This spot is best for a van camp location but plenty of space for tents and hammocks. You'll find a drive-up deck if you wish to park there. Firewood is available providing you use downfalls as kindling in the stone fire pit. A 8x20' deck and picnic table are 20 feet from the fire for stargazing. When the ferns are full grown they are 3 feet tall and everywhere. A 10 minute walk takes you through a dense pine forest with large rock formations and a nice creek with many gurgling fall areas. If there looks like a cave amongst the large rocks, then it probably is a bear den. There is a lot to do near by. Some note worthy locations : Cranberry Glade Lake (good for kayaking or fishing), Ohiopyle, 7 Springs, Fallingwater, Living Treasures, Caddie Shak, and Hidden Valley are all about 25 minutes away. This property also borders Laurel Ridge State Park. There is a Dollar General and a gas station about 15 minutes away for convenience needs.

Learn more about this land: This wooded area is 5 miles away from the Ohiopyle State Park whitewater launch area and GAP bike trail. We are less than 9 miles from Frank Lloyd Wright's Classic Fallingwater and about 8 miles from Kentuck Knob one of the last resident homes he designed (both are open for tours). Fort Necessity National Battlefield is 5 miles away. There are numerous native trout streams in the area. Youghiogheny Reservoir is 7 miles away for fishing, boat rentals, and water-sports. The Fern House is the primary camp cabin on the property. Although if someone would want to park a "self contained" camper or small RV on the property we would permit the unit to occupy the area in front of the driveway just pass the entrance gate. It is not within the ferns and is next to the road. There is an electrical outlet available at this small RV or van camper site. We are "nice pet" friendly. Dogs should not be left in the cabin alone. We have a mountain spring (when the spring is running) up the trail road (450 feet away). The ferns will normally be in full glory by the end of May to mid September and are amazing, covering the forest floor. Deer, bear, wild turkey, fox, chipmunks, squirrels and many woodland birds abound the property especially owls. A picnic table, fire ring and firewood is available on the property. Free WiFi on the property as long as the plant life is not too thick! There is a mile hiking loop right on the property and many challenging trails in the area, including the starting point for the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. No smoking is permitted in the cabin. My father tells stories of it being filled with guests all summer long! Over the years there was few upgrades and now it's in need of a facelift. Landscaping, electric upgrades and bathhouse remodels were completed Spring 2021. We will continue to renovate in phases it's been a labor of love, but you can still see the beauty of this rural location and enjoy the peace and quiet. Hope you enjoy your stay. Lots of trees, shade and nature. It's located near New Germany State Park, 1.5 miles by car, less than a mile by foot. The state park has a lake and hiking trails. Garrett County has so much to offer, waterfalls, lakes, hiking, skiing, Amish gifts, history, fresh air, beautiful scenery. The campground was first started in 1964 by my grandparents, we are currently completing renovations in phases.

This area was purchased by a local church congregation and has been transformed into a fun, peaceful picnic/recreation area. We enjoy using this area for picnics, birthday/graduation parties, family reunions and other fun, meaningful events. We have even had a few weddings here. The world class Wisp resort and Deep Creek Lake are only minutes away. “Yough” is short for Youghiogheny River a state designated wild and scenic river which runs through the heart of the property. Wild Yough Glamping huts are part of more than 350 acres of private land, most of which is crisscrossed with hiking and biking trails. Youghiogheny is an Algonquin word meaning “a stream flowing in a contrary direction”, or in the case of the Yough, North toward Ohio Pyle and Pittsburgh. This section of the river is designated as a protected scenic corridor and you will feel the quiet isolation when sitting on the Crooked Butt Bench overlooking the big horseshoe bend in the river at the far back corner of our property. And if the river is low during your visit, feel free to wade across to the other side – Wild Yough owns the entire peninsula of land on the other side of the river and this is also bordered by State land.The river banks are steep on the property, but the fishing for small mouth bass is exceptional. There is a small turn around on the path just beyond Crooked Butt Bench where you can take out your canoe, kayak, or inner tubes after floating the 2+ miles from the Oakland bridge. Just be prepared to walk your water craft back up to the house or Glamping site as there is no motorized access to the river.If you like to lay on the rocks in the sun or take the kids for some wading in the river, the best place is the farthest to walk to. Take the trail to “High Bluff”, then cross the Snyder property line (Permission for trail access only – do not leave trail!), then descend down and cross the bridge across Herrington Manor Creek (a stocked trout stream!). The rich history of Burnhead Grazings is enveloped in a love for God's creation. Dr. Gib and Emmy Lou McLaughlin purchased Burnhead, which is Gaelic for the head of the stream, from William H. Stevens. The once pasture for Hilltop Dairy's cows became a pasture for sheep. Gib and Emmy had been in search of land for years after getting their first border collie and falling in love with the Shepherd lifestyle. Gib trained dozens of border collies to work the sheep and did hundreds of demonstrations highlighting the herding abilities of the collie across the country. Their love for Scotland and the border collie took them Scotland on many occasions. Burnhead Grazings is a snapshot of Scotland, "in bye" or close to, the beautiful college town of Indiana, PA. Less than two miles from two hotels, three miles from downtown, and within minutes from Amish country, it is amazing that this respite still exists so close to civilization. Gib and Emmy's daughter, Moire McLaughlin Bridges and her husband Randy have endeavored to bring the sheep back to Burnhead Grazings and to continue the family tradition as well as to share in the experience. You can listen to an interview on The Christian Witness Program on this page for some history about Moire and Randy in Tennessee where they were residing before coming to Indiana. They are producing lamb, wool for spinning and felting, and hay and are opening up the farm for small events such as weddings or family reunions. Moire is also the author and illustrator of a children's book available for sale on iBooks called Sissy & The King. In November of 2014, with the help of Hilltop Baptist Church and many others, they began hosting an event, LIFE Nativity, the weekend before Thanksgiving, which benefits Life-Way Pregnancy Center. Moire is also a fine artist and gives classes on wool felting. Ask about signing up for a class or book a private felting party.

