Learn more about this land: This tucked away wooded campsite is 5 miles away from the Ohiopyle State Park whitewater launch area and GAP bike trail. We are 9 miles from Frank Lloyd Wright's Classic Fallingwater and about 8 miles from Kentuck Knob one of the last resident homes he designed (both are open for tours). Fort Necessity National Battlefield is 5 miles away. There are numerous native trout streams in the area. Youghiogheny Reservoir is 7 miles away for fishing, boat rentals, and water-sports. The wooded campsite is primitive and perfect for all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive van or truck camping, hammocks, and small tents. NOTE - tow behind units are not suitable and will not be able to be taken to the Fern One campsite. We are "nice pet" friendly. We have a mountain spring (when the spring is running). The ferns will normally be in full glory by the end of May to the beginning of October and are amazing, covering the forest floor. Deer, Wild Turkey, chipmunks, squirrels and many woodland birds abound. A picnic table, fire ring and firewood is available on the campsite. There is a compost toilet facility located in a nearby shed that is a clean space for taking care of business. Free WiFi on the property as long as the plant life is not too thick! There is a 1/2 mile hiking loop on the property and many challenging trails in the area, including the starting point for the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail.

The Fern House
Cozy Cabin w/ Thoughtful Touches
My boyfriend and I spent the weekend at Virgil's beautiful cabin. It was cold outside, but inside we were toasty. We loved the personal touches in the cabin. The wood inside was beautiful, the lamp shades and cute loft. There were many amenities available, including coffee, snacks (so many!), cold drinks, warm blankets, and even toiletries in the bathroom. Thank you Virgil + Pam for the cozy weekend! We appreciated it so much.

Cozy
Cabin was wonderful. Virgil and Pam had special touches that made the stay extra special; welcome basket, extra toiletries if needed, maps and books of the area and greeted us to make sure everything was good. Definitely will stay here again. So close to all the Ohiopyle attractions! Thank you Virgil and Pam.

Warm and welcoming
Must stay! We loved our time at The Fern House! Virgil and Pam are amazing hosts, they provided all the necessities and left clear directions. The house itself is beautiful, we definitely spent time admiring the architecture. Waterfall house, Ohiopyle Falls, and Fort Necessity were all nearby and great attractions.

Tranquil spot in the woods. The host was very accommodating and well prepared. He had a bundle of firewood at the site with additional bundles to purchase if needed. In the bathroom area, there were maps and brochures for local attractions, as well as supplies that were available for purchase if you forgot something (rope, bug repellent, etc). The host was very responsive to questions and any concerns.

We really enjoyed camping at Ferns in the forest. It is close to everything in the area but still private. They have a compost toilet which was well thought out and cute. Brochures are available for things to do in the area. There is wood there and more to buy if you need it. Virgil was also very nice and checked in to make sure we were good.

Loved our stay at Ferns in the Forest. Virgil is the perfect host. He really has thought of everything. I have no suggestions for improvements. Communication in person and via text was excellent. We appreciated feeling like we had the entire woods and ferns to ourselves. Absolutely beautiful. You can hear cars pass but it is very quiet at night and I love the convenience of having the car at the campsite. would stay again. 5 stars!

Virgil & Pam’s campsite was absolutely beautiful and they were extremely friendly and helpful hosts! Tucked in a large section of forest and surrounded by ferns, it had enough amenities ie. compost toilet, potable water, and wifi, to feel extremely comfortable while still secluded and private. A short drive to plenty of activities in Ohiopyle and historic landmarks like Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob. 10/10 would recommend!

Waving Ferns
Cannot gush more about this site! The area was raining hard on our way up and Virgil went out of his way to make sure to provide us with a tarp to put under the tent. Such a picturesque place with the amount of surrounding ferns. I nerded out over the bathroom shed that is sooo comfortable and the compost toilet (We love sustainability!) My boyfriend and I scheduled a tour of FallingWater, which is an easy 15min drive from the campsite. The town is very scenic! Would recommend the host to consider having cashapp/venmo/PayPal options for guests to tip for firewood, etc. to make sure he is compensated for his generosity! We had such a great time and already planning on reserving the site again in early summer!

