Located on Mount Hood about an hour from Portland, Zigzag Mountain Farm is home to an organic garden, old homestead, house, yurts, and barn. 50 acres of open meadows and forest, bordering thousands of acres of national forest. The farm is home to an organic garden, campfire circle, picnic area, a city bus with a campers' kitchen, outdoor seating area with BBQ, kids play structure and hiking trails. The cabin on the property was built by the original homesteaders. Britta and Jim purchased the property in 2009. It had been vacant for a number of years. Giant slash piles scattered the land from previous logging. The house and cabin were not livable and needed major renovations. In 2019, we purchased and brought in a city bus and converted it to a campers kitchen. A year-round creek flows through the property and 3 major rivers are nearby. The Zigzag Mountain Lookout Trail leaves from the property. The property was homesteaded in the early 1900's. E. Mountain Drive was the wagon train trail into Portland, known as the Barlow Trail. Zigzag Mountain Farm offers the perfect escape from the city.

You choose an area, e.g. forest camp, or a meadow, to set up your tent, one tent included per booking (up to 2 people included in rate; extra people can be added upon arrival for $5/adult plus lodging tax). The farm is home to an organic garden, campfire circle, picnic area, a city bus converted into a campers' kitchen, outdoor seating area with BBQ, kids play structure and hiking trails. Our two-story restored historic cabin was built by the original homesteaders in 1909. It’s a large, rustic, and comfortable space with two bedrooms, a private bath (tub/shower, sink, and toilet), a large living room with wood stove and hide-a-bed, fully equipped kitchen, and a wrap-around porch by the creek. The cabin comes with linens, towels, a heating system, and wifi. An additional common bathroom, attached to the cabin but with its own outside entrance, is available and shared with campers.

There was plenty of space to pitch a tent and park. The price was affordable for what was available. By no means did we expect a private campsite, but the other campers or residents of the farm were unreasonably loud the first night of our stay and that kept us up past 1:30am and our sleep suffered. Also, we chose not to use certain amenities that attracted us to this listing, such as the shower or the sink, as there was information posted that the water source was contaminated with trace amounts of e. coli, which can make you sick if it gets in your mouth, eyes, or open wounds.

The property is really nice and had many thoughtful touches. We loved sitting on the deck and being able to camp all by ourselves in the north forest but still have easy access to real bathrooms! We didn't make use of the kitchen bus but it was very cool to see. I appreciated the thorough tour from staff and lists of local restaurants and trails. The sweet pet rabbits were the perfect finishing touch!

We were in Forest Camp--a big, quiet site. We wheelbarrowed everything into camp the first night as instructed, only to find out, on our last day, that we could have parked the car 15 paces from camp -(which worked out well as serious rain showers hit, lol.) Staff very helpful and fun. Shout out to Danny! Enjoyed hikes around area. Beautiful setting. Will definitely return!

This was a great campground, cozy with lots of amenities, and the staff was thorough and friendly. We loved that Zigzag was more than a campground, but members of their Mt. Hood community. Would absolutely go back.

I had a wonderful experience in the North Forest area doing tent camping. I happened to be the only one in this area for the duration of my stay and had a truly peaceful and cozy stay. I was thrilled to have almost too many spots to set up a hammock and the 1 mile loop trail was fun and pretty! Wonderful staff and well maintained overall; North Forest area had clear trails that even a rolling cooler could get through and lots of cleared spots that allow for cool tent setup options. I would definitely come again!

We loved camping at the this site. We took our 6 y/o granddaughter on her first camping trip. She loved the wooded spot for our tent site, and she enjoyed the playground. We were pleased with the amenities, particularly the cooking station in the bus. The staff were friendly and kind. The location is perfect for area hikes and sightseeing.

These are not actually campsites they are just small, cleared spaces on the property. No table, no fire pit, very small, not very flat. You also cannot park at the site, you have to park away from your site and haul all your stuff over. There is a small bathroom with showers but they are shared with all, not separated by sex. In the future I would choose to dispersed camp over paying to stay here.

This turned out to be a very good spot, I was initially worried walking into the “tent” sites area. We enjoyed our stay getting to visit with other campers in the common areas. Property is beautiful. Be aware this is a very communal area and you camp away from your vehicle. Rent a van site if wanting something private by your vehicle.