Chuck is an AWESOME host! He made sure to tell us several things about the area that we might enjoy doing before we even got there! As we travel to the area often, we had already done a lot of the things he mentioned, and since we were primarily there to visit family, we didn't have time to check out any of the other things. However, they are now on our list of things to do! He was even so kind as to let us upgrade to the 50 amp site even though we had only booked the 30 amp. Both sites are awesome, but the 50 amp is a little larger, so it's better for spreading out a little more. It was raining a good chunk of the weekend, and we were very grateful for the nicely packed gravel at each site - we have stayed at other places and ended up dealing with mud... We don't always bring the camper when we come to the area, but when we do, you can bet I'll be checking to see if this site is available before looking anywhere else!

I had the pleasure of an extended stay at Jeff's camp so I am taking the opportunity to write another review! Jeff is super kind, flexible and an awesome Hipcamp host. If you get to talking to him, he will share some incredible history and prior photos of the campsite area. He's put a lot of time and dedication into making this an amazing and relaxing retreat for folks. I was fascinated to learn some historical details! The space is tranquil, private and has all of the basics anyone would need at camp. Not to mention there's plenty of room for a large group or for kids and/or pets to run and play (with staying cautious around the train tracks). For anyone passing through on the bike trail it is not far at all and would make a great overnight stop. There are very nearby provisions in town (Smithton) at a little market. For travelers there is an RV dump and hot showers (towels/washcloth provided) right up the road at Flying J truck stop. Walmart and groceries are about 10 minutes away in nearby Belle Vernon. Some nearby attractions include Smithton Beach for swimming, Bloom brewery in West Newton (with some great pizza shops, Fox Pizza being my favorite), Vinoski winery, Round Hill animal park in nearby Elizabeth (good for kids), and if you're up for the trip, Kennywood amusement park or the city of Pittsburgh.

2 nights at Private Riverside Retreat

We loved the privacy of this spot for camping with our 2 dogs. The trains ran often and we enjoyed watching them. This spot was easy to find, felt secluded enough, yet convenient to Confluence for last minute munchies, walking the bike trail with the dogs and driving 20 mins to OhioPyle for beautiful hiking. The porta potty was spotless and the picnic tables came in handy. It’s Early spring and the leaves weren’t on the trees yet, yet it still felt very private from the road behind us and the bike trail. The road by the trains ( across the river) was busier than what we expected, but with more leaves on the trees, I expect you wouldn’t notice the cars as much and it’s a worthwhile trade off to have this little gem of a camping spot to ourselves! We will definitely choose this spot again for camping whenever we’re staying in the area. Thank you so much for sharing your place with us!

Jim’s campsite was awesome. Just a short walk to a beautiful creek, and the whole site felt private and peaceful. Everything was clean and well kept, which made the stay even better. Our doxin loved running the paths that were cut through the property. My wife and I had a great time and will definitely be back!

Very excellent campsite we loved our stay clean, welcoming, and peaceful. We found a cute turtle with a missing limb the owner assured us that he is a strong turtle who has been around for a long time if you see the turtle say hi for us! The owner was nice enough to check on us after some wildlife was spotted nearby we really appreciated the concern. Overall a safe campsite that we would recommend every time.

About

Whether hiking through dense oak and maple forests, biking down mountainous woodland trails, or paddling around Laurel Hill Lake on a kayak or stand-up paddleboard—Laurel Hill State Park has plenty of ways to get outdoors. Head to the swimming beach when the sun’s shining, try your luck fishing for bass and trout, or wrap up warm for a winter snowmobiling excursion—a 120-mile trail network connects to the adjoining Forbes State Forest. More than half of the campsites at Laurel Hill Park Campground have electric or full hookups, or you can cozy up in a camping cottage or lodge.

Tips for snagging a campsite

You can reserve one of the park’s 264 campsites, along with the cottages and lodges, via the Pennsylvania State Parks website.
Campsite reservations open 11 months in advance, and all sites must be reserved a minimum of three days in advance.
Campsites can book up fast, especially if visiting during peak season (June to September) or on holiday weekends. Aim to book at least three months in advance; more for cottages and lodges.

When to go

Laurel Hill State Park is most atmospheric with its colorful coat of spring wildflowers or fall foliage, but outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do whatever date you pick for your camping vacation. Come from June through September if you want to swim, or from mid-December onwards to make the most of the snow. Laurel Hill Park Campground is open from mid-April through late October, while lodges or camping cottages can be booked year-round.

Know before you go

Laurel Hill State Park is about 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh or about a 1-hour drive away.
There are no admission fees for Pennsylvania state parks, but campsite booking fees apply.
Facilities in the park include a visitor center, restrooms, picnic areas, boat rentals (including paddleboards, canoes, and kayaks), boat ramps, and a dump station.
Fires are only permitted in grills and fire rings, and complete fire bans are possible during dry periods.
You can bring your own boats, and electric motors are permitted, although restrictions apply. Swimming is only permitted at the designated swimming beach.
ADA-accessible facilities at Laurel Hill include campsites, restrooms, and picnic areas, along with the swimming beach and kayak launch.