Quick weekend stay
Virgil has a very nice spot setup in the woods for campers. You pass a cabin on your way in but it’s plenty far enough away from the site to still feel private. Virgils house is way up on the hill so again very hard to see or hear. There are currently no other tent sites on the property so it’s secluded with the exception of road noise which really wasn’t a bother. There is only really room for 2 tents to be setup on opposite sides of the fire. The jug of water, huge fire ring, load of firewood, sealed stumps around the fire and picnic were great additional touches on site. The bathroom was extremely clean and continent to have. Overall a great experience I would recommend and visit again.

Even though we had a rainy weekend, we loved our stay at Virgil's campsite. The site itself is gorgeous! There was a flat tent spot, a great fire pit with log seats, and I could have spent all day just staring out at the ferns. We opted for the tree tent and our little girls loved it! The composting toilet shed was a pleasant surprise with books, area pamphlets, and honor-system supplies. It was a great jumping-off spot for visiting the state park, the Laurel Caverns, and other activities. We definitely planning on visiting Virgil's place again! Highly recommended!

Great host and location
Virgil was super communicative and helpful. The campsite is magically beautiful and comfortable with all the ferns, moss, trees and mushrooms. My tent is too big for the site so I rented the dome tent for my party of two. What a treat to arrive to an already set up tent, with a mat at the entrance and blankets spread on the floor- so unexpected, cozy and appreciated. There were four seats around the fire ring that were varnished on the sitting surface. A generous supply of firewood under a tarp was there for us. The picnic table was in great condition. The comfort station is a short walk and super clean, dry, roomy with many useful and fun touches. This is obviously a ministry of caring for Virgil and family to host strangers with such welcoming thoughtfulness. I would definitely camp here again. The proximity to the Ohiopyle attractions is fantastic. We could hear cars pass by occasionally, but never heard any people. Enjoyed the sounds of birds and deer.

great site
Campsite is beautiful - Virgil and Pam are great hosts - everything about this campsite is top notch. Note you can see and hear the road from the site - but depending on your level of secluded expectations - i found this to not be of any issue - traffic is minimal ... I had a very pleasant stay ... I will go again

Fern in Woods
Virgil was the best host! We thoroughly enjoyed a weekend unplugged in his idyllic setting of ferns and forest. My husband and I woke up to a family of deer having breakfast in the woods. Space is well thought out, with special touches such as log seating by the fire. We used them as side tables and foot rests for the ultimate in relaxation. Vergil started us out with seasoned dry firewood, fresh eggs from his free range hens at a bargain of $2 a dozen, and very clean privy. Thank you to Virgil and his family for sharing their special property with us, we hope to return soon.

Wonderful Experience!
I highly recommend this campsite, it's in a beautiful location, the host's son who we met was super nice and the compost toilet was a big plus. We appreciated that they left a cooler of water out for us and the ferns made this camping experience especially memorable! Next time I find myself in the area, I will definitely be back at this campsite!

A magical little place!
We had a lovely time at Ferns in the Forest! The site was beautiful and clean, completely surrounded by trees and ferns. Virgil and Pam were kind, thoughtful, and accommodating but gave us complete privacy during our stay. They greeted us shortly after arriving and were happy to recommend fun things to do in the area. Their love of their land and attention to detail was apparent in the clean and charming “comfort station” complete with a compost toilet, reading library, maps, and even a little camp store basket that included frequently forgotten/needed items for sale. The ferns surrounding the site are absolutely breathtaking (though fragile- so watch dogs and kids carefully to keep them on trails). Highly highly recommend Ferns in the Forest if you are looking for a beautiful location to relax and unwind!

Highly recommend!
We had a fantastic time at Ferns in the Forest. Virgil and his wife were so accommodating to our needs. We had a great time exploring Ohiopyle, PA in our truck camper. You have to check out the Comfort Cottage. Our son loved going through the basket of camping gear that was for sale. He was so excited about his new safety whistle. :) They also had great maps of the area and even books to read during our stay. It was also so convenient to have access to firewood. ($4.00 a bundle) We'll definitely be back for our next Ohiopyle fix!