This spot is truly dope what a gem. Dispersed camping in multiple areas just book and when you pull up they have you find a spot. They have tons of amenities and mount hood is a short jaunt, lots of lakes to swim in for the day, 10/10 will be back next summer

We went during the week day and there was no other campers so it was super nice for us. I imagine on very busy weekends and holidays it can get very packed and you might have limited space. But either way I would recommend them for the amenities it was super nice to not have to put up our own camping stove for once. They included a microwave, and gas stove in their bus. However I booked for the showers and they ended up being low on water so possibly check in with them before if possible if that’s what you are also booking for!

This was a lovely place. We camped in our minivan. The area was beautiful. I liked the cool converted bus kitchen space and that there were flush toilets. Easy nature trail around the property. I would stay there again.

This place is a delightful gem and a perfect home base for exploring the areas near and around Mt Hood. The only pitfall was the lack of running water during our stay and the daily false promise that “the pump is being fixed tomorrow” (The owner conveniently addressed the issue on Friday for the weekend rush, his words.) Myself and two friends stayed here from Tuesday until Saturday, while in the area we snowboarded, hiked and swam everyday from sun up until sundown. We felt comfortable knowing our camp and belongings were safe at the farm. The staff is pleasant, conversational, and helpful. Each campsite is varied and offer enough privacy to have a peaceful nights sleep without being woken up by neighboring campers. A converted bus kitchen is well equipped for all kinds of cooking and the facilities are clean and of acceptable standards when operational. I’d suggest coming during the weekdays for a more peaceful experience and to connect with other traveling adults around the communal fire pit, the bus kitchen, etc. The weekends seem to be for a more bustling family oriented environment, at least from what I witnessed during check out on Saturday morning with kids on the playground running through the grass and riding their bikes around the grounds. When everything is operational it is a great combination of comfort and country. I’d give them a 9/10 if it weren’t for being mislead about the water issue. 48 more characters left so shout out to the staff Misheala and Tobias👍

I truly enjoyed my time at the zigzag farm. The young person who checked me in whose name I cannot remember right now, but they were from Detroit. They were kind, friendly, and accommodating. I was able to move to a small van camping spot so that I could have my car with me. I greatly appreciate it as I have a very bad back and it’s hard for me to haul my stuff. However, the tent camping spots are beautiful. I loved the community Bus kitchen/living room area. They provided a small coffee pot or a French press minimal cookware a gas stove to cook fun and a little refrigerator to keep my cold things in. It was just perfect. There’s a beautiful garden and a nice smile loop. The air on the farm smelled so fragrant. And there is a little creek running under the road that you can walk down and stick your feet in. The first night I stayed the other visitors, started a bonfire, and we all sat around visiting learning about where we all came from. It was great sharing and hearing stories. Zigzag camp is conveniently located. There is a Thriftway right down the road. The best coffee I found at Fernies their bagel sandwiches were to die for! Trillium Lake, government camp little zigzag Falls. The Sam viewing area are all very close by. I will be back. Thank you again for hosting me ! Michele

The campgrounds are beautiful and very peaceful. My campsite was on the smaller side but perfect for just me and my dog and it felt private enough. My biggest gripe was not being able to cook at my site; there's no fire pit nor any flat surfaces for my burner. They have a communal area for dining with a couple grills and an old trimet bus that's been converted into a kitchen that's well-equipped. It's cute, but it forces you to be with others and ya know sometimes you just want to camp to get away from it all-- and that includes people ;-)

Stayed in the Forest section of Zigzag shortly after 4th of July. Very well maintained area and awesome amenities. The converted bus with a kitchen was such a luxury. Not having to buy fire wood was a huge plus as well. Lastly, I was happy to see that even though the camp site was a walk-up spot that there was a spot to drop off items and we didn’t have to walk too far. The location of zigzag’s land was amazing and close to Mt Hood. 10/10 recommend and will be back in the future.

A nice, friendly alternative to a formal campground. Lots of campsites in the woods, a garden, clean showers and bathrooms. Beautiful hiking trails through an almost entirely native forest are a real treat. Would stay again.
