Gumtree Dam Highlands

12 sites · Lodging, RVs, Tents25 acres · Abington, QLD
We welcome you to our peaceful farm retreat. Each site has lots of room and a fire pit, there is potable water available and porta loos, shower too made out of a horse float, which is for guests who are not self-contained. Have a look though it is quite cute. We have 7 gorgeous Scottish Highlands, the Scottish folk pronounce it "Heilen Coos" so that's how we say it, I'm not spelling it wrong 🤩😆You'll meet Kelvin the Scottish Highland Bull, Oakley her calf Lucy, Willow and her calf Ferdinand (Ferdi), and our new additions Dusty and Maddi, they can be both fun and relaxing to watch doing zoomies around the yard, swimming in the dam or chilling under a tree 😁 Keep in mind from December to March we have hot, rainy summers. For the adventurous campers who use swags/tents, we suggest a stretcher and a gazebo with walls for a little comfort. Some areas need 4wd also. Check in is after 1pm and check out is strictly before 10.30am, we promise you will get your 'Heilen Coo' fix 😝 We have Souvineers and firewood please bring cash 😍 Be mindful around all animals as they get to know you, be smart please. Kids can bring bikes, must be supervised at all times, no screaming or running. Pets are welcome, we have 2 dogs Jesse and Cane, who are both very friendly. Our Maremma is an Italian breed of livestock gaurdian dog, he does bark a little at night to protect our pets, which goes hand in hand with all of our other farm noises 😉 Our Neighbours have fish farms, you may hear the odd gun go off, just to scare the shags away from feeding in the ponds. It's totally safe. Feel free to put on some music and have a few drinks by the campfire, but we want our farm to be a place where our animals and our guests feel safe and relaxed, so we do not accommodate noisy parties. Relax and unwind with a book or go for a bush walk and listen to the kookaburras. Watch Sea Eagles, pelican, wild budgies, rainbow lorikeet and more. All your cares will feel like they are a million miles away as you soak up nature, we guarantee you will have an amazing experience. 6 Kms in at our historic Childers there is a Woolworths, IGA, great pubs for lunch, cafes and bakeries, plus a swimming pool, museum, snakes down under and Woodgate beach 25 mins away.

Farm camping near Burrum Heads guide

Overview

Just minutes from the tourist crowds of Fraser Island, the fishing village of Burrum Heads offers a tranquil retreat. Sandy shores and natural waterholes provide plenty of spots for swimming and water sports, or you can enjoy fishing along the coast and paddling along the Isis and Burrum rivers. Check into a holiday park or caravan park in town, park your campervan at a peaceful countryside Hipcamp, or snag a spot by the beachside. North of town, go hiking, canoeing, and bird-watching at Burrum Coast National Park, where the Kinkuna and Burrum Point camping areas have space for tents and camper trailers.

Where to go

Bundaberg region

North of Burrum Heads, Bundaberg is best known as the home of iconic Aussie beverages—Bundaberg Rum and Bundaberg Ginger Beer. Factory and distillery tours are a must-do for visitors, after which you can head to coastal Bargara to camp by the beach, spot turtles at Mon Repos Conservation Park, or cruise out to snorkel and scuba dive along the southern Great Barrier Reef. For the ultimate adventure, how about bush camping on Lady Musgrave Island?

Fraser Coast

Burrum Heads sits on the northern edge of the Fraser Coast, where highlights include whale-watching in Hervey Bay, the heritage town of Maryborough, and the Urangan Pier near Torquay. Further south, Fraser Island is the headline act of the Great Sandy National Park, but the mainland Cooloola area has tent and caravan campsites, and is the starting point of the Great Beach Drive from Rainbow Beach to Noosa Heads.

Fraser Island

Blanketed with sandy beaches, sweeping dunes, and dense rainforest, the natural beauty of Fraser Island has put it firmly on the map for adventurers. Explore scenic 4WD trails, admire natural wonders such as the Champagne Pools and the Pinnacles, or swim and kayak at Lake McKenzie. Campers can take their pick of unpowered sites along 75 Mile Beach—you can even pitch a tent right on the sand.

When to go

Year-round sunshine and great fishing make Burrum Heads a four-season destination, but the summer months are the most popular. It’s worth timing your trip to fit with seasonal activities and wildlife-watching opportunities. November through March is the time for turtle-watching and bird-watching, while August through October is whale-watching season and has cooler weather ideal for hiking.
