While Berkeley is part of the highly urban Bay Area, if you're willing to drive just a bit, you can find nearby camping options that let you get out of the city and under the open sky. Enjoy roughing it within sight of San Francisco and the Oakland Bay Bridge when you take the ferry ride to Angel Island State Park; be prepared to hike a couple of miles to get to your campsite. Across the Bay, Mount Tamalpais State Park puts you right over the Pacific Ocean. Pitch your tent or opt for cabins from the 1940s, and don't miss the nighttime astronomy lecture at the mountain theater. Head inland from Berkeley, and you may find yourself 3,000 feet high and enjoying expansive views from Mount Diablo State Park. Enjoy glamping at Whiskey Ranch, where you can luxuriate in a tipi that features a queen-sized bed, rugs, and a solar charger for your mobile devices. Ask them about hosting your next retreat or family reunion as well.

Even if they don't feel like going on walk they will be better because of it
I was shocked that three beds could fit in here comfortably, but I was proven wrong (one of many times).
The outside canvas (and floor) of the yurt is repurposed billboard!
Not many places can comfortably sleep our family of 5 and we were surprised how much room there was in this small yurt
A short hike up the road, and towards the other sites can lead to some great sunrise views of the surrounding area.

Park your car camper, van or small trailer in front of our 1934 bomb storage magazine. There's a restroom right there and a nice quiet spot to hang out.
Views of 7 Bay Area counties and the San Pablo Bay, Mt. Tam, Mt Diablo, the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. Wow!
Our visitor center with its bright yellow striped tent and campfire is where the food prep area is, a nice propane grill, a camp stove. Cozy and comfy place to hang out inside or out.

It's a lovely quiet and quirky spot...our Mare Island Preserve. It's located on the southern end of Mare Island on the Navy's oldest Ammo Depot in the Pacific (160 this year). We've got wide open spaces and great hiking.

our camp spots are simple mowed areas along an old railroad track minus the tracks, but close to the visitor center, campfire, cooking and portable restrooms.

After you set up your tent be sure to explore the property and meet the animals. There are chickens, turkeys, goats, emus, a burro, doves, a llama, cats, and dogs.
The burro likes carrots better than apples, if you happen to have any.
I stayed after a rainstorm and everything was green and lush.
Bring an apple to make friends with this sweet llama.
