Learn more about this land: This wooded area is 5 miles away from the Ohiopyle State Park whitewater launch area and GAP bike trail. We are 9 miles from Frank Lloyd Wright's Classic Fallingwater and about 8 miles from Kentuck Knob one of the last resident homes he designed (both are open for tours). Fort Necessity National Battlefield is 5 miles away. There are numerous native trout streams in the area. Youghiogheny Reservoir is 7 miles away for fishing, boat rentals, and water-sports. The Fern House is the primary camp cabin on the property in 2023. Although if someone would want to park a "self contained" camper or small RV on the property we would permit the unit to occupy the area in front of the driveway just pass the entrance gate. It is not within the ferns and is next to the road. There is an electrical outlet available at this small RV or van camper site. We are "nice pet" friendly. We have a mountain spring (when the spring is running) up the trail road (450 feet away). The ferns will normally be in full glory by the end of May to the beginning of October and are amazing, covering the forest floor. Deer, Wild Turkey, Fox, chipmunks, squirrels and many woodland birds abound especially owls. A picnic table, fire ring and firewood is available on the campsite. Free WiFi on the property as long as the plant life is not too thick! There is a mile hiking loop on the property and many challenging trails in the area, including the starting point for the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. This is a rustic tiny house (cabin with 480 square feet of space) only 5 miles from the Ohiopyle State Park whitewater river access and Greater Allegheny Passage (GAP) bike trail. Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater is 9 miles up the road, US Army Corps of Engineer's Youghiogheny Reservoir is 7 miles away for fishing, boat rentals, beach swimming, and water-sports. National Park Service's Fort Necessity and Braddock's Grave (Revolutionary War) is 5 miles away. Many excellent hiking trails can be found throughout the area. The Fern House has a ladder-access sleeping loft (not standing head room), the mattress is very comfortable for two people. All sheets and bedding are provided. There is a back deck with grill for cookouts and a fire pit off the deck. The tiny house (cabin) is hidden behind standing Eastern Hemlocks. It is a private cabin and has a TV with several streaming apps and internet (WiFi). There is an electric heater and portable air conditioner to keep the cabin comfortable, although mountain summer weather is much cooler than in surrounding cities and towns. The small bathroom has a composting toilet (instructions are provided), sink (hot and cold running water). and shower with a very small (5 gallon) hot water tank. Camp showers are recommended. The kitchen has a refrigerator, 2-burner hot plate and large microwave. Dishes, glasses (plus wine glasses) silverware, and pots and pans are provided. Sink water is furnished from a mountain spring, with an independent hot/cold bottled drinking water dispenser in the kitchen. See photos for more details.

The Fern House
Perfect getaway!
This is a beautiful cabin in a great location close to many areas to hike, visit historical sites, and restaurants but it's also tucked away enough to make you feel like you have all the privacy you could want. The owners of this cabin have thought of every detail. You really don't have to bring much. We definitely over packed! The decor is welcoming and cozy. Everything is very clean and tidy. A welcome basket, kitchen essentials, materials and maps of the area, linens and towels, outdoor grill, firewood and more.... These owners really care about the comfort of their guests! It is a cabin that we will definitely make repeat visits too.

Great spot to stay!
Everything was great! The place was clean, cozy, stocked with some essentials. All the directions left for us were easy to follow and clear. The property was the beautiful cherry on top. Loved our stay here!

The Fern House
We loved staying at the fern house! It was SO clean and dang near anything you need is there. The wifi is super strong, the towels are soft. The property is well kept and plenty of outdoor lighting. We will definitely be keeping this gem in mind in the future and referring friends. Thank you so much Virgil

The Fern House
“Ferns in the Forest” rates 10 out of 10. We checked into a sparkling clean residence with perfect amenities and treats, all managed by friendly, welcoming hosts. Everything we needed was on-site, including multiple local guides, maps & books, fire pit, gas grill, strong WIFI, electrical outlets and perfect lighting indoors and out, two romantic fireplaces, and a spacious loft with a Therapedic Queen bed. We were also delighted to find both a state-of-the-art home theater, and a glass enclosed walk-in shower with spa towels and toiletries, in what the owners humbly call their “Rustic Cabin in the Woods.” When you visit “Ferns in the Forest,” take your binoculars – you will see (as we did) a herd of deer waking up in the morning (they sleep just in the back), wild turkeys foraging and frolicking, and so many birds, squirrels and chipmunks, that you will KNOW you are nestled in a 32 acre wildlife refuge. Whether you hike on the trail on the property, or just enjoy the views from the many windows, you will remember Ferns in the Forest – and you will want to visit again! Relaxation & Adventure
We loved our long weekend stay at the Fern House! Perfect location for getting to the GAP trail and whitewater rafting in Ohiopyle, but it still feels secluded and is such a cozy cabin to come back to after a full day of exploring! Our pup enjoyed walks in the woods and Virgil and Pam were so kind and welcoming. We hope to come back next summer!
