming from a ways away, type in Salmon Run golf course off S Bank Chetco River Rd. The directions you'll be emailed will take you from there.
Regarding the toilet, you have to do a gravity flush. I was very familiar because that's how I flushed toilets when I was traveling through Thailand. Don't bother with the plunger as Jess suggests, it's not effective. Just use a pot or bucket and fill it with water. Then all at once, pour it into the toilet bowl (not the tank) and it will force a flush. If it doesn't flush the first time, add another pot of water, especially for #2.
We booked 4 nights, and every morning around 5:15 am, we would be awaken with clattering and ruckus downstairs. The first morning it happened, I was frightened, as I thought there was an intruder in the cabin. I wrote Jess, just to ask if she might know what it was because after I investigated I couldn't find anything. Jess was immediately agitated and defensive with me. I told her I was simply hoping she could put my mind at a ease. She did the opposite.
The next morning when we were awakened again at 5:15, we got the lights on fast enough and discovered RATS. Big ones, climbing up the walls!!
Jess, get a rodent specialist out there, take care of the problem, and be nicer.

Jim’s loft cabins were the best deal we he had among the 4 Hipcamp places we stayed at during our 9-day tour of Oregon. A great base for our visit to Silver Falls. Jim was very hospitable & provided firewood too. Loft had Silver Falls Park maps to help us plan our visit. Plus a very friendly cat, whose company we enjoyed.
